I live in Ireland and my first job (many years ago!) was in a timber/lumber yard. Twice a year we got a full shipload of construction lumber, mainly spruce, from Canada. There was always about fifty huge beams of hemlock in the cargoes. They were quickly snapped up by farmers and builders for use as the main roof beam in barns etc.

Just came across this on your hemlock. First hemlock I came across was in the upper peninsula of Michigan. On state land west of the porcupine mtns, they were on state land where there are abundance of waterfalls. These trees were over 3 feet in diameter and most the first limb was over 50 feet in the air. I couldn't believe that they were growing on the rock as big as they were. Just an experience I had and thought I'd share it.

There still holding the house up. I just padded them out to get a better r value of insulation since im in the north east. Had to sister up all the joists because of all the warping and settling over the years. After almost 100 years they were still extremely solid, and the wieght of one true 2x4 was like double that of the crap wood today. Hemlock is some solid dense wood

Nice video as always Nathan. Here in Virginia, the loggers will mow down a whole forest of hardwoods to get to one pine tree or hemlock. I've never understood it. Most of our hardwoods are turned into pallets or shoring. It makes me cry. Thank God I cut and mill my own. It's my only relief.

Hemlock is surprisingly stable, even with knots. I once made a whole set of lattice panels under a deck out of air dried hemlock. I think it was all just 1"X1", screwed to the 6"X6" pressure treated posts. After 15 years, that lattice (aka "rabbit fencing") didin't move a bit. It really is very nice stuff.

When you debark hemlock the bark looks like a big pile of porcupine quills, this jams up feed chains and belting. When sawing the knots which are hard will knock the edge off non-carbide saw teeth. Many commercial sawmills do not like to cut hemlock as the market is really not there for larger amounts. About the only time we would cut hemlock was when we had a order for a days worth of lumber, that was usually 30 to 50 k of board feet. We found it hard to sell the chips and sawdust too. These few logs that you are cutting are perfect for your mill. The planks are almost as good as American elm for lowboy decking. One more thing, when you try to pull a nail out of a dry hemlock plank, the nails hold in the board is amazing.

Years ago when I built a house from logs, I developed a sling from a serpentine belt with loops at each end , putting the belt at the balance axis, I could move 30' logs a few feet at a time with fair ease. I peeled the logs with a shovel and then some for furniture I finished out with a draw knife. Then coated the wood with tongue oil.

There is still way too much Hemlock here in upstate New York. Early logging operations went for the Oak, Chestnut and White Pine and left the Hemlock standing. Black Locust was used where rot could be a problem so it was used for fences and bottom sills, and you still see old fence posts along fields that have been there for a hundred years or more. But Hemlock is still used where vertical strength is needed, and deck builders sometimes get bad batches that dried to fast and they split and crack like crazy. A lot of old barns here were sided with Hemlock and it held up quite well and when the barns get torn down they re-use the siding for wall paneling and floors. Nice to see you using it, just dry it slow and it'll be fine.

Cliffside Acres unfortunately many areas around us have county/state quarantines due to several pests that are ravaging our eastern hardwoods. Emerald Ash borer is probably our biggest problems, but walnut twig beetle is also becoming an issue with Thousand Cankers disease and the ever present Asian long horn in maple that could pop up almost anywhere.

Oh ya hemlock is some nice wood to work with. My buddy's neighbor just cut down a whole bunch of old growth hemlock. 2 of them were about 4-6 ft in dia & around 50-60 ft tall. I was going over there to cut some up with my chainsaw mill. . And his brother-in-law beat me over there and cut them all up into 12 to 16 inch firewood rounds.. Yup I was steamed but what can you do. There's a few small trees on the ground yet, we'll se what happens. ??? After it sets in open air the grain takes on a beautiful brown tint to it. I like to make picture frames. & shelving boards out of it. Thank you for the remake on the video Nathan, can't get enough info . I enjoy it all...

In the later 1800’s early 1900’s in northern Pennsylvania Hemlock was cut for the chemicals in the bark. The skinned logs were left to rot in the forest. Huge chemical factories in Potter County Penna. Documented in the book “Whining Saws and Squealing Flanges”. Fabulous read.

Out of the Woods . They made paint thinner and other chemicals. Can’t look it up. I loaned the book out years ago and am trying to get it back. The woodsman lived in bark huts they built that looked like tepees. Very primitive. They did want oak and cherry and did cut lumber as well as pine. Whining saws were the band saws and squealing flanges were the rail cars. Very primitive rail road in the forest. All steam operated.

I always associate the name Hemlock as being poisonous but thankfully it's the plant not the tree!

Yes, where I'm from Hemlock is a byword for poison. Until very recently, I didn't know it had any other uses.

I use it to make furniture for cabins, works well, and finishes well, always leave some live edge without the bark

I'd recommend a dust mask. Ever hear the story about Socrates and hemlock. Hemlock is murder on bugs - for a reason. That's why builders like it for structural wood. Termites hate the stuff.
