"Dead Rising 4" is an over-hated & under-rated action-packed survival horror game set in the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado, where players step into the shoes of Frank West, a photojournalist with a knack for uncovering the truth behind mysterious occurrences. My initial experience with the game was just awful, it was a buggy mess and kinda boring. Not even killing zombies was any near as entertaining or satisfying as Deadrising 3 at least to me.

Was it the PS4 version? I remember buying and playing the PS4 version when it first came out and it was a completely buggy mess. When I beat the game just once, it constantly crashed after every subsequent attempt to play. I couldn't even replay the game, Capcom heroes was literally unplayable. The clerk at the store I bought it from was even kind enough to swap it with another copy of the game, but even THAT didn't solve the issue. So my Dead Rising 4 disc spent years collecting dust on my shelf. Then one day I decided to pick it up and again and I guess the glitch was finally patched, so strange.

I could cry when thinking about Dead Rising. It was my very first game I put into the Xbox 360 when I got it for Christmas. I spent the entire year beforehand, reading Game Informer and anything I find to see Dead Rising 1. It was just so good. The freedom of running around the mall and killing zombies in any way you wanted and dressing up however way, was such a "next-gen" experience for my child brain. It was the easily one of my best Xbox 360 memories. I stayed up all night refreshing that ancient Xbox 360 dashboard on the day DR2's prequel dlc came out. I played that like 10 times over in anticipation for DR2. When that game came out, it was everything I could have ever imagined. I fucking LOVED DR2. I still don't think I've been in every shop/seen the whole game. The only thing that sucked was the weird MP mode no one played. When I look back on my best gaming memories, DR2 as a whole is always up there. DR3 came out and I didn't pre-order the Xbox One. I knew I would end up in that situation but at that point it was years since DR2 and I thought I could go a little while without needing to play it... I was wrong. It's not that the game was great, but my childhood love of the franchise instantly turned me into a crackhead who needed to get an Xbox and DR3. I achieved that goal within a few days, and I honestly loved DR3 as well. It definitely was a bit different. The game world seemed big but was ultimately pretty small. In hindsight, it definitely wasn't DR2 but retained enough Dead Rising DNA that I thoroughly enjoyed it many times over.. Now... Dead Rising fucking 4. This breaks my damn heart. I don't even know the origin story of when or how I got the game. All I know is I own it on Steam and have 5hrs played. Actually, I just took a break from this comment and checked, I did play it on an Xbox in Feb 2017 but only completed up to Case 2. After watching your very good video, I think I'm going to play Dead Rising 4 again. Just to see it through to the end. I owe to my childhood self who was truly blown away by this franchise. Hell, I love zombie games/movies because of Dead Rising. It is just such a shame to hear all the cut-content and ideas that didn't make it. I like to think everyone has a video game franchise they really connected with and unconditionally love, and it's Dead Rising for me. It seems like Dead Rising 5 may never happen and even if it does, it will be from an entirely different group of developers. Maybe that is what it needs, fans of the original material but new people to take it forward. Maybe Dead Island 2 (that just got re-announced again for Feb 2023) will cause such a surge of zombie love, that Xbox or Capcom will take a look at DR5. Thanks to anyone who read all that. It's a bit much for a YT comment but it's been a while since I whined about Dead Rising. o7 to all the Dead Rising fans out there.

I just beat 1, 2, and am level 10 in 3. I'm going to sleep but I beat dead rising 1 probably close to or over 15 to 20 times. It's one of my all time favorite games and everything about it is just perfect. I played 5 mins of 4 whenever it came out and just never went back to it. For some reason - mid life crisis maybe - I'm just wanting to see all the old stuff I used to enjoy or never finished and dead rising is apart of that. I'm going to play it soon after I beat 3. That's a dumbass comparison. Nobody at launch saw "ah yes a new zombie game called dead rising, I want to specifically buy it cause it apparently has a timer of sorts, cant wait to pre order for that sole reason!" Removing the timer in dead rising is like removing the timer in early mario games. It's NOT the point, and all it does is take away a limiter to further expand your gameplay experience overall. If they had taken away the zombies THEN you can compare it to taking away the platforming wtf.

@@byronbarrientos8471 Wrong. Mario's gameplay loop is about getting from point A to point B. The platforming is what makes that difficult. Without the platforming it's a boring slog Dead Rising's gameplay loop is killing zombies. But the difficulty comes from the timer and planning out which missions you can and can't do before the timer runs out. Without the timer there is no difficulty and the game becomes a boring slog. Which is exactly what Dead Rising 4 was. Mario's timer has no impact on the gameplay because it's so ridiculously long it's usually not going to impact your playthrough. Dead Rising's by design is meant to make you feel like you don't have time to do everything

I last played this game several years ago when I got it. I had been putting up with a lot with the bs in the intro and then when it told me the clock was gone I got a little angry. Then I heard from someone the psychopaths in the game were shit which was honestly what i hoped would redeem the game and when I heard they were bad I gave up on it. If the game is enjoyable beyond the intro I might give it a chance again.

I think your point how it's trying so hard to appeal to a broader audience is why this game didn't end up appealing to a lot of existing Dead Rising fans (it doesn't help that they marketed it as "going back to their roots" despite doing the exact opposite of that). A lot of what makes Dead Rising unique was removed, and as a result it ends up just being another zombie killing game. Keep in mind that by 2016, the market was already saturated with those. I'm not surprised it sold poorly.

Cyberpunk isn't trash though, sure it was really buggy when it first dropped, but that's what happens when everyone decides to rush a game studio. After sometime it got fixed and it actually got playable.

The timer from the beginning should have been a optional thing that you turn on or off in gameplay settings. Keyword "options" something game dev's should have more of.

I agree, additionally, including a sandbox mode focused solely on disposing of zombies (no timer, no bosses, no survivors, no story) like Deadrising 2: Off the Record offered, would have been a great addition to the first and second game. They should have realized that their game was appealing to two different types of players: those who liked a challenge and enjoyed the feeling of mastering a game and those who just wanted to run around killing zombies for fun. The original games were heavily catered to the first type of player, alienating and frustrating the second type of player. The Deadrising series should have sold more and should have been more successful because the concept is actually pretty cool and unique… I suspect the series didn’t reach the level of success other franchises did due to catering to a specific type of player. Options on how to play a game are always greatly appreciated - just look at GTA’s success - options and giving the player a good sense of agency works. Of course, not every game can or should focus on player freedom but Deadrising would have been a more successful franchise if the developers would have given players more options/freedom on how to play their game.

Unfortunately that wouldn't work. The timer is intimately intertwined in every aspect of the first and second game. Having an option to add the timer to a game made without the timer in mind would just add an arbitrary time limit on the game as a whole, much like DR3.

They tried the timer to start with but realized that the game had so much content that the time they would have to give you would be meaningless so they took it out. It was in the dev interviews. I also miss the timer though, saving survivors as well as psychos with personalities. It added an extra layer of depth to the game.

I really enjoyed the game too but I couldn't disagree more with the psychopath take. It was just pure laziness on the developers. What's giving the maniacs a small cut scene would make it fun. They also are and have always been optional fights and they aren't that hard. What I enjoy is leveling up and taking them out at higher levels or when I find a powerful weapon.

I don’t like the notion that every game after DR2 aren’t accessible like DR4. Dead rising 2 and 3 have the best pacing, and 2 gives you access to three really easy combo weapons out the safe house and in 3s case the time limit isn’t even a factor unless you really dold off. 4 was just unsatisfying and does almost nothing new. And what it does have that works was done better in every game prior.

I've only played Dead Rising 1, Off the Record, 3, and 4, and I have to agree with most of your video. DR4 is fairly underrated and very enjoyable in its own right. For me personality, each Dead Rising game has felt like a natural progression from one to the next. Can't say there's a single one I dislike.

I've never liked short timers, the extremely fast passage of time, when one day passes in 15 minutes, it's hard to look at all locations during the passage. I saw a comment that in part 3 of Apocalypse Edition there is an option like “Untold Stories”, which makes it possible to explore the city without a limited time. This time can be spent collecting figurines, drawings and simply inspecting the interiors. It is convenient when there is a choice and it is not taken away, this way everyone gets what they want.

I recently got the game and it’s dlc and it’s refreshing seeing someone say it’s actually decent and not literally made by the devil. The game looks fun as hell and I hated the timer restraint. It does suck the human bosses aren’t that fleshed out but man am I just happy to have a chill zombie killing game with fun weapons I can just relax with. I’ve actually played 3 and liked it enough but the stuff 4 does for the “casual” audience is so refreshing. The expanded inventory, the easier crafting. Hell the be the zombie dlc is fun enough.

The honest truth is that this game was absolutely over-hated. While everyone is entitled to their opinions, some people are hyper focused on the faults. I’ve played games that were far more plagued with issues than this game and still received the praise. The timer in the original dead rising, in my opinion, held the game back from being better . I couldn’t really build depth or love for the game because there was just no time to take it in and enjoy much of anything due to being under their time constraints. Dead rising 4 is a breath of fresh air because it removes that, allowing this game to feel more of a sandbox. There’s more to say but, chill out people, stop taking yourselves and this game to seriously and just enjoy it or move on.

IMO the original Deadrising and Deadrising 2 were meant for a very specific type of player. If you weren’t that type of player, the game felt incredibly outdated, difficult, and repetitive… I was the second type of player. The main appeal of the series for me was never the timer, leveling up, the bosses (although the boss backstories were interesting), the clunkiness, the manual save system, etc… the main appeal to me was always the concept of being in a mall and being able to use any object to dispose of zombies - I wasn’t looking for anything else. Because of all of that, Deadrising 4, although hated by fans of the original, was actually my favorite of the series. It was all about giving the player the freedom that I wanted the original games to have.

Me too :/ i love the series tho so im pushing through and it truly is getting better, feels smooth. Main issues to me are decreased blood/gore, clunky mechanics (ex. spazzing 30 feet in the air if i drive over a leg, enemies having heat sinking ammo), boring bosses (I remember the diner/wheelchair chick from DR3 like it was yesterday, they used to be memorable, like the zombie motorcycle game show from DR2; theyre not at ALL memorable or enjoyable in DR4), FOV limitation (playing on PC, so im unsure if thats why, but the camera is so close to frank, i get sick and frustrated moving around), lighting indoors / night vision is very annoying (limited to crouch speed and limited functions due to camera being out), scrap not having any magnetization is super frustrating, no ability to increase game difficulty after starting, boring quests, INSANELY confusing intro to the story. With that being said, the game isnt supposed to be taken seriously (i.e. exo suits within an hour or two of playing). I love how easily you can lose track of 30 minutes killing thousands of zombies even without progressing the story at all. Its like an arcade game that you can just hop in and relax with with obviously a couple more advanced features than tetris for example lmao. If i had to change 1 thing: more personal/memorable characters like the psychopaths.. i mean “maniacs”.. 😂

He and chuck always look like they’re pissed off at everything, and Nick just always looks scared. So his new face can show his emotions and facial expressions better

Loved this game but now it crashes everytime I click “new game” not a second of gameplay can be played. A fix for this would be good but that ain’t ever going to happen now.

This is my favourite Dead Rising game… the clock being gone is my main reason for it. I hated it in the other games. This is one of my ultimate guilty pleasure games.

I really like your take on it, and respect it. I don't necessarily agree on the idea on appealing to a more casual audience because it splits the fan base. There will be plenty of the fans who'll enjoy the new take, and plenty who wont. Its a risky gamble, because if the new audience doesnt replace the ones they lost you kill the franchise. Its happened to a lot of franchises before. I myself didnt hate Dead Rising 4 but i just didnt enjoy myself because it felt like it was sensory overload. But again i really appreciate your take on this review instead of blindly supporting or trashing the game, keep it up!

Imho, and pun very much intended, Dead Rising 4 just had no soul. It didn't have the charm or the desperate feeling that the first three games (and the spin-off, Case West) had. It didn't urge the player to actually consider strategies when traipsing the map keeping note of shortcuts and vehicles, to keep track of and manage items, resources and spawns, to trigger and prioritize missions according to the time left for every objective. The game was just Dynasty Warriors but with zombies. It's fun in that regard, but it's just not memorable for a Dead Rising game. Even the no time limit Infinity Modes had a goal; to survive as long as possible, and your enemies there were usually the very same survivors and psychopaths you grew attached to or killed off mercilessly in the main modes. DR4 just throws you into a sandbox and tells you "just do whatever" lol seriously if i wanted to feel like a god, I'd go and play The Sims.

This is the Dead Rising game for casuals/Newbies who don’t know what Dead Rising is or just are not good at playing a Dead Rising game. This is awful and deserves the oversaturated hate. From narrative to gameplay. Dead Rising 3 did everything Dead Rising 4 couldn’t. 3 had MORE customization and weapons than 4. Not to mention it didn’t have that stupid Christmas theme to it. This game is an absolute sin to the franchise and the exo suits don’t justify it because all of our original survivors (Real Frank, Chuck, and Nick) were so over the top they could just hop fire 50 cal machine guns with zero issues and yeet park benches over your house and into a crowd of zombies. And then you get to 3 where you’re building NUKES out of just a few parts in a computer store. But minus the better writing and the fun (and for a lot of people) challenging gameplay that all the previous titles had.. I say the true downfall of this game was trapping a phony Frank West inside a unrecognizable knock off of Willamette and drowning the player in an unbearable Christmas thematics AND the developers having the audacity to release this as a canon entry and prompting it as such a fun game when it should NEVER have existed in the first place. I’ve played it, I’ve beaten it, I’ve 100% completed it. And there is NO redemption to be found. If you like movies like “The Room” or “Birdemic: Shock and terror” then get this game along with “Ride to Hell Retribution” and “Escape Dead Island” because you either have an ironic love for poop media or the wrong opinions all together. Great video, sorry for the rant. This game hurt me worse than my active duty military contract and I want people to know from an OVERLY obsessed Dead Rising fanatic’s point of view... This game is just a hot mess. Play it at your own risk.

the clock made the dead rising games replayable, dr4 lets you take it easy sure but when you're done, you're just done with the game in addition to this, removing the clock was actually pointless and detrimental since the casual audience at the time was already done with zombie games, so all it did was further distance itself from the fans

man this game sucked so bad even gen Z developed a liking for its plain boring mechanics, of course you'd like an open world sandbox full of garbage minigames and buffed weapons. the point of the time limit was to not waste time around and get done with the game, uncover the conspiracy. survivors are supposed to be missable, OP weapons are supposed to be secrets or unlockables just to make the replayability easier. you used to have the joy of leveling up and unlocking unique skills until you get to be truly OP at level 50, and still, some of its mechanics used to present a challenge. dead rising was unique and 3/4 just served to streamline it and strip off the fun of a hard game that required you to learn and master its mechanics. enjoy your underrated game i guess, it's the last one we'll ever have.

My main issue with this game by far is how Frank was written. I was very indifferent on him in the first game but I enjoyed his character in Off The Record. In DR4, Frank is drastically different compared to how he is in the other games to the point where he shouldn't even be classified as the same character. They should've just made a new protagonist entirely.

I am honestly quite torn with which one to pick: DR3 or DR4. I got into DR1, loved and played the heck out of it and picked up DR2, but haven't put much time to it because of life and responsibilities. Looking back at those two games now, I remembered them fondly, but the two games really look dated for today's standards. I've been seeing nothing but hate on DR4, until I saw this video. Now it even got me more confused if I shouldn't or should pick up DR4 lol.

i got this a while back during a discount and forgot about it and 5 euro for a game usually never turns out top be good(if not 20 years old ha,ha).. But after i got through the 1st part i started to have alot of fun,...Really fun Story could have been better,But i work for this game and what it is. with the timer it's hard to say I think there should always be 2 modes but for the story too not just overtime mode so I am glad I finally got an endless story experience with DR4 while I think there should also be a classic timer mode in the game both can be fun, I agree there are some details missing that should be in the game, and the maniacs are disappointing compared to psychopaths, but people make it sound like this game is worthless when it is a fun time around the holidays especially of course. I can understand people not being able to forgive how they changed Frank, but I have to say story and characters was never very important to me in these games at all, so I just skip cutscenes and have fun. Some locations are very nice, I love the Carribean Cove also there is a gun that shoots live fish at people.

I played the series all the way through and Deadrising 4 is my favorite iteration. I couldn’t play 3 because I don’t have an XBox, but Deadrising 4 took out some of the frustrations I had when playing the other three (the third being “Deadrising 2: Off The Record”). There’s no time limit, there’s a bigger map that you actually have the means AND time to explore, crafting is more simple because you don’t need two specific items to make a weapon: just one specific item and an item that falls under a category. Gunfights are smoother, the leveling system allows for more freedom when improving Frank, the Exosuits are fun to use without being too OP, it rewrote the story, but if the gameplay is canon enough, Frank’s even more of a badass than in previous iterations. There’s a point to collectibles being in the game because you’re not racing against time. You don’t have to look up a damned walkthrough or play the game 27 times to actually save everyone. Deadrising 4 is actually one of my favorite games in all.

@@enriquealvarez6145to keep things civil, I don’t remember why I put it that way. And you are correct: they butchered Frank’s iconic character. I think the point I was trying to make was the gameplay going from feasible weaponry to more over-exaggerated and fantastical weaponry (which I myself thoroughly enjoyed) made Frank feel more badass. Don’t get me wrong, making a lightsaber out of jewelry and a flashlight is cool and unrealistic, but I was stunned when I figured out I could perch a garden gnome on top of any pole-like weapon and make a literal magic staff. I guess I was trying to make the point that if gameplay crossed over enough into canon (which it rarely does) the fact that Frank could do things like this was more “bad ass”.

Nah, the game is still ass. One of the things i LOVED of DeadRising 1 and 2 is that it doesn't expect you finish the game on your first playthrough! You can die or have a bad ending while conserve all your stats for the next playthru, it made you lose that sense of fear about time and give more to develop your tactics with the story and dealing with survivors. I liked DR3 but story wise was such a letdown at the end and also having access to every weapon that you interacted with in a non newgameplus mode jeopardized the game, as well as is hilariously short, it expects to complete it in one cycle and let it go. But still kinda fun, the Dylan, Diego and Albert were amazing fights! The others pretty much you could spam your trustful combo weapons of your choice and would be down in matter of seconds. My favorite parts were on the Xbox One version with the Kinect you could scream stuff to the psychopats to distract them, and the minigame was nuts too. DeadRising 4 takes out the thrill of the originals and even give you a major letdown with the story.

As a DEADRISING fan, I enjoyed playing through 4, but it's still the worst game in the franchise. My experience was having lots of fun trying out all the combo weapons, combo vehicles, and exo suit upgrades. But the story was lackluster with a good ending. I played from beginning to end without a single death(this was before they implemented higher difficulties). I believe people should play this franchise if they haven't already. Those who say the timer sucks are valid. However, i think they don't try to learn the system for a better experience. Hell, in EVERY game you can remove the timer and just play how you want.
