This was really insightful. While I still love the Cybertruck for its innovative design, manufacturing and tech, it’s surprisingly not ahead on either range, storage, charging, toeing power or practicality. That’s a bit of a bummer, especially given that it came out a few years after the others…

There were many details that were very interesting, and seemed honest. I also think that it was fine and honest to say that he likes the Rivian best as his all round car, even though he had some criticisms to make of it. But it was like there was a block or a wall, preventing him from allowing himself to like the cyber truck more than his Rivian. a few times he sounded like he was making a criticism of the cyber drop but then said oh no this is actually the same or better. He also praised the cyber truck and it seemed like he really liked the interior and the space in the cyber truck. There seemed to be an excitement in his voice when he was talking about individual things about the cyber truck, but it was like even though he kept on saying the cyber truck is better in this way, I’m better in that way it has more space and has more room and more people etc. etc. he always seemed to hit that wall. Also a lot of criticisms that he had that were quite valid are going to be fixed or improved with software updates like the 350 max charging rate, and, the self driving software. He said he liked the cyber truck better for highway driving although it was a bit noisy which could be understandable as a downside. The cyber truck also has options to get bigger batteries which would put it above the others. Now I agree that there is an appeal to the Rivian looks that the cyber truck doesn’t have and that the looks are so different it’s hard to compare them. The Rivian has a soft more sophisticated exterior and the interior is more traditional, more in the style of luxury cars today. The cyber truck is very minimalist and clean and futuristic, which is hard to compare to, but looks great with the visibility in the sunroof. So overall, I think he was trying to be very honest, and while in someways, I wanted to criticize him the biggest criticism is it seems like he wasn’t open to let himself like the cyber truck more even though he kept on saying over and over in almost every metric that the cyber truck had more room and had an amazing tunnel cover and the drivetrain and the powertrain were better and the 220 V battery and the faster charging for the first part of the charge cycle, he just went into so many different areas and he would start to say the other truck was better, but then said oh no cyber truck better so it just seems like he hit a wall. Now he owns a Rivian so you don’t feel bad about an expensive purchase that you made for yourself and I don’t think he has a reason to feel bad about it because it’s a preference thing and from the outside of the Rivian looks pretty cool. but the cyber truck and Rivian are so different. You could own both of them and like them for different reasons. I think one of the main considerations will be how these vehicles age. Will the cyber truck get better with age and updates and will the parts of each of these trucks last? How long will these trucks have to spend in repairs and going back to the dealership for recalls, etc. but overall I appreciate this video
@stupidas94668 ай бұрын

You worked with what you had but would have liked to have seen the lightning in all of the videos. Great description of the features, use cases and what would make someone choose each one. I am interested to see what the electric pickup options/specs will be in 5 - 10 years. The batteries should be way better by then and hopefully chargers will be much faster as well. I feel like I'd want around 600mi real-world range in a pickup, which should be totally doable in 10 years without increasing the battery weight at all. Right now the CT seems the most practical to me. It's a paradigm shift to have a pickup that has the maneuverability and acceleration of a sports car, yet with 16"+ of clearance, and you can bash it all day with a sledgehammer and do no damage. Spacious cab and bed to boot. I'm imagining being able to hide a winch in the frunk with a cutout in the hood for the rollers, and gear boxes on either side of the winch for your towing/winching gear. Your winch and cables would all be kept nice and dry in there, and it wouldn't change the aerodynamics or approach angle.

The best part about the Lightning is the software is secondary to the truck, meaning, you don’t need the software to drive it. There are no fart sounds or gimmicks. Just a Truck with a Battery.
@Shiftheads8 ай бұрын
That's actually a disadvantage to legacy auto. You have one company making powertrain then another on infotainment and another on hvac etc. So many modules made from different manufacturers makes it way less seamless and reliable than building hardware and software together.

@@Shiftheads so far so good with the Lightning. People confuse software, true software that runs all those modules to the gimmicks in the entertainment system. We bought an F150 Lightning Lariat ER. We’d had a chance to drive a friend’s R1T, and liked it, but Rivian suffers from the same issue as we already face with our Tesla Model Y: no service availability. The nearest Rivian service is in a Boston suburb. That’s 3+ hours away. The nearest Tesla service stations are in Boston suburbs and an Albany, NY suburb. All 3 hours away. Our Ford dealer is 16 minutes from the house, and they’ll come pick up the truck, provide service, and return it. That was a selling point in going to look at the Lightning. What we’ve discovered since buying it is we LOVE driving it. BlueCruise is more comfortable to drive than Tesla’s FSD. It does less, but what it does, it does SO well. We road tripped it this past week to a family property a few hours away, charged it there, and drove back home. We had the bed filled with tools, chainsaw (just in case) and supplies needed at the cabin. Oh, and a powered cooler in the bed, plugged in to ProPower for the trip down and back. The Frunk held a 7 gallon fresh water carrier (water systems are shut down in the cabin for the winter), plus clothing and bedding. Back seats folded up, with our musical instruments and some food stuff in the spacious area there. Our truck arrived with an adapter that goes into the twist-lock 240v outlet and adapts to L14-50R. BTW, that twist lock 240v is what is on portable generators that handle 240v, so it actually does make sense if you’re connecting to a temporary generator port on a house, as that’s the cable style used, not L14-50. The Lightning is incredibly quiet on the road. Our Model Y is loud with road noise. Comfort-wise, the Lightning is far beyond our Model Y. And yes, having a truck that’s a truck is great where we live, dealing with dirt roads and driving on the hay fields and such. We live in an area where full size pickups are common, and where people turn their noses up at EVs. Lots of folks don’t even realize our truck is electric except that it’s so quiet. The Model Y is going to get sold in the near future.

Do some bed size measurements. For length, the F-150 Lightning is 5.5', I think the Rivian is only like maybe 5? The Cybertruck may be 6' at the bottom, but the back of the cab extends backwards into the bed, so may be only 5.5ish towards the top edge. What a lot of times is missed though is width. The F-150 is about 4'2" between the wheel humps, and about 5'2" from bed edge to bed edge. What is the Rivian? And most interestingly, given that the Cybertruck doesn't have wheel humps, I'm wondering if it's overall width is generally less than the other trucks or if they found a way to provide a similar width bed without humps.

Being in the U.K. and knowing none of them are suitable for our roads it would have to be the tesla for me. I just love it's bat shit craziness. First Tesla I've actually been interesting in astatically. I currently drive a Kia EV6.

Great comment. Buying a truck or car is an personal and emotional thing... and only one of them will get that "feeling" in real life and we can see that now in tons of KZbin "real world" videos without the echo chamber of various fanboys

CT has no spare (as you point out) and no dedicated storage spot for one, even if you pay the additional $1,350. for optional spare. Disappointing deal killer. If you suffered a flat, replacement size would be hard to find, and your day would likely include getting towed. Yikes.

Range extender + spare tire = no bed
@TroySavary8 ай бұрын
@@crimsondecade7420You would probably need to have the tire vertical to make it fit with the range extender, which means open tonneau cover. That would eat up the extra range from carrying the extender.

TBH, whilst a Tesla fan, I would have any one of them. But having sat in both the Rivian and Lightning, I didn't like the design of the Rivian interior, in particular then steering wheel controls. I have a Cybertruck on order here in the UK.
@margu4u8 ай бұрын
Good comparison, but to be fair/clear, most of (your) cons of the CT are just initial/temporary ! ... - no AP (will come soon for sure !) - softw. blocked differential lock - charging curve (350kw / 800v / v4) - range will improve w/ normal tires too (+ extender option coming) ... so shouldn't really be relevant cons for a buying decision, just initial stuff ! And it has some pros that the others can't update later (i.e. big cabin + big bed, but shorter anyway / steer by wire / no dents scratches). And the only real adv. of the lightning is the deeper frunk (but the ct frunk is more useable than rivians nevertheless (which is only useable for light stuff). ...The ct will soon have a ton of accesories too. PS. think the ct is even the better work truck !! ... ...no dents or scratches ! ...better turning radius (rear wheel steer) ...easier to steer ! (steer by wire)

Rivian is safer choice, but they will have to use 48 V architecture from Cybertruck to save 30-40 lbs of copper wire and save money, as they’re losing $30K each vehicle they sell.

I liked the review; but I didn't hear any notice to people regarding Cybertruck wait time - which is 40 years at the current rate of production. Just a bit of a prod at Tesla because after 6 weeks of production they haven't hit 500 deliveries yet. Ford Made 1500: F150 lightnings in their first week, and there after until they had their orderback log covered. So Cybertruck right now isn't really avaiable for years to anyone looking to buy one new.
@ordinaryhuman56458 ай бұрын
Where have you seen delivery numbers? I don't think Tesla has published anything on that yet. Also worth asking, compared to what? I'd be surprised if there were not more Cyber trucks produced within a year of deliveries beginning than Ford or Rivian did in year 1 with their trucks. Doesn't help much for someone ordering today though... long waits for sure.

Nope. The 4680 Model Y still charges slowly. Those batteries just suck.

You realize that it charges slower than anything because the battery is 2x the size of their cars, right?
@TroySavary8 ай бұрын
@@sprockkets No, the rate of charge is slow. Not just the actual time it takes. The charging curve is pretty bad, especially for a large battery.

@@TroySavary exactly. To be par would mean it should have a flat curve deep into the high soc.

EVDave in NC has a Lightning and a R1T. He tried taking the Lightning to Wyoming in the winter and the truck lost so much range he ended up borrowing an ICE truck from a friend and leaving behind the Lightning during the trip. He had also had a Mach-E. I don’t think he likes Ford navigation and that software updates had to be done at a Ford dealer.
@litestuffllc72498 ай бұрын
Long waits are one thing, decades another. Where can you see the cybertrucks - there is a fellow here on yourtube - who flies his drone over the Austin plant every day - if you monitor that you can see exactly how many Tesla produces; I'm actually generous there has only been 245 Cybertrucks roll out of that plant as of 14 Jan. Cybertruck deliveries will be low compared to F150 Lightning or Rivian even; reason, the entire delay is the screwed up 4680 cell which they can't produce efficiently.
@Ou8y2k28 ай бұрын
Musk porked the cybertruck. Rivian tried for a boutique offroader and succeeded but it isn't very versatile. I'm not a Ford guy, but I think they made the best electric truck with the Lightning. It can do anything and is big enough for a family.
