2023 Toyota Supra 6-Speed MANUAL Review: Technically Worse, Way More Fun

Toyota FINALLY added a 6-speed manual transmission to the #Supra for 2023. While it's easier to drive quickly with the ZF 8-speed automatic, the 2023 #ToyotaSupra six-speed manual is by far the more fun and emotionally-provocative option of the two. It uses the same 382 HP BMW B58 inline six engine as the automatic Supra, rear diff gearing changes to keep it about as snappy (3.15 to 3.46), and all 2023 Supras get some electronic tweaks to traction and stability control.

I've driven both a z4 and Supra. I can say it feels nothing like a z4. The handling is much sharper and there is a significant weight difference between the two which you feel. Power delivery is probably the only characteristic that feel the same.

Exactly. It's "a Z4" based on hard points, and the whole thing is built by Magna Steyr, but Toyota did the suspension and steering tuning as well as enough other tweaks to make it meet their own goals and not simply be a funny-looking Z4.

I thought I’d hate the auto in my '21' but after 2 years it’s still SO quick and entertaining! That be said, I want a manual 6 speed next to my auto LOL. It’s funny, no one says a word about, or gets angry that the C8 Corvette doesn’t offer an auto. Nor the Audi R8.

The ZF8 is a fantastic option on the Supra! Glad you're still loving it. I do get a lot of comments about the C8 Corvette being DCT-only butttt a manual doesn't fit with Corvette engineers' mission of the car being so performance-focused. So I get it, at least. And it's a good DCT.

A manual transmission is counter to the C8 engineers' development goals! And the C8 is honestly great with the DCT, a manual would make that car worse. By comparison, the ND Miata's automatic is pretty bad for that type of car, and the manual makes the car far, far better. Talking in absolutes is generally unhelpful so we try not to!

I will attest to long trips in the first gen. We drove from WV to Ks none stop sans bathroom breaks (family emergency) and while getting in an out can be a pain after several hours you will be comfortable till you get out 😂. It's such a fun car to drive we take it everywhere.

I have a 2023 A91 6MT. If you want straight line speed and street race your car, go automatic. If you like the driver engagement of changing gears and a true driver's car, get manual. Simple as that.

Indeed! And the best part is that both transmissions are really well suited to the car. Although street racing is never okay - competition belongs on a track :-)

@@OutMotorsports Absolutely. Honestly I would have a lot of fun with both transmissions in this car. Amazing platform. Just a downpipe and a tune and you're golden. I doubt I'd ever want to push 650-700 hp on this car.

I am in the process of buying a Supra, I test drove both the automatic and manual. And while the manual is defenetly more fun, you are leaving some comfort behind. Depends on what you are going to use it for mostly for fun, driving curvy roads with not a lot of traffic, defenetly the manual version. If you use it not just as your "fun" car, automatic is the better choice imo

The benefit of the Supra is that both transmission options are really good! As you say, just depends on your use and preferences.

I had a Chrysler Conquest that was a Mitsubishi. I have an Alfa Romeo that is half Mopar. I'm not sure I understand what all the fuss is about. I drove a Mk5 Supra and Nissan 400Z back to back. The Nissan just felt like an average Nissan. The Supra felt much better quality and performance. At this price range, I'll take the better car no matter if it's true JDM or not.

I'm gathering confused. It's an IMT why was the clutch being engaged when shifting? The IMT car I know you only need to engage the clutch when in 1st-2nd gears.

IMT is just automatic rev matching on downshifts.

I never drove a 6 speed manual. I only drove 5 speeds. So I can't drive it in fear of throwing it in reverse. I can't drive a automatic either because I slam on the brakes to shift. Been driving 5 speed manual my whole life.

I started with a Ford 5-spd (no centering spring), then auto, then ZF 4-spd, then Mazda 5-spd (with centering spring), now 6-spd. The hardest transition for me was going from a 4-spd to a 5-spd with a centering spring. The transition to a 6-spd was easy. I only hit the brake on the auto 3 times. lol. I frequently switch between my WRX (6-spd), Wife's Murano CVT, and our Honda Odyssey Auto without issues. You get used to it. When driving the Murano, I do reach for the shifter frequently, which drives my wife nuts. lol.

Nothing is wrong with German Supra ! It’s actually better! If it was Japanese it would of been like new z flop and big failure! New z doesn’t even have adaptive dampers! If Supra was full Japanese it would be 100k or so and no one would buy it 😂

One of the worst reviews. Didn't seem to know whether he liked the car or not... The automatic is a better car, but the manual is what is should have been from the beginning. Just a lot of mixed and contradicting statements. Just a weird review overall ...

The automatic is better on paper and by every measurable metric! The manual is thus "worse" to many spec sheet queens who only want to chase numbers. But for driving enjoyment, the manual can't be beat. I ended up buying this car's twin, as a manual, and had zero interest in an automatic, if that says anything: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYTKY3x-ib1_rrM
