That final four bar break at the end was old Red Hawley on drums. I bumped into him about eight years ago playing at Captain Hirams in Sebastian Florida. The man had some great stories, He also was with Don Goldie here in Miami. a very swinging drummer

The Dukes of Dixieland did a wonderful job with this song. However, for the record, "Over the Waves" is "Sobre las Alas" and was composed by México's famous international musician/composer/band leader/violinist/pianist, José Juventino Policarpo Rosas Cadenas (January 25, 1868 - July 9, 1894).

Yes. The connection with New Orleans traditional jazz is that it was one of the tunes introduced by the 8th Mexican Cavalry Band which became very popular in New Orleans when it came for the 1884 Cotton Centennial and returned in subsequent years. The band was a great influence on New Orleans music of the time, and this is a surviving relic.

@@BeerStein Very interesting. I read somewhere that the influence of Mexican musicians and music teachers was strong in the early stages of jazz, as it appears to be so in Scott Joplin's "Solace, a Mexican serenade"

The chord progression of "Sobre las Alas" - originally composed as a waltz - were the foundation of the first New Orleans "hit tune, "Tiger Rag".

I knew them in Vegas in 58. Remembering the clarinet player then stuttered. I didn't think it was Freddy at the time. Could be wrong, anyone know?
