I’m so glad you brought this up. I thought you might be discussing training-camp like spurts but this is equally as interesting because many ultras are mtn trails and time -on-feet is usually disproportionate to distance covered. Thanks for reinforcing what I do.

I just ran 100k week max. The next week was cut down 55k. My previous high was 80k. I feel really good no pains or aches. After some: one or two rest weeks I will focus on speed to run sub 3;30 marathon this fall. Thank you for this explanation. This might work as long as I go back to my standard 60k to 70 k weeks.

If people want to go mad running 100k a week that's up to them. But I smashed my sub-20 5K running less than 45K a week and staying injury free.

Sub 3 hour 70+ year old runner Gene Dykes says he runs a slow trail 50k in his road marathon prep. Does this fall into that as well? I am interested in trying this. Was wondering about the number of easy days following something like that. Thanks!

I'd be cautious about this because it's a big injury risk. Even elite marathoners usually don't run more than 24-25 miles during training (but that takes far less time than for us mere mortals). You can get your fitness from long runs at 3:30 or less time.

One question? How do would you go about adjusting your training after such a week. Obviously this is highly individual? But maybe a few more rest days the next week etc ? Or just take a down week? I suppose the answer is maybe it depends ? 😅

Depending on how many miles u run per week and the intensity of those miles, you could probably increase by 3 miles per week. If you are very young and can recover faster you might be able to get away with increasing by 5 miles in a week but anything over that is probably pushing the limits

I'd just budget 2-4 days very easy after an effort like this. "Easy" will look different for different people but a rest day + 2 very easy days sounds good to me!
