My pronouns are he/him/his. My theology is primarily Christo-centric - Jesus is at the centre and it is against Him that all values are bounced off. I believe all people are created in the image of God and are children of God and are heirs to the throne of God - no conditions - therefore every single person we meet deserves our love, and respect.

This is a long story: When I worked in the ER at a Level 4 hospital in KY(figure it out) was complained on, because the Nurses (Me included) were giving baths/showers to the homeless with tax payers money.. We nurses started buying our own shampoos and soaps and rags and brought in, and bathed them our self.. then came the complaint of using the water. We took a 50 cent decline of a raise to help them.. This went on for years. This is just being a good Human. We are all servants.

Wow this story really touched me deeply that you and colleagues did this for people who did not have the means to do it themselves . In my town we colleagues t clothing shoes, socks, gloves, hats, toothpaste, toothbrushes hair brush and combs, depdorant/anti perspirant, condoms, sanitary wear for menstruation, clean up wipes .plastic bags for used products. It's not simply a need to feed their bodies they need to feel clean, to brush their teeth and hair . I personally think that to wash the feet of another human puts me at the same level as them the same importance or value, they are not worth less than I am .Its almost like saying never mind the money the status ,the clothes we are the same inside .

Mr. Rogers did that episode in response to desegregated public pools in the US. When the law passed stating that public pools had to desegregate, rather than follow the law, a majority of public pools closed rather than have to share the water with people of colour. The Mr. Rogers episode was considered shocking for its day. Mr. Rogers was a wonderful man.

@@Truffle85 Sadly, it wasn't uncommon for Christians to teach kindness and humbleness in the days prior to the "moral majority": which was neither "moral" or a "majority". I remember my kindergarten teacher well, as she was also a dear friend to my mother. My mother left the S. Baptist Church in the early 60s because of their bigotry. When the "sermons" became all about fighting the 1964 Civil Rights Act, she left in disgust. I don't remember, but I think my kindergarten teacher also left the church at the same time, for the same reason. I loved Mrs. Bill, my teacher, because she loved us kids and had no problem getting us to behave. She was the most "Mr. Rogers" person I ever met. No kid got scolded, when there was an issue, she turned it into a teaching moment.

YUP. Basically Jesus was teaching his disciples that LEADERS and those who want to be LEADERS, must be first in their "ministry" or SERVICE TOWARD OTHERS. Good bosses never tell those they supervise to "do as I say, not as I do," nor do they hypocritically and cruelly assign all of the "scut work" to underlings and refuse to take on any of those tasks themselves.

Rev. Ed! My $0.02 as a U.S.-American Mormon. Call me irrelevant; am used to it. But. For what it's worth I love you and your content! I went to Québec on an LDS mission way back when. Not that I convinced a single soul to embrace our religion. I did learn French and got my 3 dgrees in it. I did have many opportunities to listen to some confessions that people may not have proferred to anyone else. I/we did knock on a door of a young wife and mother who was part of the new Québécois bourgeoisie. (1970s). She politely and firmly-enough said she was "pas intéressée.". It was hot and humid as it can be only in the main island of Muntreal, surrounded as it is by the waters of the Saint-Laurent. (Am not gonna mention the equal and opposite, humid cold Nov-April!). This gentlewoman hesitated a couple seconds before shutting the door. "Mais je peux vous offrir un verre d'eau. Vous voulez? But I can offer you a glass of water. That good?? We took it. And to this day no one can take away from me this direct accomplishment of Jesus's Word. I remain astonished after all these years. Yes. "Amen" threefold to your online sermon, my friend! "" "" "" But now to my Mormon 2 cents: I was, probably wrongly, less cool headed and charitable than you. To me, this "ad" was--had been--a trivialization of Jesus's action. An action which I believe no human could make up. ...this, in calm defiance of the "higher criticism" of the 19th century movement and its inheritors to this day. And so. I still find the superbowl take on this originary Christian act of footwashing blasphemous. However, I shall let The Word, engraven upon your hands to a greater extent than It is on mine, work on my mind and heart. Until by "turning and turning we come down right." I trust you to have known always-already that this thought comes from good brothers and sisters who called themselves "Shakers." My only regret is that you live so far away from my native "Rockies." We could do lunch or brunch and just shoot the breeze now and again. Cheers, Mark (rural northern Arizona)

I agree that Jesus "gets us", but it's the majority of evangelicals who _refuse_ to understand Jesus. I'm hoping my pastor talks about this, I'd love to hear her thoughts. I left the S. Baptist church over 25 years ago. I'd been wanting to for awhile because of the lies and hate I witnessed there. My last day in that church, I welcomed a black family who came to visit and sat with them in the back of the church. They seemed uncomfortable (probably because they realized they had the only black faces in the sanctuary) but I assured them they were welcome, and I'm glad they came. After the service, I was walking to my single adult Sunday School class when the teacher pulled me aside and asked me who those people were I was sitting with. I told him they came to visit, they just moved here and are looking for a church home. He told me that he hoped I told them that _their_ church is on the East side of town. Yes, the "black" church. I told him, "I did no such thing, why should I?". He didn't answer, just looked furious. I didn't go to that class, I walked out with my 7 year old son and never came back. 18 years later, I'm living in California and a suggested YT video thumbnail pic caught my eye of a smiling blond woman wearing a 7 foot tall, green -preying- "Praying" Mantis costume. The channel is a United Methodist Church about 30 miles from me. I watched, expecting a clown show, but what I experienced was a funny and very intelligent Bible lesson. Probably half the church is LGBTQIA (I'm a couple of those, not saying which). Pastor Jane is a former stand-up comic (at 2nd City Chicago, she hung out with the Belushi bros. before SNL) and actress who had her calling while working on a reboot of a 70s sitcom in Australia. Her calling was to bring people to Jesus with her gift of humor, and she succeeded with at least one person, me! I've continued to watch almost every Sunday (I don't have transportation to visit in person). Her heart is in the same place as Rev. Ed, and her sermons cover topics such as "white fragility", and Joseph Campbell's "Power of Myth" which I found very enlightening. Every June, she leads the church congregation in the Pride parade, dressed as a giant Bible with a rainbow bookmark fluttering in the breeze. I'm joining them this year if I have to take a bus! 🏳‍🌈 I just know that after I watch her sermons, I feel good and hope starts to creep back into my sad, tired heart. My family in Texas stopped speaking to me years ago, but they informed me that listening to a FEMALE pastor would be my Superslide straight to Hell! They don't know the rest, that I'm a member of the "alphabet people" whom they hate passionately. No need for them to know, and I moved 1500 miles away from them 23 years ago.

Thanks for sharing your story. I understand. I still live among them. But hopefully by the grace of God not much longer. Their hypocrisy blows my mind. Now they seem to take such pleasure in hurting people. I'm so glad to have found this community. It's not perfect. I have found bad people here as well. But not many and they seem to move on quickly. You and I don't share the same issues. They just hate me because I think we're all the same in God's eyes. I try to remember we are all children of God. I have to work really hard to not have hate in my heart for them. It's super hard when they're family. So now I'm working on leaving the only home I've ever known because I'm not just different now. Now I'm hated here. Before I was just a misguided liberal. The woman you speak of sounds amazing. Is any of her work available online? I wish you the best of luck on your journey. Sending you love, hope, and peace.

My daughter was one of the outraged. She said it was not biblically correct because Jesus washed the feet of the "chosen" disciples. The infererence is that only the disciples were worthy. She is where she is on her journey. As a volunteer chaplain, I was asked along with several others to hold a prayer vigil for one of our friends mothers who was transitioning (actively dying). While others sang songs of praise, I stroked her hair and face while telling her how beautiful she was. I thanked her for her contributions in this world. I rubbed her hands with lotion and then, I washed her feet. I am getting choked up just writing about it. I felt humbled and honored as I washed her feet. I felt I was preparing her for a very sacred journey. What I took away from the experience is that when you wash another souls feet, you are honoring them...who they are as children of God...where they are in their journey while also recognizing that God sees us all as "chosen" disciples.. equals regardless of perceived differences.

If they are "up in arms" and saying Christ didn't preach love, then they clearly have never read the teachings of Jesus or of this apostles. In fact, they haven't read the Bible at all or else they want to remake God and Christ in their own image--proud, scornful, vengeful, punishing, implacable and brutal. They MISSED some major teachings of Christ. "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." Jesus, at John 15:13. He knew what he needed to do to save us all. Then, there is the Kingly (Royal) Law: "“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And the second is like it: You shall LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Jesus direct command to all his followers-- “I am giving you a new commandment, that you LOVE ONE ANOTHER just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love among yourselves.”-John 13:34, 35. And in the beautiful words of Jesus' Apostle, Paul-- "If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."-- 1 Corinthians Chapter 13

How about, as Christians, you try not to judge, because we are all going to be judged? Do unto others? Love thy neighbor? Our Constitution doesn't say anything about anyone having to agree with what anybody is doing. You just have to abide by their, and your, right to do it. It seems so simple.🤘💙

Not long ago I had my recoiling from the leper moment. This man to whom I was ministering was physically repulsive. I kept him at arms length and found an excuse to quickly leave. Later at home, much later to my initial shame , I felt the presence of Christ telling me to return. The weather was miserable. The rain was relentless and I almost wrecked on the interstate. I finally arrived and told him how sorry I was that I had stayed away. He said he understood. At that moment I bent and kissed his forehead and gave him Holy Communion. I cried and told him I would see him soon. Sometimes it is through our shying away that we discover our need to embrace.

I remember from many years back that this act by Jesus was not only one of serving kindness to another - but to remind ourselves in the presence others that "I am not better than you." It was a statement to remind ourselves that not only am I humble enough to wash your feet but that YOU ARE WORTHY of the dignity of having your feet washed. This is a gift that benefits both of us spiritually - and without YOU being here I would not have the opportunity to benefit from the opportunity to gift you this act of kindness.

I'm glad you brought up the aspect of how shaming it was for Jesus to wash his disciples' feet. That is something we often miss today because our society doesn't consider serving others to be a shameful act only lesser people do, like they did in the ancient near east. Jesus is purposefully humiliating himself in the eyes of his disciples, and humiliating them for following a Rabbi who would do this; all so he can strip away their worldly ideas of who is great and who isn't. Until they are able to give their lives for the least of these, and even become the least of these themselves in the process, they cannot follow Jesus. Who do we look down on and judge? That is who we serve, even if it brings ridicule and scorn. I suspect for the audience "He Gets Us" was focusing on, it was conservative Christians being challenged to serve LGBT, pro-choice, Environmentalists, Immigrants, exc. But that is only one side of the coin. The other side also has to ask, who would God have me serve? I think that's why, when you look at the picture carefully, the feet of both the washer and the washee are bare. Because they should both be washing each other's feet. The world would be a very different place if we could somehow pull that off.

Yep. Humility, too. The people screaming the loudest can't imagine humbling themselves in any way. Edit: The fact that the young woman was sitting in front of a family planning center may also mean she went for birth control so she wouldn't be put in the position of having to make a decision about an abortion. A childbook I loved when i was younger had two lines in their code that resonate with this message. "others first self last" and "survival of all or none". Points to anyone who recognizes the book. another favorite line from the book "one rain drop raises the sea", Ed keep being that rain drop and lead people away from their darker sides. Congrats.

Foot washing is also an act of humility. It's in the New Testament John 13:14-15, "I then, being your Lord and Master have washed your feet; ye ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you." (KJV) I believe the message should be considered, and if it aligns with Jesus' teaching, then I say be okay with it. In the book of Philippians 1:18, "But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice." (NIV) I truly don't understand the outrage. I thought the message was good. Thank you Reverend Trevor for your discernment on this topic. I appreciated your interpretation.

The message Jesus was teaching is simple: we must be servants to each other. We must caring, tolerant, kind, loving, and supportive to each other. And as Christians, we must lead by example. My first thought when I saw this add was "finally, Christians are actually telling us what Jesus actually taught us to do, to be helpful and supportive of other people no matter what their background is. The add itself was very uplifting to me. And I find it so interesting that it was mostly people who claim not to be Christian, recognized that lesson that Jesus taught instead of the people who claim to be Christian.

You know it's weird to say this, but I know several people I could describe as being emblimatic of the teachings of Jesus, in action at least. Most of them are queer is some capacity, and the majority of them are other pagans. I going to assume that the fact that I mostly move in majority queer and majority pagan spaces biases my experence there. Still I truely hope that Rev Ed isn't the only public Cristian who seems to really get the teachings and example of the person the religion was built around. I see nothing wrong with queers and pagans taking action to help our comunities, and honestly if Christians wanted to team up to provide the needed care on a wider scale. Well there's a lot of work to be done, and an extra pair of hands is useful. I don't care who you worship, why you care, I just care that you do care. I say this so often but, We're stronger together.

Thank you. I knew I could count on you to give the best lesson on this commercial. There's a video out there by Tony Campolo, talking about how he was up in the wee hours, while traveling in a strange city. He happened across a diner in a seedy part of town, and as he sat there at the counter, a bunch of prostitutes came in--as if leaving their shift. The women were regulars, and the cook was a grizzled character with a dirty apron. It comes out that one of the ladies had a birthday coming up. She said she'd never had a birthday party. Well, as the ladies leave, Tony conspires with the cook to throw this woman a birthday party in the diner--cake, decorations, the whole shebang. The cook is excited to make a birthday cake, and he gets all the woman's friend to come to the diner. Anyway, when the birthday girl comes back, she's overwhelmed by the surprise. Her reaction to this small kindness was over the top. Anyway, as the party goes along, the cook finally asks Tony what he does for a living. He admits he leads a church. The cook denies this: "No you don't. There's no church leader who throws birthday parties for prostitutes. If there was, I would GO to that church!"
