Way to go, this is good for you. Nice reminder f these jaws being able to mount to the outside. We sure like your counter bore bit being used by you for the holes in the second or new set of vise jaws. We always like the tools we do not yet have your surface grinder sure puts a nice accurate finish on them new jaws. Thank you, Lance & Patrick.

I think it “very cool” that you ground the ends..... As a viewer I could tell that every time you looking at those jaws you were going to think, “Why didn’t I just grind the ends”. You are a craftsman, and I really enjoyed this video. And thank you for not “settling”. Cheers

Lol. I've been an avid woodworker since my Mom bought me a saber saw for Christmas when I was 11. I'm 71 now and always wanted to try machining (I bought a mini lathe and a mini mill). I wondered why they drilled and taped both ends of the vise. Thanks for clearing that up.

Nice project especially having a surface grinder. Probably the camera but it looks like the rear jaw is not touching the rear jaw stop, when i watched you put them on it looked like the cap screws would touch in the hole and i thought that was the cause but as you did not mention anything i put it down to camera angle. well done on the 10k subs, next stop 50k as you are worth it.

To remove and reinstall the jaw bolts, I would not use an air wrench- too noisy. I'd buy ball-end hex wrenches. This is a great project to emulate in my own shop. Thanks.

I’ve got a cheap 4” mill vise I bought 22 years ago. Since I never used a 4” before I bought that one, I didn’t realize it wasn’t really “standard”, that is, met the dimensions of a Kurt. I bought a pair of SnapJaws. They didn’t fit. It turns out that a 4” vise should have 3/8” screws, exactly 2.5” apart, and this didn’t. The cheaper vises have 5/16” screws, and the spacing was just far enough off so that I couldn’t get both screws in. Since the accuracy was never too high, but just barely acceptable in the beginning, and has deteriorated since, meaning that really accurate setup had become more effort than necessary, I decided to stop using it. More recently I bought a good Grizzly vise on sale from them for $315, which, from people I know in the business, say is about as good as the $575 4” Kurt DX4. That has standard spacing, and the proper 3/8” screws. Plus, it opens 6.25”. I never trusted the outside jaws on my old vise because of the smaller screws. Using them to just hold the jaws under pressure against the vise faces, on the inside isn’t a problem. But on the outside, the screws are under tension. With the jaws so high and far away from the screws, there’s a risk of stretching the screws, and having them fail. So caution to not tighten the vise too much when using them. 3/8” screws are more than twice as strong, and aren’t as much of a problem, additionally reassuring with the much higher quality of the 90,000 psi castings.

Nice job! How does your PM mill do turning that large slitting saw? Does it have more than enough power for this tool or is it just enough? This is the mill I am considering getting
@MrPragmaticLee6 жыл бұрын
Brandon Tscheschlog It handles the slitting saw very well; however, I've found that the key to slitting like this is to have a quality saw. I tried some of the cheap import ones, but they would fail when cutting anything other than aluminum. Of course that seems to be true for end mills as well.
@weshowe516 жыл бұрын
With the setup you have for the chamfers, 0.045" cut is giving you an 0.064" flat... just a touch over 1/16". A 0.044" cut would put you spot on. The magic number to calculate that is 0.707 (half of the square root of two). 71% is close enough (meaning 0.044" is 71% of 0.0625 [1/16"]). They're equilateral right triangles, and thus have easy rules.

MrPragmaticLee Great. Recently picked up a Walker surface grinder. It’s basically the same as the Harig 612, just a bit older. I believe Harig purchased walker and incorporated that design into their product line. I’ve been trying to find more information on that subject. I hope to add a power feed to it.
@johncrea93956 жыл бұрын
Did you check to see if the outside fixed jaw was parallel to the inside fixed jaw?Also, since this is a Kurt clone, did you check to see how much the moveable outside jaw moved up when the vise was tightened - since the kurt design pulls the inside of the moveable jaw DOWn when the vise is tightened? Lastly, sine tou are using the top edge of the vise jaw bodies as a reference point, did you sweep that top surface for flatness and co-planar? None of these are important for non-precise work using the outside jaws, but could be an error inducing issue with precise work John
