In an old episode of Oprah, Bette Midler talked about how she and Shelley Long did not get along. It’s too bad because the two of them are amazing both separately and in this movie!

Krakatoa: East of Java has a special place in my heart for being absolutely terrible ... But I saw it as a kid so it may be super racist or sexist or ableist or other -ists that flew right over my head at that age.

I am a huge disaster flick fan - favorites are Poseidon Adventure, where Red Buttons' nebbishy haberdasher is the real hero, and the original Airport, which is the most inadvertently feminist film ever produced.

I think the reason Bette and Shelley didn't work together again is the same reason very few actors worked with Shelley again and the reason that after Shelley's handful of 80s blockbusters we didn't see her again until she had a small part on Modern Family. She was apparently a complete nightmare diva.

Ok, so with the love of 80s movies and Peter Coyote, you HAVE to check out The Legend of Billie Jean! It's an 80s cheesefest extravaganza (with a killer soundtrack). And yes, The Great Outdoors holds up :)

I really need to hop on the patreon wagon. mostly to request "The Money Pit" it's another fabulous Shelly Long performance, with some solid slapstick comedy. there's some yikesy moments, and I think it's one of the few movies to date where Tom Hanks plays an unlikable character. should put a hunt on for the VHS

Years ago on a talk show interview Bette Midler answered a question about working with Shelly Long again. But Midler said Long was tough to work it on Outrageous Fortune. She alluded to Long having some personal issues on her own that affected her attitude on set. However Midler did say she might work with her again but yeah it never happened.

I was around eight years old when I first saw this movie I was obsessed! The first time My grandmother ended up renting this and Little Darlings and not looking at the rating just thought the titles were kid friendly. I learned a lot that weekend 😂 I also wish they would’ve done more films together. Apparently they had a little bit of a feud but did they really or was that just the media pitting them against each other however I do distinctly remember a Bette Midler interview where she says it was difficult working together

Well I was 10 I would have never picked up on that at 11 or 10 in 87 or 88 I didn't understand that growing up in Abington Township PA basically Philly Most of my friends were black and I saw a bunch of Funny Eddie Murphy Movies like both 48 Hours movies Trading Places Coming to America and those Movies deliberately made charged and obvious racist situations into funny jokes so with the climate in Abington Township PA back then (if you don't believe me reference The Goldberg's the show it is exactly the same town and they even have an episode where Adam had to be filled in what racism in a serious sense actually was) that's why identify with that show so well it's my childhood sameplace same time period but anyway ignorance isn't an excuse but I was a Scrappy Irish Boxer Growing up in Philly and heard guys in the Boxing gym talk about racist mother fers this and that and I'm sorry I saw Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte or Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd go back and watch trading places it's funny as hell but the premise idea with Mortimer and his Brother was racist as hell So I apologize for the Cultural difference through time but since I couldn't spot the Racism it made the Erotic moments easy
