I graduated from high school with her. She was always talented, and was just starting to get the recognition she deserved when she tragically passed away. I saw her play at Blues Alley (where this was recorded) and she was incredible. A really shy, sweet lady who left us way too soon...

I knew her Aunt and Grandmother. I didn’t know about her until I was told about her passing. For days, a group of us played her Songbird CD nonstop that was given to us by her family. It was 1996. Harper’s Ferry.

From the very first time i heard this when it was played on the radio here in the UK back in '98 by a DJ called Terry Wogan up to just watching your reaction, i cannot listen to it without being in tears, when she hits that high note it's just undescribable, it was written by Harold Arlen and was sung by Judy Garland but it was owned by Eva Cassidy, RIP voice of an angel

When this was filmed (I think by a friend in the audience), she already knew she had melanoma and only months to live. And perhaps it was her struggling (at the end) to fight back her tears. She was one in a million. She'd been offered several record deals and turned them down because they wanted her to be the artist THEY wanted her to be. She had said she loved playing in little coffee shops (such as this one) because she felt closer to her fans AND she could sing the songs she loved most for them. Give a listen to her covers of Time After Time, Kathy's Song, Songbird, Autumn Leaves and Fields Of Gold. She left us a legacy of beautiful music sung with her angelic voice. Believe it or not, her music became more widely and well known after she died. She truly had a God-given talent!! Love her voice!!

This live recording of Eva making this classic song her very own really was like catching lightning in a bottle- sheer magic. Great story how it became famous only after she died- a friend of some DJ of a popular British BBC radio show suggested he listen, he did, then played it on his show- the switchboard lit up like a Christmas tree- hundreds of callers- who IS this Angel singing?! With word of mouth, repeat plays of her music on the same show, and some months later, her records were at the top of the LP charts in England- and from there the buzz about her hopped “across the pond” back to the US- she was from the Washington DC area- never caught on commercially because the record companies couldn’t fit her in a genre box- she was so eclectic in her musical tastes- gospel, folk, torch songs, and more. She did a fantastic and not well-known concert double album with Chuck Brown- king of DC’s Go-Go music scene (a sub-genre of funk music unique to DC). The album is called the Other Side. For starters, check out the cover she and Chuck Brown did of another classic song- God Bless the Child. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIOVmqFjrNF6b9U

I do not know whether Eva Cassidy taught herself to sing or somebody else did, but she really knew how to sing, and people usually do not reinvent the wheel so perfectly. In one recorded performance (might be "What a Wonderful World" but I'm not sure) she thanks her dad for teaching her to play the guitar, which he did when she was something like nine years old. Her guitar playing is as heartfelt and amazing as her singing.

Ten years ago, as my mother was battling cancer, I came home with a cd of music I had burned at F.Y.E. In the afternoons, she used to tell me to turn off the television because she liked to hear music. So I would load the multi-disc player and let her have her time of peace. Her favorites were Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones, and two new artists that were new to her that she grew to enjoy very much. The first was Norah Jones, and the other was Eva Cassidy. This rendition of OVER THE RAINBOW brought her to tears. As did the covers of Cyndi Lauper's TRUE COLORS and BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN by Willie Nelson. Their music gave her some peace. It has been 1o years since my mother passed away. Her birthday is the same day as Elvis'. Hearing it today on your channel brought tears to my eyes. I find both comfort and her spirit in this song when I hear it now, knowing that she is somewhere over the rainbow with Eva and Elvis. May they all rest in peace.

I heard several of Eva's songs one evening while just 'surfing around' for music, had never heard of her before... THEN, a couple of days later, I ran across a video explaining her story and her death. Frankly, it messed me up for a while. Just such an exceptional talent. 'Over The Rainbow' has always been my favorite 'pop' song, the most perfect pop song ever (in my mind), and she did an absolutely angelic version of it.

If you don’t tear up a little bit (or a lot!) when you hear this for the first time, you’re not really listening. Eva had a cold the night this was recorded, which is why some of her notes fell off a bit too soon. Such a beautiful soul, such an unbelievably talented artist, lost much too soon.

It's only just started and I'm crying already, rough start with the new year. Lost one of my pets on New Years day morning, 9 y.o.... Went across the rainbow bridge to see his friends. She was re-discovered by an English Radio Presenter called Sir Terry Wogan. Her guitar playing is subliminal. OMG, her and izzys redintions, are heart breakers, soul kissers, and the happiest and saddest singing of the song. I can't watch anymore sorry xx

Thank you for reviewing this amazing artist! Eva was a very special person whom was taken from us way too early. Just to give you an idea of the kind of person she was, after knowing that her time here on earth was waning, she wanted to gig one more time to thank her "regulars". Walking with a cane, in lots of pain, and on drugs to help that, she did gig. Her opening song? "What a Wonderful World". Just a class lady whom I very much love.

Every time I hear and/or watch this song, I am brought to tears. Watching others react also increases the amount of tears that I cry. Eva reached deep down into her soul to give us her message locked within these lyrics. And I'm sure God is well pleased. LOVE is everything. Share it. Live it. Be it. May God have mercy on us. Find Him. Begin a relationship with Him. Find out why He sent His only Son to offer up His life for us despicable humans. And why He touches some of us with His unmistakable beauty. I can't wait to go to heaven and go to all the concerts from the greats of old.

Just a young lady and her guitar, so beautiful. There are several videos out on You Tube about she and her music. My favorite was a short story way back when on a morning talk show where they talked about this beautiful and talented artist and how she didn't sign with any record company and when one executive who listened to her a was so amazed with her talent, but wasn't sure how to market her. So he decided not to sign her...he said he always had regrets and when he heard she had cancer and was dying, he called to apologize to her and he said she was so kind and humble in her response to him. She was comforting him instead of the other way around... he got choked up during his interview. But many other interviews with musicians ( Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwod Mac ) with his story of her. She would be a star today I believe had she lived. But God had other plans for her :) Documentary called "Eva Cassidy - One Night That Changed Everything (documentary)" on You Tube is worth viewing. Her story about who she was as a person and musician as told by her band. :)

She didn't become widely known until after her death. A DJ in England played this and the switchboard lit up with calls. Some were actually saying there should have been a warning because it was unsafe to drive while they were crying their eyes out. As you can see, she was also a very talented guitarist and she did most of her own arrangements. Btw, she was also a very talented visual artist. I think you can buy prints of some of her drawings and paintings.

This concert in Blues Alley, DC area, is one of the rare live recording of Eva, who died 10 month after from Melanoma. There are other amazing live videos from this concert (Autumn Leaves, Nightbird, Stormy Monday, …) plus a couple others. When Over the Ranbow was played in UK on the BBC a few years after her death, it Immediately created a tsunami of inquiries to know more about her. 5 Albums were created with her studio recordings and these albums reached #1 in UK charts with a cumulated 10 millions records sale. Just a fun aside...supposedly she was doing that gig with a terrible head cold...and that's still how she sounded. The drop in the last line is probably a result of that. I don't believe in angels, but for Eva, I may make an exception. Also, at least from interviews I've read, she sort've considered herself a vocalist second and a guitarist first. Very humble lady with remarkable musical talent.
