A log cabin just doesn't feel complete without a natural stone hearth...so I installed one! Just in time for the first snow too. I also give an update on the accident I had a year ago at the cabin...

As always, great content. I work in the trades and never really had the opportunity to observe a hearth being laid down. I have a much greater appreciation now for how many times a stone has to be muscled around from the time it lands on to property until the time of the finished product. Glad to hear of your progress from the grinder accident, your injury wasn’t for nothing I’ve used grinders and cut offs a lot and every time I grab one now I am instantly reminded of your mishap and exercise that much more caution.

I suspect there would be 2 differences from what Outsider just showed us. They would place the stone with thinset mortar and use grout between for majority of houses. The second difference would be stone tile instead of field stone. Even odd shapes they would work with the tiles usually.

Who, but GOD, could have created so many different colours of leaves to engulf such a vast variety of trees , to then fall & carpet the ground in such magnificence!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU for sharing, esp with those of us living in the tropics or sub-tropics where such a phenomena does not occur. As for the finished product of your stone hearth...... WOW!!!! I am very happy to see you use the cement board under your stone. It not only provides a good base but it will save your cabin from burning down, I had a friend who almost lost his home by placing the stone on the subfloor, When the stone cracks, and it will in time, the sparks from you stove will work their way through and on to the base material. Many local building codes require the base material to be a cement type just for this reason. Good job!

Wow! That accident (I hadn’t seen it before) just shows that mishaps can happen to even the most careful of us. It was truly cringe-worthy. Your stone hearth is beautiful! When I was a child, my brother and I joined our mother and a neighbor and her children to gather stones for a stone patio for us and one for the neighbor. We spent a lot of time jigsawing those stones into a beautiful patio. I don’t remember cutting stone but my father might have helped when he had time after work. Stay safe!

Another beautiful video. Glad your arm is better. Pro trick for the mortar - use two buckets. Dip your sponge in the clean water bucket, wipe up as much grout as it will hold, then squeeze the rag, dip into the clean bucket and as soon as water fills into sponge, quickly remove it and squeeze the dirty water into a second sponge. By doing this, your clean water bucket will remain cleaner longer and you'll be able to remove more grout without making water bucket changes.

Thanks Brother Outsider, that was REALLY cool to watch! I had questions about what you were doing but you ended up answering them during the process. Like the purpose of laying the cement board for example. My thoughts and prayers to your family and you during this 1st year of 'Holidays Without.' I especially feel my mom's absence during Thanksgiving and Christmas and I suspect your 1st holidays without Dad will be the same. I like what Bill Johnson, Sr. Pastor at Bethel Church in Redding, CA said about the recent passing of his wife: "1st we have seasons where we miss them, then (at some point just) moments." And it's all normal. Though I don't know of any Scripture to support it I like to believe that they still see/know what's going on with us here. Mostly just the Peace of God (Phil.4:7) helps us in our hearts and minds to be at rest about it. CONGRATS as well on Episode 100! Another Outside milestone to be sure. 💯🥳

I still cringe when I see that grinder accident> I am so happy that, at last, the metal fragments are gone. The cabin keeps looking warmer and cozier every time. You are a true craftsman and a wonderful tribute to your father. We all miss him and fondly remember the great team you two were. Great work!!

I have been living vicariously through your log cabin build for your family. What a gift to your family & the memories of working with your Dad to pass along. Thank you for bringing back warm fuzzy feelings of working along side my own Dad to solve dilemmas of needed renovations. (I took a crowbar to the downstairs shower because I xould not find it in my heart to shower with critters that had many many many more legs than I had. Poor Dad, he came in, asked what I was doing, I told him, that no more showering with may legged critters. He replied what are we going to put there?. I said we are going shopping. My Dad was amazingly patient, was he not? )

Glad your arm is much better now. You are quiet a soldier I knew you had hurt yourself quiet badly but you have never complained. I am so happy that the metal shard is out now. The stone work looks lovely.

I love how light the interior is. Most cabins are so dark but yours is my favorite.

And what better way to celebrate the compleation than a mug of fresh perked coffee. BTW, that looks exactly like my percolator that I use on my wood stove in winter and rocket stove in the summer.
