Natalie Quintal yep love my fellow Aussie in this scene if you're wondering how he can nail the English accent so precisely it's because as a commonwealth country the English were our first settlers after them came the Irish and the Scots in fact when listing ancestry on our censuses these three are actually the top three most commonly listed I always put Irish on mine ! But also have some Ulster Scots way back in my O'Brien three and four times great grandmothers !

While a great scene and line, from a historical POV it was laughable. Officers in the British Army back then bought their commissions. Each rank had to be purchased and promotion was based solely on two considerations. When a vacancy in the regimental officer's mess opened it was filled on the basis of seniority and the ability to pay for the new rank. Thus if a captain retired, died or simply decided to sell his commission, the lieutenants would be given the opportunity to buy the rank starting with the most senior. If he didn't have the money the next most senior would be given the chance and so on. If no lieutenant in the regiment wanted or could afford the captaincy than the commission would be sold by an agent of the War Office. Legally the price of commissions was fixed but unofficially commissions in prestigious regiments often commanded an under the table "premium" paid quietly to the seller or agent handling the purchase. The Navy by contrast never sold its commissions. Naval officers had to earn every promotion and were generally expected to go to sea at an early age (12-14 years old was the norm) and learn their profession the hard way as midshipmen. They had to pass a rigorous board exam to receive the lieutenant's commission and every promotion beyond that was at the discretion of the senior flag officer on station up to the rank of Post Captain. The lucky few who attained that rank would thereafter be promoted on the basis of seniority. But flag rank did not guarantee a command which was solely at the discretion of the Lords of the Admiralty. The army did in fact sneer at the navy back then. But it was because the navy accepted sons of middle class families and even tradesmen as midshipmen whereas the army rarely allowed anyone not born a "gentleman" into its officers corps. For the army, the most important qualifier when considering an application to buy an entry level commission was "who is your father and what kind of family do you come from?" Second and third sons of aristocrats generally got to the head of the line. Rarely was anyone below the ranks of the landed gentry allowed to purchase a commission. In the navy sons of ordinary families, and in rare cases even ordinary sailors who demonstrated exceptional skill as seamen, could attain an officers commission and rise as far as their talent and luck would take them.

My fave thing about this scene is what a powerful force Leonard seemed at sea. He was holding all the cards and was in charge of everything - soldiers at his back, crew at his command... Now, in front of an even more powerful force, he seems so small and so weak. And ironically Lord John doesn't need to be flanked by soldiers at all time to be strong - he just IS. Love it. :D

It's also an issue of aristocratic rank that still holds sway today. Leonard would have h8ll to pay if he crossed a Lord. It can stilp hold true today.

@@mdeborah827 he's not really a Lord he's the younger son of a Duke in the series his older brother Lord Melton was heir so he held by courtesy the title Earl of Melton then succeeded to Duke of Pardloe when their father died. All younger sons of Dukes and Marquesses are styled Lord first name last name hence Lord John Grey. But John isn't using his aristocratic power he's using his governor power and requiring the legal route which the naval captain foolishly didn't have

Leonard is an over-ambitious child. Lord John was also an over-ambitious child during the Rising when he first met Jamie and foolishly tried to assassinate him, but he still had more courage, valor, and honor on that day than Leonard has on his best day. Lord John is no child in this scene. This is why Jamie knew he could trust Lord John to raise William when he could not do it himself.

He got a kiss from Jamie ... unfortunately just in the book! And he also got a tight hug another time, which made Claire pretty jealous ( she just saw the aroused look on Johns face ... this is how she found out, that John's gay and in love with her husband). *lol* The tv series is too reluctant to show gay love ... but not reluctant at all to show gay sexual violence? Hm.

@bicarbonat1
@bicarbonat1 4 жыл бұрын
@@shop-a-holic3194 It actually is. I don't think that your statement helped your argument at all. Jamie kissing John is no worse than Jamie having sex with William's mother (it's actually a lot milder) - in both cases, his love and attraction for Claire does not diminish or disappear. So if women are self-inserting, imagining themselves in Claire's place, there should be no problem - because Jamie has always been "into" her, and always will be. So it isn't about "a man" being "into" a woman - what those people want is for a man to never be willingly intimate with another man, even if he's already in love with the woman. So even the appearance of bisexuality is considered repellent - why? Because of "attraction to men" (which is no more a threat to true love than "attraction to women"). So yeah, I'd say there might be a fair bit of homophobia or biphobia under the surface.

I love this scene not only for how cunning and intelligent Lord Grey is in matters of civic law and justice, but also how well this dialogue emphasizes the power rivalry between the army and navy at the time. I have to SLIGHTLY disagree... David Berry played this scene to perfection, but Sam's reactions as Jamie was the cherry on top of this delicious and beautiful cake. There is a point where he appears to start to speak, but stops himself, and his reaction when LJG points out the authority line is DEAD ON. They add that extra touch, and I imagine it's actually quite difficult to do a scene where you only react to what is going on around you. HUGE kudos to David Berry, but Sam's contribution was amazing, too

I love Lord John Grey!!!! It make me wonder why? His love for Jamie or William. Jamie does owe Lord John I mean he is raising Jamie’s son. I can’t wait for Lord John & William in America next season.

I pity the Lietuanent Leonard. Sorry Captain Leonard. He was so confident that he will get a promotion by catching Jamie, but he ended up hitting the wall. How would he know Lord John Grey was the one who freed Jamie with his influence in British court. And more than that, how could he even remotely guess that John Grey was deeply and madly in love with Jamie!
