Another one: Mega Man 2 on NES. The original Mega Man underperformed, and wasn't a critical hit either. Capcom didn't even want to fund a sequel. Kinda surprised there was no mention of Fire Emblem Awakening. Game was such a revitalization of the franchise when it was originally planned to be the last entry, that nowadays you can't go anywhere without someone complaining about how many Fire Emblem characters there are in Smash.
@jardex22753 жыл бұрын
Very true! The Fire Emblem series only had niche appeal outside of Japan, and sales had been declining for each subsequent entry. The developers treated Awakening as the final game in the series by including elements from all their previous games, including a customizable avatar, pairing units, having their offspring fight alongside you, and an added casual mode which revives your units after each battle. The game became an instant success, outselling every previous entry in the series, and ensuring that the franchise wouldn't be canned.

Carlos' death messed me up when I first played it. It was a genuinely chilling moment where you could really see the normally flippant and psychopathic Boss silent and mournful. @@Her_Imperious_Condescension Indeed. When Shaundi got kidnapped later on in one of the missions I was beside myself because we already knew that our gang members weren't immortal. In the third he just... gets hurt once, and goes out like a punk? I spent the whole game waiting for him to make his dramatic reappearance because "There's no way they'd have such an amazing character get killed offscreen in such a pathetic manner." ... So I was wrong. Resident Evil 5 is legitimately one of my favorite video games. So are RE1, RE2, and RE4. I don't consider 4 or 5 to be Resident Evil games at all, though. To me, Resident Evil means survival horror. It both coined the term *and* created the genre. And there's very little that is less terrifying than always being secure in the fact that you will never be in a situation you can't handle head-on.

Far Cry 2 - arguably still the best game in the franchise before the formula set in, and a massive improvement on the janky and borderline unplayable original. Just Cause 2 - the addition of the iconic grappling hook saw this sequel take the mediocre original and tie it to an exploding barrel, launching it hilariously into the stratosphere. Dark Souls - not a sequel to Demon Souls, naturally, but definitely the installment in the Souls franchise which saw it take off into world domination as a series and, indeed, genre. Duke Nukem 3D - very much the zenith of Duke's story, taking the 2D platform and shooting into a bloody, catchphrase-laden, new dimension (... and then the nadir of Duke Nukem Forever can go on the follow up list of sequels which destroyed their franchise). Hopefully one of these might make Commentator Edition, but a great list to begin with.

Great list, albeit I gotta admit, Tomb Raider: Legend not being included kinda surprised me. While TR: The Angel Of Darkness wasn't completely terrible (best plot and atmosphere in the series, fight me), many people saw it as a point where the series stagnated and remained unable to successfully reinvent itself. Had Legend been anything but absolutely stellar, we might have been forced to say goodbye to the gaming's queen 20 years ago.
@Ronan347533 жыл бұрын
It's kind of strange. Legend to me is a game that managed to both save & kill the Tomb Raider franchise. I mean it's one of my favourites, and the only TR game by Crystal Dynamics I hold in high regard. But in a way it's success prevented Core Design from ever making a comeback with their "Anniversary Edition". And led to Crystal stagnating the franchise, with no one to keep them on track or compete even (leading them to turning Tomb Raider into 2nd rate Uncharted).

I see why pepople think it was AC2 that made the franchise (because it did establish core mechanics at least untill Origins), but for me the best game was original AC. Since AC2 it was linear mission-based adventure with side quests, collectibles and other typical activities in open world, a lot like GTA or something. AC1 was much more immersive in a lot of ways. The best part was that you could complete the entire game with UI completely disabled, without map, all you needed was vantage points and eagle vision. Also much more liberal approach to story progression, where you are basically left in a city with a target, and it's up to you what side activities you will partake to get closer to it, or not doing anything, just trying to track it blindly with eagle vision. Also you had (almost) actual historical assasins and templars in their proper setting, and untill the very end all the eternal assasins-templars struggle with aliens involved thing was just subtle clues keeping you interested, not batshit crazy stories of following games. But that's just my opinion, and I know it's not very popular)

I think Resident Evil 7 single handily did way more to mess me up with anything involving bodily trauma then anything else (Which is saying something considering that I watched the saw movies, watched the Bioshock trailer where the guy gets his hand drilled right through, saw that Outlast game where fingers were cut off and watched a stream of that one FPS game where you watch your arms get pulled right off from first person perspective by this giant mech and then get beat with them). Basically, I cherish my hands alot more then I did before and I was already messed up from watching Crono's Finger nail get ripped out in God of War 3. Also, can we mention the cleverness in the current naming of the latest Resident Evil Games, specifically in how clever they utilize the Roman numerals in the text (The 7 in "Resident Evil" and then 8 in "Village"? Feel like I'm gonna have way too much fun trying to guess the next title just based on that clever play.

Fallout 3 has an optional third person mode, odd when people call it or Skyrim a first person game. I tend to toggle the perspective back & fourth. Fallout 4 & New Vegas are like that too As a fan of The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim, I actually went back to play The Elder Scrolls Arena. I couldn't get out of that first area. Barely killed all the enemies with the complicated gameplay, yay. Health is way too low, I'll just rest for a bit. Enemies are resurrected, but but but I haven't even left the area yet. Resting didn't even restore all my health, I'm gonna die (and I totally did). Morrowind & Oblivion, like Skyrim, also have an optional third person mode. Despite getting lost in Morrowind, it was a vast improvement (I couldn't really get Dagger Fall to work on the PC I had at the time, perhaps it's time to try it again, so I can't judge that one). Would Arena's sequels be rescuing it from disaster 🤔 I really enjoyed The Witcher, although not everyone that actually played it would agree, many haven't even played that game though. The Witcher might not have the best graphics or gameplay (it's not that hard), but the story is good (and mods can definitely help with the graphics). Now The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings improved the graphics & gameplay. Obviously The Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt is the best in the trilogy. Someone on Steam says The Witcher has the worst gameplay, guess they haven't experienced Arena's mechanics. I couldn't get use to Resident Evil's tank controls, but the fans screaming "you'll get use to it" couldn't even get use to The Witcher's gameplay lol 😝. Anyway I'm sure many would also say The Witcher's sequels rescued it from disaster, especially the third game

Just Arcania? The not-so-open-world RPG? Plough anything that was established earlier? Anyhoo. Also, the first Gothic may have been underrated and difficult to get into, but I still think that kind of gritty, realistic-ish fantasy setting can be very intriguing. The follow-up series of Risen and Elex prove that point, as do other games following in a similar vein. Then again, to this day Gothic 1 and 2 remain criminally underrated in most of the world. I hope the upcoming remake of the first one will right that terrible wrong, supposing it'll be any good :D

While I don't disagree with Fallout 3 being on the list, I have to take issue with the reasoning. Van Buren (the codename for Black Isle's Fallout 3) wasn't what killed Interplay. Shuttering Black Isle, with their proven track record, in favor of diverting resources toward more ill-conceived multi-platform projects, like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, which absolutely _was_ a disaster, killed Interplay! And as the most recent "Fallout" game before 3 made the franchise relevant, again, you _can_ give F3 credit for rescuing the franchise, even if still think the series has never quite recaptured the glory days of the first two games. In fact, by that same logic, Firaxis's XCOM: Enemy Unknown belongs on this list. The original UFO Defense is my favorite game of all time, and Terror From the Deep is a good game that suffers from being too much of the same while listening too much to people who said the first game was too easy (never realizing that was mostly due to a bug that reverted the game to the easiest difficulty level, regardless of what you selected). Even Apocalypse was perfectly enjoyable, even if it was marred a bit by a desire to court both the real-time and turn-based audiences and, as a result, doing both a disservice. It was all downhill from there, though. Interceptor was dogfighting flight sim in space that no one asked for, followed by Alliance, a first-person shooter which never saw the light of day... and Enforcer, a third-person shoot which, sadly, did! At that point, the series went into a coma, where it was all but forgotten until 2K announced their squad-based shooter: XCOM (which eventually became, after several false starts, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified), leading to the long-time fans who did remember the franchise's glory days screaming bloody murder (or "Betrayal!"). When Firaxis finally announced their game, it wasn't with much optimism, but if anyone was going to bring the series off life support, it was them... and they did a remarkably good job. While even Jake Solomon, the lead designer, readily concedes that, in the process of filling in those lowest lows from the original, they also lost the highest peaks, it was still a perfectly enjoyable game, when taken on its own terms... and it laid the groundwork for Firaxis to take the series in their own direction. Much like the 3D Fallouts, I feel the Firaxis XCOMs should really be considered as a separate franchise... but one that is still worthy of recognition, and not just because they introduce a whole new generation to a series they'd likely never heard of (though that certainly didn't hurt). They could both qualify for a list like this, though, since both franchises were completely dead in the water before the new era brought them back into relevance.
@Jessie_Helms3 жыл бұрын
Well, if you ever wanted to make basically the opposite of this- games that basically killed a franchise- I think Thief, the sorta-reboot sorta-sequel of the series deserves a spot. It’s one of the only story games I’ve ever left unfinished.
