2 stalks: one for the turn signal, one for gear selection. The touch screen doesn't always take the "swipe" which gets to be a hassle during parallel parking or 3 point turns. Lastly, why can't they get the damned horn under the airbag?

Stalk for the indicator is the main issue. Sure America might not have many roundabouts but where you do, the indicator on the wheel is the dumbest idea ever because when you have to indicate off the roundabout you have no idea where the stupid button is because the wheel is turned

Problem is more that Teslas implementation is bad and incorrect. Real yoke steering wheels are implemented in a way that you do not have to make full or even big steering turns. You should be able to keep both hands on it even on full turns.

Steering wheel snob here as well. Drove my friend's Model 3 with a yoke for a week and just could not get used to it and one time smacked me in the back of the hand when I went to take over as it was about to hit a curb. There is no situation, half a steering wheel is an advantage. On a round steering wheel, you have unlimited possibilities wherever you hold your hand. Lexus has come up with a similar one, but it has variable gear ratio, which is likely to work better. The Joke steering wheel also has lousy quality, the car I drove had not gone far, yet the paint had started to come off on it. Absolutely the most ridiculous and pointless the steering wheel in history. And the fact that it wasn't even possible to choose from the beginning is genuinely stupid.the steering wheel in history. Yokes are for aircraft or any transportation method that requires steering with a limited range of motion. Fine as long as the driver does not cross arms at end of rotational travel. Wheels are for mechanical advantage requirements where multiple orbits may be needed to produce required effort in the steering gear. Like a farm tractor.

Good for you! Those kits are now sold out. Obviously many drivers prefer a wheel. Congrats on the wheel buddy! Though I didn't hate the Yoke either, I think it does take away a little from the driving experience. There is just something inherently satisfying about working a round steering wheel. Can't wait to test the Model S with a round wheel now. I think you're initial impression about the seating height is correct. I am 5'10 and in most cars I can set the seat quite low and still have an inch of two left before I hit the bottom - like in my Porsche Taycan. But in the Model S I set the seat all the way down and still feel I am sitting a little high. So you at 6'1 I imagine are seating quite high.

The rumbling noise in the morning is most likely just your tires. Drag Radials and Summer tires don't have silica and they get hard flat spots when parked for a while. Colder it is the worse it is. Driving them for a few miles will round them back out. Also, it doesn't help that the Model S is a bit heavy.

I got my Plaid in March of Last year and lived with the Yoke for about 4 months. In July of so, I installed a Hansshow Napa leather round wheel. Every steering wheel should be made of real leather. It felt amazing in my hands. Because it was round and heavy, I was able to drive much more smoothly through parking lots and in tight turns. Then when I was alone on the road and could drive in a spirited way, I finally felt like I was driving a real performance car. I honestly can't say anything positive about that yoke accept that it didn't suck as bat as I thought it would, and it did make the care feel special and futuristic. The horn button really sucks. I have a dent in my front bumper that most likely would have been there if I could have blew the horn fast enough before some bozo backed into me in a drive-thru. It took 3 or 4 months, but now I actually prefer the turn signal buttons over the stalk. I have a new Plaid on order, and I hope the wheel will feel good. I really don't want to risk messing it up by having it recovered in leather.

I do agree I don't think the yoke is much a safety hazard, I do think that there not being stalks for turning signals is though. I think it just encourages people to use them less as now it takes more effort to find and hit them where with stalks you hit is with a single flick. Personally just don't like the yoke though as on longer drives I like to move my hands around to keep my wrists and arms from getting stiff. Plus in city driving I tend to put my right hand on top of the wheel (around 2:00) just before turns to stagger them. That's not really possible with it. I know it's technically a less safe technique, but I find it more comfortable.

Capacitive touch buttons present another problem: you can't operate them with gloves on. So much for driving in cold climates. Tesla should have brought back the stalks with the new steering wheel. The yoke was an ill-advised decision from the start, done mostly in the interest of reducing cost. The yoke looks cool as hell, but is poorly adapted to real-world driving, especially without variable ratio steering.

I really like the yoke as it’s great for autopilot resting your hand on the bottom of it. It also makes the car feel more futuristic to me maybe because I grew up watching knight rider. It’s not more ergonomic, but I do like it. I also don’t miss the stalks as I like everything at a simple thumb press distance similar to what you see on Ferrari, minus actual buttons. However the horn needs to be in the middle. Your point about the driving position with the wheel, though definitely seems like a valid one. I never really felt in control of the car with the yoke if that makes sense.

I tried a Plaid with the joke dial. It was the worst shit I've ever tried. Futuristic? It looks and feels super ridiculous. If Tesla had done what Ferrari do, a button on each side, that would probably be a good system. The way they have implemented it on the Model S and X wheel however is not a good implementation. Even though you get used to it, it's not intuitive at all, and you will get confused when ever the wheel/yoke is upside down or something like that. And on the Ferraris it's at you fingertip, you can feel the button, and you don't have to move anything, you just push in with the finger that's already there. In my humble opinion, they ruined the car with that non-sense. Stalks is much easier to use. You never have to think, and that's what a driver need and want. I get the futuristic look and all, but it's like Kyle say, it doesn't add anything, it just takes away from how functional it is. Being able to get a Model S Plaid with steering wheel and stalks might be enough to make a Model S interesting again.

About the airbag, I think why they left it to you, but in the center of the new wheel :) If you look at your video at 15:24 you can see there is no airbag in the new one that is still wrapped... Probably similar to the aftermarket steering wheel for Model 3 and Y where you transfer the airbag from the old one to the new one.

The wheel comes without the airbag installed, otherwise the tech would have to remove it again, on site, to install the wheel. Much easier, safer and faster to not pre-install it.

I’d love to install your yoke on my model s and remove my round wheel. Be cool to install the yoke from Out of Spec. Please advise

I love my wheel retrofit. The yoke will never be my input of choice.

Did you get to keep the yoke though? That would be the only way I'd do this, if I could keep it and swap it out later. Doesn't seem like its difficult to do.

I love how the yoke looks but had to switch as my daughters also use the car.

How do you reprogram the steering wheel using the service mode? Is it available still in 2024?

Will the new steering wheel come with a horn in the center like a regular car does? Or it is still the same press a small button at the worst position possible thing?

Wait so did I hear him right that you can retrofit a model 3 steering wheel and turn signal / parking stalks?

Tell us more about restoring the stalks, please. When the wheel was not an option on the Model S, that was the deal breaker. I'd rather have the stalks, as the turn signal buttons are illogical. And not having the horn in the center of the wheel is still a deal breaker. I am not sure if the S3XY buttons will actuate the horn, If so, that would be an acceptable workaround, even with a slight safety issue if the airbag actuates. And what is the stutter on the horn? You can no longer give a good long satisfying UP YOURS horn honk? Last, wave hello at the folks at Poudre River Hospital. That's where I got my first stent after my Life Flight ride in the snow from Laramie. Great place to be when it's not snowing!
