when i see these vehicles all i can picture are 3 trucks with 3 holes in their gas tanks leaking gas all over the ground. You are literally pissing money away them sitting overnight after you spent money filling em. The fact these vehicles dont keep all the energy you spent money on to fill them up to begin with is assinine. EV is a total scam!

This was really insightful. While I still love the Cybertruck for its innovative design, manufacturing and tech, it’s surprisingly not ahead on either range, storage, charging, toeing power or practicality. That’s a bit of a bummer, especially given that it came out a few years after the others…

The 48 volt architecture, steer by wire and 4 wheel steering seem like cool innovations. The stainless steel exoskeleton and general weirdness seems unnecessary to me. I don’t quite see where a $80,000 - $120,000 vehicle fit’s into the company mission. I agree it doesn’t beat the competition on the most practical features.

Got my lightning a month ago. LOVE it. Traded in my bolt and frontier to consolidate. Gimmie a full-size, body on frame, parking pawl havin truck with a spare tire and more accessories than you can shake a stick at, any day over the other two. My Lightning and Rivian orders came within a month of each other (Rivian first). My previous truck was a Lariat F-150, which I loved. If I was looking for a work vehicle or had to seat 5 people comfortably, I’d have gone with the Lightning. But I’m mostly an off-roader with 4 seats needed, and the R1T was the direct design for that. It’s like a larger version of the offroad lifted Tacoma I had, but much better daily driver. Both of these EV vehicles are great. Some of the differences are a bit more nuanced than folks tend to describe. I am finding the Rivian hauls anything I need (plywood, mulch, etc.) and the Lightning seemed like a better offroad vehicle than my Lariat was. If I was a construction contractor I’d go with the Lightning. Since I’m a hydrologist working a lot in wilderness, I went with the Rivian. But either can work for both of those types of owners. No comment on the Cybertruck. My wife vetoed it based on aesthetics. Regarding charging networks, yes Tesla is the best. But I haven’t had any major issues road-tripping the Rivian - been across 6 southern states with it so far and just ran a 1500 mile circuit through FL in 4 days for a series of business trips away from home without any problems. So, I think that’s also a nuanced difference. Just get the vehicle that feels best for you. For me, it’s the R1T.

We just hit a year with our Lightning. Almost hit it with it in the shop due to a 33 day battery, lightbar, and steering wheel upgrade/recall repair(we had no apparent range, battery, or lightbar issues). Hopefully, this will be it for awhile. Form factor for us, it's the best. We'll be working on an overland upgrade to it, and an overland trailer with about 3kW of panels, and 20kW of batteries, so with good sun, we'll be able to put probably 40 miles per day into it.

It's the most "old school" of the three, but it has an actual spare tire and a place for it, bed caps/ toppers are available, and it has the great frunk. So of the three, it does far more of what a truck is really for, IMHO. (Wish it had a full 6 foot bed.) Once it can easily charge with NACS on the Tesla network, it surprises me to say, first choice of the three.

There were many details that were very interesting, and seemed honest. I also think that it was fine and honest to say that he likes the Rivian best as his all round car, even though he had some criticisms to make of it. But it was like there was a block or a wall, preventing him from allowing himself to like the cyber truck more than his Rivian. a few times he sounded like he was making a criticism of the cyber drop but then said oh no this is actually the same or better. He also praised the cyber truck and it seemed like he really liked the interior and the space in the cyber truck. There seemed to be an excitement in his voice when he was talking about individual things about the cyber truck, but it was like even though he kept on saying the cyber truck is better in this way, I’m better in that way it has more space and has more room and more people etc. etc. he always seemed to hit that wall. Also a lot of criticisms that he had that were quite valid are going to be fixed or improved with software updates like the 350 max charging rate, and, the self driving software. He said he liked the cyber truck better for highway driving although it was a bit noisy which could be understandable as a downside. The cyber truck also has options to get bigger batteries which would put it above the others. Now I agree that there is an appeal to the Rivian looks that the cyber truck doesn’t have and that the looks are so different it’s hard to compare them. The Rivian has a soft more sophisticated exterior and the interior is more traditional, more in the style of luxury cars today. The cyber truck is very minimalist and clean and futuristic, which is hard to compare to, but looks great with the visibility in the sunroof. So overall, I think he was trying to be very honest, and while in someways, I wanted to criticize him the biggest criticism is it seems like he wasn’t open to let himself like the cyber truck more even though he kept on saying over and over in almost every metric that the cyber truck had more room and had an amazing tunnel cover and the drivetrain and the powertrain were better and the 220 V battery and the faster charging for the first part of the charge cycle, he just went into so many different areas and he would start to say the other truck was better, but then said oh no cyber truck better so it just seems like he hit a wall. Now he owns a Rivian so you don’t feel bad about an expensive purchase that you made for yourself and I don’t think he has a reason to feel bad about it because it’s a preference thing and from the outside of the Rivian looks pretty cool. but the cyber truck and Rivian are so different. You could own both of them and like them for different reasons. I think one of the main considerations will be how these vehicles age. Will the cyber truck get better with age and updates and will the parts of each of these trucks last? How long will these trucks have to spend in repairs and going back to the dealership for recalls, etc. but overall I appreciate this video

Also of note, Lightnings are now coming with a 14-50 adapter for the 14-30R plug, but you have to either use something with a max 30A draw, or back down the draw on the device to 30a. A very insightful episode for me. As usual, Kyle did a great job breaking down his thoughts on the three trucks but to me he highlighted something else. The reason why truck design has basically been the same for decades is because it is a good design. The Ford Lightning is probably the best version of what a truck can be. Tesla’s Cybertruck is awesome but its design is a bit of a compromise. Not a lot of compromise and it does fulfil the need to look radically different from other trucks but for a truck it could have more headspace in the back, better view behind and a bigger frunk. The Cybertruck probably needs more advanced batteries, should be in the works, to pull ahead in terms of range and of course there is the FSD future that will certainly make it highly desirable.

I am interested to see what the electric pickup options/specs will be in 5 - 10 years. The batteries should be way better by then and hopefully chargers will be much faster as well. I feel like I'd want around 600mi real-world range in a pickup, which should be totally doable in 10 years without increasing the battery weight at all. Right now the CT seems the most practical to me. It's a paradigm shift to have a pickup that has the maneuverability and acceleration of a sports car, yet with 16"+ of clearance, and you can bash it all day with a sledgehammer and do no damage. Spacious cab and bed to boot. I'm imagining being able to hide a winch in the frunk with a cutout in the hood for the rollers, and gear boxes on either side of the winch for your towing/winching gear. Your winch and cables would all be kept nice and dry in there, and it wouldn't change the aerodynamics or approach angle.

Great review. I've driven both the R1T and the Lightning but not the Cybertruck. I agree wholeheartedly that the Lighting is a traditional truck, and a very nice one might I add. The one I drove had incredible power. The display's speedometer numbers went from 0-60 in no time. That Lighting is a truck I would've bought if I could've gotten its price closer to $50K for the extended range battery pack. The Rivian was a nice truck. Very luxurious feeling (gave me a Land Rover vibe) and very powerful as well. However, the Rivian left me feeling "I'm not ready for the future". I wanted to unlock its doors but there's no power lock switch, so I had to roll down its window for someone to reach in and pull the inside handle to open a back door. You have to go to a menu to move its power tilt steering wheel. You have to go into a menu to adjust the dash vents from blowing in your face. The brakes auto-apply as soon as you let off the accelerator and there's no way to disable that. Those are things I never see in any Rivian reviews, but I wonder if people just get used to these (what I would call) shortcomings and don't mind them. Mind you, I've only had 10+ year old vehicles until I bought my Bronco so I'm used to traditional controls in vehicles and just have to get used to future stuff. I did appreciate this comparison review, thank you.

When you say the brakes auto apply do you mean the regen? Is so, that's literally one of the best parts of driving an EV. ONCE you get used to it, it's annoying to drive an ICE again. How often do you adjust the steering wheel? I've set mine once and never touched it again. Can save in profiles for the wifey.

Here's some food for thought. Ford brought the Lightning to market nearly two years ago. Despite all the advances since then, it is still a very serviceable vehicle. The ground-up-design Lighting with better range, better towing capability and better upgradeability is set to begin production in late 2025. What do you think Ford will do with the experience and technical advancements between now and then?

Great videos and great team work all this week. I’ll say it depends on when you buy the truck and if it’s going to be your only vehicle. One thing not talked about, is the Tesla supercharger network, which at the moment is the best and most reliable charging network out there. I would be confident driving cross country with a Tesla and finding properly functioning chargers. Compared to have to rely on chargers, that many EV owners find, the chargers are not working.
@danandfaith
@danandfaith 8 ай бұрын
Yes, an issue and a consideration. We have a Model Y in addition to the Lightning. In 2023, I think we used the Superchargers 6 times in the entire calendar year, with two trips being 4 hour trips to address family emergency matters. But given Ford and Tesla have said we will have access to the Superchargers in February of this year, we’re not all that concerned. Our use case doesn’t normally require much DC charging anyway, but having an adapter to use the Superchargers will further eliminate concerns.

I got the invite to order my Cybertruck but I think my Rivian R1T fits my needs better. Here’s why: I love the new design of the CT but feel like the R1T is more functional. Things my R1T has that CT doesn’t: 1. Gear tunnel - I can’t believe how much use out of this I get (not just the storage but standing on door to reach racks/sitting on door to put wetsuit etc. 2. Bed camera - I have become reliant on this when towing/stuff in the bed 3. Screen behind steering wheel. I can do things like look at bed camera on big screen and look at nav on driver screen. 4. Generally nicer interior. I’ve sat in both and although Tesla is clean it’s nowhere near as lux as rivian.

Initially, the high lip of the frunk on the Rivian seems poorly thought out. But then you realize that it's deep and wide, and can take a full week of family groceries without anything rolling out onto the floor. The Lightening is a good work truck, and the moon buggy Cybertruck makes a visual statement of road presence. But the Rivian cossets its occupants in premium opulence, and it's that interior, ride quality, features, and (on/off-road) performance that wins people. 13:00 mins in says it all, thanks Kyle!

Thanks this is a good overview of the three trucks. It’s important to also consider dealerships when deciding between these. If you go with the F150 (or any EV from a traditional auto maker) you will be stuck with the antiquated dealership and maintenance model of combustion vehicles. Tesla and Rivian have invested a lot of effort into rethinking maintenance with diagnostics driven service and mobile service where they come to your house for easier repairs. The downside is that for major issues you might have to travel further for service since Tesla and Rivian don’t have as many service centers as Ford. If you live further than an hour away from a Rivian or Tesla service center the Lightening is the smartest choice.

We bought an F150 Lightning Lariat ER. We’d had a chance to drive a friend’s R1T, and liked it, but Rivian suffers from the same issue as we already face with our Tesla Model Y: no service availability. The nearest Rivian service is in a Boston suburb. That’s 3+ hours away. The nearest Tesla service stations are in Boston suburbs and an Albany, NY suburb. All 3 hours away. Our Ford dealer is 16 minutes from the house, and they’ll come pick up the truck, provide service, and return it. That was a selling point in going to look at the Lightning. What we’ve discovered since buying it is we LOVE driving it. BlueCruise is more comfortable to drive than Tesla’s FSD. It does less, but what it does, it does SO well. We road tripped it this past week to a family property a few hours away, charged it there, and drove back home. We had the bed filled with tools, chainsaw (just in case) and supplies needed at the cabin. Oh, and a powered cooler in the bed, plugged in to ProPower for the trip down and back. The Frunk held a 7 gallon fresh water carrier (water systems are shut down in the cabin for the winter), plus clothing and bedding. Back seats folded up, with our musical instruments and some food stuff in the spacious area there. Our truck arrived with an adapter that goes into the twist-lock 240v outlet and adapts to L14-50R. BTW, that twist lock 240v is what is on portable generators that handle 240v, so it actually does make sense if you’re connecting to a temporary generator port on a house, as that’s the cable style used, not L14-50. The Lightning is incredibly quiet on the road. Our Model Y is loud with road noise. Comfort-wise, the Lightning is far beyond our Model Y. And yes, having a truck that’s a truck is great where we live, dealing with dirt roads and driving on the hay fields and such. We live in an area where full size pickups are common, and where people turn their noses up at EVs. Lots of folks don’t even realize our truck is electric except that it’s so quiet. The Model Y is going to get sold in the near future.
