My first husband and I had a log and stone house built. They just did the shell. The rest was up to us and my father to complete. Such a challenging job. Nothing was plum or level. We got it done, chinking and all. It turned out beautiful if I do say so myself. We had our daughter and lived very happily for a year in our log home. Tragedy struck our lives. My husband was killed in a car accident. Due to the house being so remote and having a small child. I had to move away. I held onto the log house for a while but sadly I had to sell it. I'm glad to have had that experience. Watching this video brought back very old memories. Snow and ice on the sub floor mud everywhere. getting pregnant and losing the baby in that period of time. I have gone on too long. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am 71 now so this happened a vey long time ago.

Quality beats quantity on Saturdays or any day for that matter. Outsider has been very consistent for more than a few years with extremely high quality content. Some videos have exceeded an hour, a very few are less than 10 minutes. Everyone has certainly been worth my time. Being a KZbin content creator is very challenging. Building an extremely high quality cabin in the backwoods of Canada is an extreme challenge.

Looking good. I lived in a log cabin that was about 90 years old. It was moved from its original spot and put back up with a new massive fireplace and double loft with an arched cedar bridge between the two lofts. In the coldest part of the winter, i would fill a cast iron pan with hot coals from the fireplace and put it under the engine of the car, take my shower, and get in the car that would start as if it was 30 degrees instead of 30 below. I liked that cabin, you will enjoy yours i`m sure.

Hi Outsider: I chinked my log cabin around 1965 using a shovel, sweat board & dry cement with sand.& some lime for whitening. 60 years later I have not had to repair it once. I've always attributed our success to the metal lathing I applied first. Ibelive that it allowed the filler to withstand the stresses of time & annual, seasonal temperature change. Stay safe Brian 81
@TheOutsiderCabin3 жыл бұрын
Wow you obviously did a good job of it! I agree that the metal lath is a game changer for chinking. It gives the mortar a proper backbone to resist cracking and crumbling over time. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience, my friend. 👍🙂

Can I ask if you have the ratio of dry cement and sand and how much lime? My log home was built in 1980. The chinking is falling apart. The metal lath is still intact. Would you recommend to just chink over the existing metal lath? Thank you.

I said "Wow, look..." and ALL the righties watched that game (we had 3 lefties, and the other said "huh" and went back to his crossword) to the finish instead of talking about rugby and telling lies about the weekend.
