I would like to see a “Boat Launch” test. Ease of use, handling, stopping (since most boat trailers use surge brakes) and even X factors like how good is the design to help you self launch a boat. Use a couple of different boats… a jet ski vs a large bow rider with a multiple axel trailer. I love the Rivian, but one pedal driving is NOT a good thing when backing down a boat ramp in my opinion.
@Michael37924
@Michael37924 10 ай бұрын
Factors for the test: Visibility when pulling (mirrors and cameras) Ease of backing down the ramp - single jet skis are a challenge in any pickup Ease of controlling a large boat / trailer down the ramp Slippage when recovering a boat… that first move up the ramp when the boat is first floated on Handling with big trailer/boat (same course, obstacles across all test trucks, same trailer/boat combo)

Dunno about in the Rivian but in my Ioniq 6 the one-pedal (iPedal) can be turned off - it does not even stay in operation after you switch off, but will default to Level 3 regen. I can set regen to zero if I wish.
@Michael37924
@Michael37924 10 ай бұрын
@@petesig93 the closest you can get (in a Rivian) to disabling regen is the Snow drive mode. In general, I like one pedal driving. But, there are just a few exceptions where the “old way” might be safer. Backing a 7000 pound boat trailer down a boat ramp into salt water in a 7000 pound electric truck, tapping the accelerator to make it go feels all wrong. Your foot should be firmly planted on the brake (in this one case). In Rivian’s defense, this could be in a future software update one day… Boat Launch mode… only works in reverse at low speeds, initiated by pressing the brake and activating the mode in reverse, simulates an “idle” speed in reverse so you can ease up off the brake to make it go. No need to shift your foot from brake to accelerator back and forth.

And a mid weight trailer, not the max, but a recreational trailer in the mid-3000 weight. I pull a pop-up with my Ioniq 5. I take a 50% hit in range, but that's starting with a relatively efficient car without a trailer.

@@michaelsmithers4900 I have a 2023 F-150 Lighting Lariat, extended range. I had 700 lbs in the truck bed, and a 5 x 10 enclosed "V" shaped trailer (1,200 lbs empty) towed behind it, but I was carrying about 1,500 lbs of lumber and building material inside. I lost 44% of range, which included driving an average of 110 km/h, a/c on, with about 600 lbs (2 people, 2 large dogs) inside the cab. I was driving from Calgary, Alberta Canada to Revelstoke BC, in a very mountainous region. Planned out my trip, and it worked very well. Lots of power to pass, comfortable and the cabin is very quiet, even with the road noise. On another note, I had driven the truck between Calgary AB and Edmonton AB in -39C (-38.2F) and -60C (-76F) with the windchill. While the battery lost 53% efficiency do to the cold, and my range dropped over 60%, it worked fine charging at a mid-way-point.

@@brianpletcher8055 have you considered driving slower to increase range and decrease charging time?
@michaelsmithers4900
@michaelsmithers4900 7 ай бұрын
Often range is thought to be static but it’s actually extremely variable due to multiple factors. One considerable factor is wind resistance at high speeds. To that end people should understand that if they are concerned about range (being less than distance to destination) they can easily extend their range by slowing down. That goes double for towing a bulky trailer.

I want to see a towing challenge. One set at 70 MPH, one at 55 MPH; with both an “aerodynamic mid-weight” trailer (a Safari Alto Condo for example) and a “heaviest weight all allow, boxy not aerodynamic” trailer. (A flat-front box at 10,000 lbs.) A “towing 10%” test would be a nice addition, too. Maybe 30 minutes charging, or just “charge until the rate drops below 1C”?
@larryspiller15
@larryspiller15 10 ай бұрын
Agreed on slower speed and mid weight trailer. The obsession that many have with max towing at 75mph is ridiculous. They're evs, we know they'll do bad at that. Why not test them with reasonable loads 4-7k lbs at 55-65mph so a customer can see how it performs when you are actually trying to live with it while accepting the occasional towing performance compromise.

Can't wait for the off road tests. I own two Lightnings and we use them for work at remote cell tower sites here in CA. They are very capable for what we do. They see lots of off road use in and around the CA desert out here. The Silverado EV looks great with it's larger battery but I'd like to see more off road tests to see how the weight of the Silverado affects off road capability. Might be more prone to flat tires over the sharp rocks we have out here. Great videos can't wait!

The Home Integration System aside (they’re kinda rare, and I didn’t want to spend $4k on one excluding installation/upgrades), a simple procedure: (1) if you have a manual transfer switch, flip it, (2) take your 240A/30A generator cable and plug it into the house and the bed outlet, (3) turn on the bed outlet power. And that’s it. Other than the vague frustration of certain car systems needing to be more “on” than you’d want in a camping/generator mode, it’s literally 3 super simple steps, and easier than a gas powered portable generator.

As millions of people have done in the last 100 years with a short bed, for anyone who has actually done any carpentry, remodeling, or fence and deck building, the tailgate is kept in the raised position most of the time and the 2x4x8s or 4x4x8s or longer are loaded up and rested on the top of the tailgate. Then strap them in and off you go. Or, the same can be done with plywood and sheetrock with the tailgate up or down. Carry some tie-downs and secure the load. The tailgate doesn't need to be up to carry large loads. Most people aren't driving cross country all day long with loads of building material in a light duty pickup bed. Large quantities of wood to build a house are delivered by large heavy rigs towing a flatbed trailer and the material is offloaded with a forklift. People with an ultra heavy gooseneck trailer usually purchase heavy duty diesel or gas trucks costing $80,000 to $120,000 brand new. They don't use light pickups for that, most of the time.

@@dvader3263 No carpenter I know drives a 6 foot bed..What you are suggesting is stupid. They don't put up the gate and lay the wood on top of it.. You can't haul 40 2x4s or studs that way. . If you do that with sheetrock, you'll break it... I'll bet you work at some tech company in CA don't you, because you have no idea what you are talking about.. I drive a Ram 3500 and pull a 16 foot gooseneck trailer, with a ball in the bed that I installed. . You soyboys are the ones saying that these are work trucks.. Well are they or aren't they? These are not work trucks.. these are rich nerd trucks

@@larryspiller15 But the problem in these is the length. If they want workmen to adopt any EV truck, they need to make a standard bed with standard sides so that a truck box, a rack or a diesel tank can be installed. That's what workmen need.

@@dvader3263 I don't know a carpenter with a 6 foot bed. You have no idea what you are talking about. I drive a 2012 Ram 3500 and pull a a 16 foot gooseneck. I live in cattle country. Most trucks around here have the bed pulled off and and a haybed in it's place . How are you going to do that with these? These EVs are not work trucks. You city boys want to drive them fine, but they aren't for workmen

Awesome video Out Od Spec. I would be so interested in seeing these trucks maximum payload in their beds. Somtimes it just makes more sense to use the pickup truck bed over a trailer. Can't wait to your test videos and happy trucking!

Another cool test to try out between the trucks , is the area of automation features . Like automatic parking mode , like automatic adaptive cruise control . Plus how each truck handles pedestrian safety , what automatic features are built into each truck , etc.

You should either use a different Rivian or remove your bed rack for any tests that it might affect (e.g. range, handling, acceleration,...).

Can't wait! Payload total capability in terms of weight and volume would be useful for real world usability. Remember foldable rear seats and upper usable space in the Vault, & under-bed space for the Cybertruck, when tonneau covers are closed.

An issue that I have had with my model Y is icy roads or deep snow. It seems that the open differentials allow one wheel to slip which triggers the brake caliper and causes it to lock up then it just drags along until i let off the accelerator. With these trucks I understand that most, if not all, have some sort of limited slip diff or multiple motors on a single axle so I would love to see how well they handle those conditions. Unfortunatley the weather might not pan out during this limited time.

I, for one, am a guy with a light use-case. I've been getting by with an SUV for years. The things I need to know are how much construction tools you can fit in the frunk, how well it carries 8ft lumber and 4x8 sheet stock, how far it goes with a non-commercial trailer holding half a ton, and how efficiently it does those things in terms of power usage, in roughly that order.

Not related, but it’s time for another beak update. Did the service on the coolant valve help the charging curve? In regards to the trucks, can you throw in the cost of charging? This can vary depending on cost per kWh, but gives a good roundabout number.

Thanks Kyle. A one off request. I Astro-camp and I am a Lightning owner. My one big qualm is the inability to have the lights off while running the truck and opening and closing doors. I want to have a warm truck on cold nights and want to be able to get into and out of the truck with no exterior or interior lights coming on. I can dim the displays with red material. Thanks for considering my request to quickly explore this feature regularly in your reviews. Akin to dog mode feature. Keep up the great work.

I would also like to see using the truck as a generator for use in the field to run tools and as a generator for your home, not necessarily with the added "Home Kit" but as a simple generator replacement. Having such huge batteries available in case of emergencies or field use is a definite selling point for these vehicles

I would like to see an ergonomics test. So many people get in their trucks with water bottles, backpacks, and phones. Which is the best with storage space for those items, ease of opening the doors (like door handles) when your hands are full, getting it turned on and into gear, and setting out, along with parking it in tight parking spaces like are common on the coastal regions.

I want to see a comparison of the bi-directional charging capabilities, or lack thereof, of each truck. How long will they run an average house during a blackout? Or how well do they supplement power to a house at night when solar doesn't work.

Been waiting for this type of comparison. I appreciate each of what these trucks are. They tell an awesome story of what is possible with new/different tech (Cyber Truck) to what takes to go far (Silverado) hot rod truck Rivian, and the familiar truck (Ford)All these vehicles tell an interesting story for the EV truck market as whole. I get excited!!! So what I would like to see is what you are already have planned also I would like to have thoughts shared on what it would take to be competitive in the future bases on what is available today.
