Eric, That’s some awesome testing you did. I would love to see how the brodix 270 would do with a camshaft suited better for the exhaust flow deficiency. Would it make a drastic difference on the top end for that head? Anyway… much appreciate your time and thorough testing.,

Say Eric, i would wonder what would happen if you were to raise the ovel ports up to the top of the square ports? As it appears that you could do that without to much trouble, and then you would effectively have a significantly higher port. It would then just need maybe only spacers, but preferred a new intake manifold.

Correct me if I’m wrong, the promaxx 290 heads have 290 cc runners and the afr 265 have 265 cc runners? Well then in my eyes the 265 is the little head that could. I know a guy who has a set and says the throttle response is amazing.

The AFRs while not cheap seem to hold their own quite well even with the limited upper flow. the Lift at .200 they kick butt right in the sweet spot of initial chamber filling

AFR 265 is a CNC head, ProMaxx and FloTek 290 are as cast, do a little work on the as cast heads and correct the seat to combustion chamber blend and the FloTek / ProMaxx has easy gains in low to mid lift numbers.

So i really like how you are proving people wrong but let's face it we can have a million different theories on what heads do what but it's all up to mr dyno

Basic conclusion is Brodix RR heads are not competitive, my experience is BB2 Plus is similar not competitive when compared to rectangle ProMaxx 317/FloTek 315. Brodix makes some good race heads on the higher end, but their street level heads need a re-design.
@musclebone7875
@musclebone7875 Жыл бұрын
Brodix RR heads are good heads they just aren't the best of course. The stock exhaust location really hurts the flow, but I'd use them for a street build. I'd only buy a high dollar cylinder head if I was drag racing looking for max hp builds.
@donavan2676
@donavan2676 Жыл бұрын
@@musclebone7875 I am not following your comment, the Brodix RR 270 is more expensive then the FloTek 290 (same head as ProMaxx 290), 20% more expensive, and makes less power. Basically the Brodix street heads are not competitive, and priced too high for what they offer. Brodix 294 Rectangle was even more embarrassing in this testing if you look through Eric's book. I don't install Brodix BB2, or RR heads on a customers engine as I consider it a disservice to mislead them on power and value. 396 is the only case I see for the BBC Brodix RR or Edelbrock Performer RPM heads as the small valve size will fit in the cylinders. On the newer designed heads Brodix heads are nice, we use the SR20's from time to time on hotter street or bracket race engines 582 to 632 cu in.

Hi Eric I bought your book from these test. Let me say I’m a Brodix fan. So a lower flowing head with lower CR 10.6:1 made same power to 4600rpm. Could that increase in HP for AFR heads be the 1/2 of CR point showing up in HP? Looking forward to your test with the world Merlin 540cid. I have a Dart bigM with Cali’s bottom end. I’m locked in to stock valve geometry do to the Jesel stands I bought for my cast 990 heads. So BB2 or Dragon Slayer 320. My question is, Do you know of any other aluminum heads that have same valve geometry as stock 990 heads? My CR is 10.8:1 with 23cc domes in 119cc chamber with the piston -.005 in hole with .045 head gasket. Would you run the 110cc chambers or the 115 Dragon slayer? And would you go to a bigger intake valve 2.3” or not worth the money and time for gain. Cause Brodix might have numbers for that. What does it mean to roll a as cast head? Does it add any flow??
@ekitching
@ekitching Жыл бұрын
Good video Eric, thanks for taking the time to test these heads both on a flow bench and on the dyno. Looks like Promaxx is the bang for your buck head. I wonder if a CNC chamber would have helped the Brodix. Also just to say it again, the Brodix RR series has the exhaust port in the stock location, hurting power, but less headaches when installing them on your car. You can supposedly cam this out with more duration on the exhaust.

I have a set of AFR 265s on my 462ci with approx 10.4:1 CR. My camshaft and intake manifold aren't optimal, but I am still hoping that it will make at least 500 HP. After seeing this test, I am still glad that I didn't buy the Brodix 270s.

Do you think the throttle response with the AFR 265 would be better on the street or do you think it would be basically the same or is very similar to the pro max? I mean you’re saving people a lot of money I remember all of that magazine ads I think me and you were pretty close to the same age and I used to read all the same stuff and the AFR’s won every single test ever created in any magazine lol I mean I really see no reason to buy those over the promax , what I would like to see is the AFR 290 or 300 oval vs the promax 290! And the only thing that I would’ve change that engine is may be a bigger camshaft thanks for all the testing that you have been doing I know I really appreciate it !!!

It is my understanding that Brodix developed the HV2016 & HV2017 for larger Motors AND, flat hoods, that's why it's a very low intake. Please correct me if I'm wrong. And Happy Father's day to all.

Hi Eric. Tom Mohan here. I would like to plant a seed in your mind to get you curious in doing a segment on the testing of dynamic valve seat runout. Something I have always wonderd. But never had the resources to test. But with access to a dyno and your machines and resources. I believe you can. It would fit right in with your head teaching and testing criteria. Explanation: ....... We machine seats and valves as perfect as possible to reduce runout. However, like flowing an exhaust port. Our means of measuring its sealing potential are no good. "Seat concentricity gauge at room tempurature? A vaccume test at room temperature? What about this..... What happens to the seat and valve head at running temperature? What happens to the guide centerline? Especially exh guide and valve cold on one half. Exposed to 1200 deg on the other half and so on. Valve head cycling harmonics, stem flexing? Like pushrods. All kinds of shit going on. At what point does minimum seat runout no longer retain relevents and is there power in machining valve seats and valves at an elevated temperature. I have never seen this explored and I believe you are the man to do it. It is now your destiny as I have just shared it with many. To investigate for us. Careful before you answer it will pull in and seal anyway. Thats likely true. But what about valve head flex? Reliabillity in not popping off a flexing valve head and other possible dynamics. Maybe zero runout at room temp is Just horrible in a running engine and we should run hot coolant through the head during re-cutting seats? 🤔 Thank you in advance. I will understand if you block me after asking this. Sorry! 😊

Ever think of anodizing the insides of an intake? Crazy questions usually leads to ideas. Also look at the finishes on the AR-15.

Do you realize how ridiculous this comment is? First, this is only a 496, and if you go putting some 450 cfm head on it, you aren't going to benefit anything. And if you just want to talk heads and flow numbers, Brodix has heads that will eat any AFR. And I can't think of any aftermarket CNC head/intake company using AFR casting over a Brodix or Profiler.
