OUTSTANDING F-35B ROLLING VERTICAL LANDING (SRVL) SLOW LANDING IN STORMY WEATHER • RAF MARHAM

F-35B Lightning aircraft of 617 Squadron and 207 OCU based at RAF Marham request a "Slow Land", which is a rolling land but to be more precise, an SRVL landing (Shipborne Rolling Vertical Landing). Shipborne rolling vertical landing (SRVL) is a method used to land a STOVL aircraft such as the F-35B and uses the vertical thrust, the lift fan along with the lift from the wings.
These F-35B's were landing in the extreme conditions from beginning of Storm Jocelyn. With the runway wet, colour code yellow and gusts of up to 40mph at the time, it made for some impressive footage.
Rolling landings enable the F-35B to land on carriers with an increased weapon and fuel load and will use the aircraft's computer controlled disc brakes. On the weekend of 13/14 October 2018, the Royal Navy announced that British test pilot Peter Wilson made history when he conducted the first-ever shipborne rolling vertical landing (SRVL) with a F-35 Lightning in test aircraft BF-04 onto HMS Queen Elizabeth. Her sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales, is equipped with the full 'Bedford Array' Visual Landing Aid system. By taking inputs from inertial references to stabilise against deck motions, combined with a ship-referenced velocity vector in a helmet-mounted display, a pilot can fly an accurate approach to the deck on a constant glidepath.

A wildly impressive video of F35B capabilities looking even more purposeful under damp dark grey clouds. The landings inc spray are enthralling to watch. 0:21 mega shot of a Low and controlled approach. They have proved to the US that this concept works for heavier loads and probably more fuel efficient landing too. Trialed recently with UK and US F35B TES squadrons just off the coast of San Diego in the Pacific Ocean. Question Ted and Nikos? Do both out aircraft carrier posses the Bedford Array visual landing aid? Not dissimilar too the PAPI lights at an airbase i presume. Been atound many years hasn't it. Magic Ted and Nikos, well worth a trip to RAF Marham, even in horrid weather, again! Well done 👏 ✔️. Ted, Claire Bear and Nikos. Watched 4 times already. Love F35B's, love Vertical ladings. The SRVL was originally designed for the SHAR, wondered how long until the F35 was given clearance for this, makes perfect sense.

Don’t think it was that many years ago that the RAF carried out their first SRVL on a carrier. For our viewers that don’t know ‘SHAR’ is a name for the Sea Harrier 🤙🏼

The main benefit I see with RVL, is that the landing area is subjected to less heat and for less time. I don't see too much forward relative speed as to generate enough lift to compensate for weight, but time will tell if it really works to return back with more fuel or ammo.

SRVL allows for a rolling landing with a significantly reduced approach speed and landing distance, requirements not necessary CATOBAR carriers. It would also mean reduced fuel consumption so perhaps some examples would be low fuel, CATOBAR U/S, no landing pads available. The F-35B can increase the landing payload capacity of a V/STOL aircraft, which can be restricted when it lands vertically. Ultimately a useful attribute and important style of landing

That is the lift fan door. Or as some British pilots call it the "Toilet seat". It opens up in order to suck air into the lift fan which helps it in the hover. The air then exits through the bottom.
