I remember being around 8 years old and a guy from the RAF recruitment visiting our school and telling us about the brand new Tornado and how when we were older we could fly this state of the art fighter/bomber. I fell in love with the Tornado and it was my dream then to fly it. Unfortunately my boyhood dream never became a reality but my love for this legendary aircraft goes on. What a servant it has been to the RAF, untouched by anything else in terms of low level bombing capability and a hard act to follow. I hope a couple are kept flight ready for air shows to come as it would be a terrible shame not to see this magnificent aircraft continue to take to the skies.

"Pride of Great Britain they were....Panavia Tornado GR-4 1974 -2019" Best not forget history. The MRCA (later Tornado) design team was led by Germany. This very successful European Programme was managed by Panavia which was based in Manching Germany. At the outset, Britain was a junior partner in the programme. Only later, after the departure of Canada and the Netherlands and following the reduction in projected orders from Germany did UK share the programme on a 40%/40%/20% with Germany and Italy. By that stage, the design had been frozen while under German leadership.

I worked in the 1995 river Rhine flood, where the Bundesluftwaffe took the chance to take an air reconaissance exercise and photograph the entire river, from lake Bodensee to its mouth in Rotterdam, several times each day to collect data for future flood protection. The Tornado reconassaince version did each photgraphic run in about 1½ hours. I don't think any of the latest fighter designs will be able to perform quite as well in such jobs. I wonder how wise it is to let got of a plane that had such special skills no competitor could match. But then I'm a vintage tech lover of sorts. Still, having seen the Tornados dash by "in anger" at low level, always on a wingtip as at that speed the river's bends were pretty tight turns, I couldn't help but be amazed by what these planes were capable of. No air show winners, but workhorses for the air forces. Outstanding performers at low level, much like the Buccaneer.

I'm gonna fly in the face of common opinion here. I like the F-35. Sure it looks a little odd at times, but as a piece of engineering, it's very interesting......stunning to behold at times. I'm really going to miss 'the mighty fin', having memories of them all the way through my life, from sitting in them at various airshows during my childhood (Halton is missed greatly!), to seeing the swept fury as they tore up the skies over England. Seeing them in the loop will stay with me forever. But, time and technology never stand still. Retire her at the top, don't keep her in the fleet to watch her fail due to age. Cherish the memories, embrace the new.

That's how the avionics work -- the pilot pulls back, and the aircraft deflects surfaces until the inertial sensors detect the desired movement requested by the pilot. The pilot doesn't fly the F35 as much as he tells it what he wants out of it. The avionics will then use any / all surfaces to achieve the desired movement. This is why F22 / F35 don't have speed brakes -- the control surfaces can deflect in opposing actions resulting in aerodynamic drag. Things like 1 rudder turning left and the other turning right -- increases drag (speed brake) but doesn't produce directional changes.

I was at the 2015 Marham F&F Day and witnessed close up three-ship Tornado launches that day - it's quite something and reminded me of the USAF doing a two squadron launch of F-100 Super Sabres out of Lakenheath back in the 1960s. As for the F-35? The latest generation of high-tech fighters have just one fatal flaw - maintenance. At Marham in 2015 they bought in a Typhoon II and it went tech. I saw an engineer sitting by the nose wheel with the manuals (paper!) trying to figure out what was wrong. If they can keep the F-35 flying it will be awesome, if they can't it's just a very expensive piece of junk.

Western fighters are designed to keep the nose high after touchdown to bleed speed (whereas others use drogue chutes). The tornado with its thrust reversers is unique in that regard -- but they add weight. They're also extremely difficult to make low observable due to the metals they're made out of, and increase the complexity / part count of the aircraft. Such parts on aircraft are done in times of war where all airstrips are taken out. Roads will have to become air strips. This is why as the 2030s come around, I think we'll see substantial orders placed for the F35b variant as planners become cognizant of just how capable the F35 is, and the ability to hide F35b variants damn near anywhere. F35s are built to carry the B61 nuclear bomb -- that makes a stealth nuke bomber able to be hidden just about anywhere. I live in the middle of rural America in the foot hills of the Appalachian mountains and the road in front of my house is just long and straight enough for an F35b to use. I expect most F35 customers to end up purchasing B units for contingency planning.

Maybe, but if the tornado had a problem with an engine, it could afford to shut it down and get home on one, a fine quality in any combat aircraft, especially ones operating from carriers, even more so given the price tag of an engine failure on an F-35. Also if you want to talk raw power, I would recommend watching a 'vertical' take off of the English Electric Lighting and the power of the Avon engine. Nothing to do with changing times, more to do with marketing and trying to do more with less, even if it ends up costing more. The F-35 program, full of promises and potentially great in practice reminds of the situation with the phantom prior to going to war, designed with the view that technology (via missiles) would win a fight and therefore not need a gun. Only trouble was nobody told the enemy combatants that they were beaten by technology, and they forced the phantoms into one sided gun fights. Of course the phantoms were retrofitted with gun pods after a while as stop gap measure. But it is a reminder that technology is very fallible, and the human mind can be very inventive in circumventing it. I admit to not liking the the F-35 for a lot of reasons, cost, single engine in a complex airframe, cost, complexity vs serviceability, survivability. I could go on. It has a lot of promise on paper, I have my doubts they will pan out. But for the sake of the nations who have, and any that consider to purchase it, I do hope it fulfils the promises made by the salesman. Personally, give me (in no particular order) a Tornado (GR1,4 and F3, Harrier and Buccaneer, and I would put money you would get task completion, better survivability (less with the Harrier , but it can viff in combat) and pocket change - for the cost of one of these vending machines. So ..... um, yea...

Sigh, do you really not know anything? Lightning has same power as a Tornado... The F35 has more RAW power than the English Lightning/Tornado AND the Eurofighter TYPHOON... And you may wish to actually look at the combat record of the Phantom and its supposed need for a "gun" and not post tripe myths bantered about on the net. Tech since then has simply made a "GUN" an absolute joke. And genius, you do realize almost 100% of all WWII fighters were single engine with piss poor reliability and 100% of carrier aircraft were single engine until post WWII... And the F35 engines reliability is an order of magnitude more reliable compared to those pieces of junk. So..... um, yea.... Keep posting your ignorance. @@mogzybuster

I always see the term cost thrown around as well. Yes, the F-35 is the most expensive defense project of all time, and well over budget, however this aircraft is (unlike the F-22) for sale to other NATO members. It's intended purpose is the deliver the air superiority of the F-22 in a slightly less superior package. Which is what Russia does with many of their defense projects. Unlike the F-22 the US is expected to make some of the R&D expenditure back in sales. The next thing you mention is serviceability. The US has only manufactured the F-35 in "small" numbers so far, basically the first units to be put in service, and they have already produced 350 to the Phantoms 900. Many of these planes are not even old enough for major part replacements, hence there are not even production lines for the parts these require. Higher serviceability is expected for every new aircraft, including the Phantoms when they were first produced. The reason I mention the number produced above is because the F-35 is intended to be a strike craft with a higher diversity in combat roles, which they can sell to countries that _can not_ afford to produce a stealth aircraft that sophisticated. For example Australia can't afford the R&D for a homegrown fighter program of any capacity, but they have order around 70 F-35s for use in most combat roles they require. In theoretical terms NATO currently has access to produce thousands of vastly superior aircraft if a major war between superpowers were to occur. That is why the F-22 exists. Not because they needed such an aircraft in the war on terror, but because if war were to suddenly occur the US has already been a step ahead for a decade. If the likely case occurs, and World War 3 doesn't happen the F-35 will be an expensive show piece like the F-22 and the F-45 will be the next decades expense. So.... um, yeah.... the older aircraft are battle tested and popular because we used to have a war to battle in and the new and vastly superior aircraft seem pointless by an ignorant comparison because they aren't battle tested and even if they were they killed their targets from 200 kilometers away and it was an anticlimax.

@@w8stral Well ok then, so you completely missed the the point, while you keep muttering on about raw power, I was talking about survivability. I used to work on both the Tornado F3 and the Buccaneer, unfortunately never the harrier, but to clarify my point a little better for the hard of reading, aircraft aborting mission and rtb'ing with an engine problem and returning on a single engine with what was classed as emergency state 2 was fairly frequent, up to a couple of times a week on occasion. Now that may sound a lot but it is a small percentage given the amount of flying done. So here's the point you missed or ignored, how many times can an F35 afford to shut down an engine and expect to rtb? There are plenty of examples of single engine fighter out there today, but none, to my knowledge, and please feel free to enlighten me oh wise one, none to my knowledge that are designed to be three aircraft in one airframe with a price tag that would make Harrods blush, with the exception of course of the F35, great if you don't have an engine problem. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not against single engine aircraft, one of the best (IMO) post war aircraft designs to date, versatile, adaptive, cost effective and even good looking is the F-16, but guess what it's (relatively) cheap, to purchase and as important to maintain over its service life. And the F35? Still sighing? Exampling wwII aircraft as a counter argument is misleading and completely irrelevant. fighters were for the most part single engine because of a power to weight depreciation in performance and maneuverability. Let alone the fact that then, a/c rolled of the production line in the hundreds per month and operational life expectancy (for the aircraft) was measured in weeks not years. Of course carrier aircraft in wwII being single engine had nothing to with what I just mentioned or to do with the size of available carriers, or the take off requirements of a multi engine aircraft, compared to carrier size (think B-25). Point being, what was the case, because it had to be, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea today, fighters don't have to be single engine today do they. Regarding Phantoms, they had an illustrious career, once the kinks got ironed out both in equipment and operating tactics. what I said was correct and did happen as an example read this from the smithsonian (www.airspacemag.com/military-aviation/what-couldnt-f-4-phantom-do-180953944/) and tell me that the comments of the phantom drivers are tripe myths, also if so why was the Top Gun program developed, the arguement for a gun, is for a defensive weapon not primarily as an attacking one, as such. But again you missed or ignored the point, the point was a reference to blind reliance on technology winning the fight and always underestimating the ingenuity of the inferior human brain, as was the experience of the first phantoms in vietnam. But of course, as you say, I know nothing. Twist or ignore the points as you see fit, I remain content in my ignorance of both fact and first hand knowledge, all without laying claim to knowing yours, have a nice day.
