Hotel California is a commentary on the dark, wild and shallow lifestyle of California’s celebrity scene. Glitz and glamor. Constant parties. Drugs and alcohol. Insincere friends. Etc. Easy to get drawn in. But hard to get back out.

Not only that, the song is really an ode to the 60's; a generation lost in space (Don Mclean), and of hippies that ended with a whimper. It was in the lyrics "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969". What happened in 1969? Three things: 1. Woodstock in August 15-18 1969. 2. Murder of Sharon Tate and company by the Manson Family Aug 8, 1969, and 3. Death of Meredith Hunter during the Altamont Free Concert in Dec 6, 1969. A very bad way to end a decade of rebellion and so called free expression.

The Eagles have been contradictory in their explanation of what the song is about. It is about excess specifically Alcohol and drugs. “ Mirrors on the ceiling, the Pink Champagne on Ice” is a direct reference to the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California. it’s one of the strangest Hotels in the world. “I had to find my way back to the place I was before.” That’s a direct reference to the Winchester Mystery House outside Santa Barbara. I’m sure about the previous. When they refer to the “Night Watchman” I think is a reference to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. Lastly, what the song is about is Napa State Hospital in Napa, California. It is notorious for having Criminally Insane people. “You can check in anytime you like but you can never leave.” All these places are in the same general places along the 101,and 1 in California. The Eagles one time did disclose Napa State Hospital, but this is obviously a trip they took in California and seeing some infamous places.

The Eagles said it's "Hotel California" was because everyone who wanted to make it big was leaving their hometown for California. So California was filled with tons of people from out of state, just like a hotel. But the dream of trying to make it big is a trap! It's a life filled with drugs, alcohol, and excess. It looks glamorous but it is dangerous. It is hard to leave it even if you want to. You could say the song is also solely about addiction. I love your interpretation that it's about love. You're right that you can check out of love but it still traps you. That's the beauty of this song. It's mysterious and can mean a lot of different things. The line "they stabbed him with their steely knives" is a nod to the band Steely Dan who was famous for writing intricate, ambiguous lyrics. This was the Eagles attempting to tell an ambiguous story like them.

Don Henley, is an amazing vocalist, and one of a rare class of musicians who (Phil Collins is another) who are singers and drummers. The idea behind the song is a commentary on the excesses of California lifestyles in the 60's and 70's and the loss of the idealism of the hippie movement. It speaks about drugs and addiction, "You can check out (get high) but you can never leave" it's also about how seductive these things are while being dangerous. Also "Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air" is a weed reference. As in he was smoking while driving then came upon the hotel where he meets these strange people and these strange things happen to him. People have interpreted the lyrics to imply that the narrator dies while driving and that the hotel is like purgatory a place between heaven and hell. From everything I've read, the Eagles themselves, have stayed intentionally cryptic on the meaning as they seem to enjoy the debate. But the fact that the song is about excessive lifestyles and drug use is true. If you like Don Henley (Singer and drummer) You'd likely love his songs "Boys of summer" and "Dirty Laundry" Nice reaction guys.

I grew up with this music. It's great seeing young people like you enjoying it so much. Pure musical talent and perfection on display as was always the case with The Eagles. What is this song about? My interpretation is that it is about the hedonism and moral swamp that was the California (the Hotel) that they experienced in the glitzy world of the rich and famous. But it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It wasn't healthy, it wasn't good, so ... "Next thing I remember, I was running for the door. I tried to find a passage back to the place I was before". The whole scene in that morally bankrupt and hedonistic world leaves a mark on you forever. "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." No, you don't forget the damage you did to yourself, that you did to others, and that others did to you. And that is why you can leave that scene, but it sticks with you forever. Again, I enjoyed watching you two enjoy this incredible music by the best of the best. Big thumbs up!

Hotel California was a shining example of the combined songwriting prowess of the entire band. Don Felder, the guitarist on the double-neck, wrote that winding, mysterious guitar chord progression borrowing heavily from elements of flamenco and reggae, which is why it sounds Spanish and Jamaican at the same time. Don Henley (singer, drums) & Glenn Frey (acoustic 12-string guitar) wrote the lyrics, & Joe Walsh helped write that guitar duet at the end. Randy Meisner, while not the most well-known Eagle, is important because his voice can hit the high melody even while he plays bass.

During that time Cali was such a beautiful arts scene with a lot of things happening. Big city lights, famous people, drugs. It was heaven. Or was it hell? It was also a trap. With along with the flashy lifestyle comes drug addiction, lonesomeness, working to exhaustion, heartbreak, etc.

The Hotel California is a metaphor for the loss of innocence that most people experience at some point during their lives. This song isn't a literal story about any real particular place. Allegedly Hotel California was a nickname for a mental hospital / rehab center for Hollywood celebrities who couldn't say where they were going so they were just "vacationing at Hotel California". Metaphorically it means the dark side of fame, destructive nature of rock n' roll lifestyle. Too much money, corruption, greed, sex, drugs and arrogance; too little humility and heart. React to Boys of Summer, it was the drummer Don Henley's solo hit in 1984.
@squidkid23 жыл бұрын
It's about California the place. The Hotel is just a metaphor. If you've ever lived in California you'll know what the song is about. It's about the seductive lure of the place and how it sucks you in and always stays in your mind even after you leave. I lived there (in LA) for 30 years starting in '73 and it was like a fantasy. It was real in some ways but in others it was like a dream. I guess it helps to have lived there to truly understand what this song is about.

I don't know if anyone has ever described I Can't Tell You Why as a banger but it is a great song! One of the few time they let Timothy B Schmit sing lead.

Hey guys love your reaction. I think the song is about drug addiction. Once your in you can never leave. Also the passage "when they stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast" - I can literally see how they draw lines of cocaine on a glass table with that knives.😯 But it is just one interpretation. All best from Germany PS: it is weird that the tone of this video is not the one from the original live version but from the studio Version. The live version is even better, so this is a pity.

This band is notorious for many reasons, their antics out on the road are well known. They’re also known for intense fighting amongst themselves. In fact they broke up from 1979 - 1994 because of their fighting.

The guitarist in the red bandanna is the one and only Joe Walsh. He played in the James Gang before joining the Eagles and went on to have a successful solo career before rejoining the Eagles later. He was originally considered to be in the Eagles from the start but was thought to be to wild and crazy to deal with.

Give them a break, dude. It’s not a crime to be ill-educated. I’ve seen enough of their reactions to not only find them very genuine and adorable, but more importantly to realise that they’re genuinely open to any and all cultural influences, not matter from where they come. I’d rather spend time with a lovely young couple like this - open and accepting of the world around them - than any number of jaded ‘intellectuals’ who try to gatekeep what people should think or what they should like/dislike. It's just a joy to see them finding enjoyment in things.

@Jeronomp Yes. That was part of the point.

One of the greatest songs ever written. This song is the epitome of poetic metaphor, it means everything you think it means, while meaning something totally different to someone else. There's no one definition. There's no right or wrong answer. Simply put, where this song takes you, that's what it means.

I saw them live in 1995. If I had a bucket list at the time it would have been at the top at no time did I not watch in awe of one of the greatest bands of all time put on an unbelievable show.

Wow! It brings a tear to my eye and gives me chills watching young people totally digging this. To me, the most important line is ‘we’re all just prisoners here... of our own device’! Any situation can be a prison (of the mind) if you let. “Please bring me my wine”

When Don Felder wrote the guitar links to this song, he was planning to record it in Em, and he wanted to call it Mexican Reggae. When they realized Don Henley's voice was not suited to Em, they did it in Bm, and Frey and Henley came up with the lyrics of Welcome to the Hotel California. Read Henley's comments where he says, - it's just a song. It can be about anything you want it to be about. Later he said it was pertaining to the dark underbelly of success and excess
