I would love a performance model that came with wheel covers that you could remove for most everyday driving and then add for trips. And I love the current Wheels. The performance has, just a wheel cover. You could put over it and then gain a tremendous range.

Good job on the video, but why charge to 100% at a supercharger? I know you went in to eat and had the time, but you don't have to do that, plus it's really hard on the battery. Were there no super chargers up in New Hampshire? You might explain that a little more in future videos and take viewers through the whole thought process on charging for the entire trip. I love the new model 3 and it's great to see somebody take off the 20" wheels and install the 18's on a performance model!! Major kudos for that!! Looks to me like the performance will do just as well as the other long range models when equipped with the same wheels. Subscribed!

Great video! This definitely confirms the efficiency I was getting with the Hankook iON EVO AS tires. I did 315 miles without stopping at all and had 8% battery left. That was at 220 wh/mi average. Just a couple of things to note. The actually usable capacity of the battery before the buffer is 78.6 kWh and not 80 kWh. Not a big difference but you probably wouldn’t be able to actually go more than 360 miles on a single charge. Also, the Aero wheels do make a difference but almost all of the benefit is from the Ultra Efficient Hankook tires especially at lower speeds. I have open air wheels and I got slightly better efficiency at the same speeds. Your wheels would start to really shine at 80+ mph.
@davewhitegt
@davewhitegt Ай бұрын
Let me start by saying watching your vids got me started on this journey 🙌🏼. You were super helpful with answering all my questions.Thank you for all the info. My bad on the battery pack. I googled it and it said 82 kWh so I just figured 80 would be a safe number figuring they had at least a 1kWh buffer past zero percent, but thank you for the correction. I was factoring the tail end of the journey from the last charge where I went 207 mile and only used 44 kWh @ 212 Wh/mi so even factoring that at 78.6 kWh pack should put it over 360 miles range from one charge to zero unless I’m not calculating things correctly. Next step is to get another draggy and put this thing in the 10s.
@LearningFast

@@davewhitegt definitely get the dragy and try it at the track. Car is so quick you can easily get a ticket or worse doing pulls on the street. Your efficiency is really good. I bet those wheels would really shine out west where they have 80+ mph speed limits.

@@keizersoze907 I was just comparing it to my lexus es which gets around 25 mph if I’m lucky. But I can re calculate it to 34 mpg. This brings up a good question though. I wonder what the average mpg amongst all ICE cars on the road today. Again I didn’t buy the car for the fuel savings, just happens to be an added benefit. Just did some quick math and the Tesla still comes out on top. 725 miles at 34 mpg = $69 and was still only $53 for the Tesla. Obviously not as much of a savings, but you have to remember this is the only time I’ve charged at a supercharger. That’s $.39 cents per kWh, charging at home I only pay $.16 cents per kWh (less than 1/2). And some people have programs that pay $.09 cents per kWh. Hey there, great vid, just a FYI the useable kWh in any tesla model 3 perf from 2022 onwards is 78 kWh, there's a buffer for various things and also the FULL capacity always depends on the temp and weather outside as even on two identical days the battery will have different capacities. Also a quick and accurate way to get mi/kwh is to divide 1 by adding a decimal to the wh/mi for ex from your vid it would be 1/.227 which is around 4.405 mi/kwh and multiplied by 78 its around 343 miles! I personally have a '22 M3 Perf and this video might have convinced me to get aero wheels for road trips.
@davewhitegt
@davewhitegt Ай бұрын
Thank you for the info. I thought it was an 82 kWh pack and figured it would have a 1 or 2 kWh buffer to go past zero percent like on “Out of Spec” videos. That’s the only reason I was using 80 instead of 78. Wasn’t trying to deceive anyone 👍🏼. So is there a buffer past 78 kWh?
@davewhitegt
@davewhitegt Ай бұрын
I was also calculating off of the current drive for the last part of the trip. That was 207 mile from the last supercharger. That was 212 Wh/mi. I figured that would give a real going from a charger to zero number. The total trip number had two charges in it that would also consume some energy.
@ElectricGeek-i4f
@ElectricGeek-i4f Ай бұрын
@@davewhitegt It always depends per vehicle, the best place to learn about all this geeky/nerdy stuff is OutOfSpec Studios in my opinion. But short answer, yes you can go about 10-30 miles when it still says 0 because they dont want you to be stranded. I dont know the exact kWh buffer but anywhere between 1-2 kwh of driving buffer and not anything above that cause if you go too low in percentage your battery will just die and not be useable.
@ElectricGeek-i4f
@ElectricGeek-i4f Ай бұрын
@@davewhitegt Got it, makes sense. I was just saying to calc by adding a decimal to the front as its slightly more accurate in terms of the math because when using kwh you might have used for example 23.718 but it will only show 23 in the display whereas the wh/mi is more descriptive. So if it says for example like 235 wh/mi i would just divide 1 by 0.235 to get the mi/kwh.

I use Chill mode just because it’s a more comfortable driving experience for myself and the passengers not for the efficiency. On the highway I’m sure there’s zero efficient difference between chill and insane, but unless you have a very smooth foot, I would think there would have to be at least a minimal difference in town driving between the two. The auto lane shift is for safety purposes. If you go at the speed limit, it will keep you at the right lane until vehicles start merging from the on ramp. Did you buy or lease the car ? In the UK depreciation is really bad for EV's. I lost a lot in two years and got out while my car still had value in it and leasing would have cost me more. Other considerations are insurance costs on new EV's as here in the UK £1000 a year for a Tesla on average or £350 for a similar size petrol car. My mid size (Golf size car) 1.5 petrol / gas car does 40 mpg city and over 50 mpg motorway / highway. Electricity is £0.75 per kw at public chargers so here 725 miles at 4 miles per kw efficiency would cost £136 (£15 using house / home electricity for 200 miles and then £98 at public chargers making it £113) and in petrol / gas in my car £92 for the same journey.

Insurance this side of the pond is more expensive but I don’t have the statistics on how much the difference would be. I didn’t buy the car for fuel savings, it just happens to be one of the added benefits of it here in America. My home utilities are $14.2 cents/ kWh and regular gas is an average of $3.25/gallon. Our superchargers are (from what I’ve seen) $.30cents-$.39 cents/kWh. @@Marvelofebikes I need to start getting used to using the energy app that’s in the ui. It automatically just gives a canned number of 313 miles of range as a canned number with the 18 inch aero wheels. That’s why it’s better to go by SOC calculations. And the range predictions in the navigation screen are very different. Those calculations are complex and account for many real world factors.

Beautiful quads btw!! You can update your Tesla Model 3 Performance to reflect the change in tire size: Access the Service Menu, tap on Controls > Service > Update Wheel Configuration, select your tire size, restart vehicle. Make sure the 18 inch wheels are Tesla approved to avoid any potential issues with performance or warranty.

Good video, but no, you don't do it correctly. You consider the EPA number in the UI (96% = 301 miles, 17% = 53 miles) and then try to add this number to the real distance you drove. That's not how it works. You should have used the Energy app in your car and lookup the remaining range based on the last 5, 15, 30 miles driven (in the consumption panel). That would have given you the real range based on the driving conditions you had.

I don’t think that’s what he did. I thought he multiplied what was left by what he was averaging and added that to the miles driven. Either way, it looks like on road trips this thing can get some serious distance if needed.

According to your rough calculation, you'll save $5000 using electric over fuel driven 100,000 miles. That doesn't calculate for battery degradation, fuel cost fluctuation and electricity price increases. I'll stick with hybrids for the cost savings.
@davewhitegt
@davewhitegt Ай бұрын
@@HardyHempstead I initially didn’t look at this car for the cost savings. It just checked all the boxes that was looking for (fairly quick, zero to sixty 2.9 seconds, super quiet, adaptive suspension, comfortable). The perfect daily driver for me. It just happens that it’s efficient at the same time. Not sure how you came up with your numbers, but this is what I came up with. This video is only one long road trip of which I rarely do. I just put the 18 inch wheels on the day before this trip. I charge at home @ $.16 cents/kWh as opposed to superchargers which (in this video) are $.39 cents/kWh which I’ve never used up till this point and will hardly ever use. On the low end 227 Wh/mi = 4.4 miles/kWh 100,000 miles / 4.4 = 22,727 kWh of energy 22,727 x $.16 = $3,636 100,000 miles in a gas car at 25 MPG 100,000 miles / 25 = 4,000 gallons of fuel 4,000 x $3.25/gallon = $13,000 That’s $9,364 in saving over an ICE car over 100k miles. And this amount will grow even larger with the more local driving I do which is most of my driving. Glad you enjoy your hybrid, I actually really like what they did with the new Prius. Personally can’t stand the drone of the CVT, that was the deal breaker for me. Not to mention I’m addicted to the instant torque now. The way the two cars drive is completely different.
