Because when they unlocked the boss gate and go inside they ended up in Mad Gears from Sonic 4 Episode 1 and everyone starts complaining due to horrible flashbacks before Eggman comes attacking in his "Flying Eggman" machine with everyone going all over the stage avoiding the dangerous traps while defeating the Evil Genius.
