0:05 Cloud Cars aren't space ships. 4:41 It wasn't Leia. It was a new character who'd appear in the then planned Sequel Trilogy. It was going to be Luke's hidden sister called Nellith, who'd be in training on the other side of the galaxy. 4:57 I've argued this point MANY times with Lucas gushers, ones who insist that Leia was always supposed to be "The Other" because of this scene. Leia WASN'T using the Force when she heard Luke communicating with her. Luke was the one using the Force to communicate with her using telepathy. It only takes the sender to have telepathic powers, NOT the recipient. Why did Luke communicate with Leia, I hear you ask? Who else could help him in that situation? He didn't know or trust Lando, and communicating with Chewbacca would've been silly. 5:53 The big question is why would Vader sit at a conventional dinner table when he doesn't have the ability to eat or drink without a sealed meditation chamber. 7:50 In universe that was supposed to be Fett, accompanied by Stormtroopers. The EU even explains why we see an IG-88 droid wrecked in the chamber. Fett had just destroyed it when 3PO stumbled in. Supposedly, it was another IG-88 unit that the one we saw earlier had sent to Cloud City to catch Han. 8:52 Vader was torturing Han because he knew that Luke would sense his pain, just as we saw on Dagobah. It was his way to draw him into his trap. 9:41 Another clumsy retcon, this time from a cartoon made 20+ years after ESB was made. When this movie was made humans were rarely if ever frozen in carbonite, and it was seen as highly unlikely that they could survive the process. 9:55 Who says they were killed? What, is the armour they're wearing made of chewing gum or something? And even if they were killed, Stormtroopers are considered to be expendable assets by the Empire.

3:36 It's not really about untrained. When Jedi tap into the Dark Side during Imbalance, they need to "clean themselves" extensively, in order to escape the addictive, "gravitational" pull of the dominant Dark Side pattern. Dooku neglected this, because he saw the Jedi Order as abusers of the Force (it partially controls your actions, AND obeys your commands - it's hard to tell what's chicken and what's egg). And the Jedi Order were part to the Imbalance, so he was right in that sense. But he still fell due to the strong bi-directionality of the Force. Like Mace Windu had to join the Jedi, too, even though he didn't like it - he would have been corrupted if he tried going it alone. Yoda only knows how this works in Imbalance, it's all he's ever witnessed, and why he set the Jedi Order up that way. He is rightfully paranoid about it. But it's not about turning quickly, it is about the certainty of it. Force Ghosts are the Force - communicating to sentient beings through a concept of post-mortality, that can be understood and not shatter the mind. So yeah, Force Ghost Obi-Wan is a reflection from Luke, who knows (even if he's not allowed to say so) what Luke experienced in the cave - "he" knew that Vader was seen to (want to) turn Luke into Vader 2.0. Luke didn't quite understand the lesson, at the time - didn't want to think, he could become the most evil guy in the galaxy. And yes, they cannot haunt the Force users that killed them - their image would simply be blocked. They also couldn't manifest on Exegol, but Rey could pack them in her head, through her wish powers. Obi-Wan also died on the first Death Star, to trap his energy there, so he could help make the eventual attack a 1/1.000.000 success. That phenomenon is very similar to the so-called Dark Side Ghosts, (e.g. Bane) whose manifestations are embedded in and bound to (one or several) specific locations, and can't "visit their friends". Luke and Leia incest because it is a common confusion that happens in real life, when estranged siblings meet - something just clicks, and people assume is a sign from the lust gods, that they should get their freak on. I'm pretty sure Lucas put it in there, because he regretted making the hero of the story a dehumanizing, objectifying incel whackjob, who masturbates over every single "pretty girl" he sees on the holo-viewer. Someone must have mentioned to him, that it's not normal to have such a possessive, abusive and entitled attitude towards people of the opposite gender, and a bit too gross, even for an 80s hero. The ugnauts make the same mistake as the ewoks - they see "gold" (that's how it is shown to us), and immediately worship it. Chewbacca likely understands these "children" are just a bit more stupid than he is, and doesn't want to hurt them for it.

I think I read somewhere that Vader wasn't trying to interrogate Han, he just wanted to torture him so that Luke would feel his pain through the force and come and help him.

Y'know I'm not exactly convinced that the last time Han and Lando saw each other before this movie was in Solo. After all, Lando says "You have a lot of guts coming HERE, after what you pulled." It sounds almost like they eventually reconnected at Cloud City at some point in the past, but before Lando became an administrator there, hence Han's later surprise.

Originally Luke was supposed to have a sister somewhere else in the galaxy and IIRC either in the third film or the sequel trilogy at the time was dedicated to finding Luke's sister. Then Lucas decided to simplify everything again and just have Leia be the sister.

Way I read it, RotJ would've been Luke vs Vader with the Emperor escaping, and then ep 7-9 the search for his sister and the final confrontation against the Emperor. Then shit happened. Lucas got in problem with the directors union over ESB and Spielberg was no longer allowed to direct RotJ. Lucas was so tired and his marriage in trouble, that he decided to end the saga with RotJ and to solve the dangling thread, made Leia Luke's sister.

6:25 Han Solo was just some conman and smuggler, until he showed up on the Death Star. One would have to assume, as a paid mercenary, since he could make a living in the mid- and outer rim, while only having to fear the ruling gangs and gangster bosses. He had no reason to risk his life, fighting the Empire. But of course he still got his face on a wanted notice, after prison breaking a notorious rebel, and again, after taking pot shots at Vader, making it desirable for him to hide out on Hoth. So there were things to talk about... "Sell me Luke Skywalker, break the morale of the rebels, get paid and pardoned - oh, and try the veal, it's supple and delicious." Besides, Vader wanted to have Lando believe the Empire only came to help him, in spite of the rumours about why the Empire involve themselves in outer rim business. So a polite dinner conversation was suggested. Lando keeps Cloud City "hidden" by careful money management - hard for the Empire to snoop, because on paper, it looks like he's paying his taxes, just running a really bad business model. But this is the outer rim... in the inner, core or colonies, this kind of behaviour would have the IRS all the way up the wazoo (also because there's generally more legal tender floating about there, more worth the hassle). Luke must have received some intel, along the lines of "No trajectory recorded for the Millennium Falcon, no rendez-vous established", meaning there were a maximum 100 inhabited planets, they could have gone to, unless they completely fixed the hyper-drive without any new parts, and made the jump much later. And only one floating gas mining city among them. A pretty educated guess. 9:41 The carbon-freezer on Bespin is ancient, cheap tech... it was never intended to freeze living things. 10:16 Chewie was unarmed - his tantrum wasn't likely to cause a security problem, outside of possibly dismembering a few of the 501st., who Vader ultimately doesn't care about, especially not compared to capturing Luke, his only chance to overthrow the Emperor. He is also bound to Han by a life-debt, not really choosing to fight the Empire, and he could even be bait, to capture Luke later, if something didn't go according to plan. Luke got cocky, kid! Just when he was thinking the mad old hermit was some hallucinogenic fever dream, this space frog shows up with incredible magic, teaches him, and let's him feel, that he is the Chosen One, who cannot fail... he just has to show up, stand around, and he'll be hired. And he's not too far off, either.
@danielrubinow96744 ай бұрын
Lando says that Skywalker is coming because he overheard Vader's plan. He isn't saying that he knew for a fact that Luke was approaching. He was only saying that Vader's plan was to attract Luke. And it's not that carbon freezing people/creatures is uncommon or unsafe. It's that the Bespin facility has only been used for carbon freezing, not carbon freezing as a way to preserve a living thing. The Bespin carbon freezer wasn't meant to freeze people. That's why Vader wanted to test it.

I got the impression that the Imperials in Cloud City did the "lock every door but one" trick often seen in video games. Having doors open for Luke (or close themselves) to route him to Vader, creating only the illusion of choosing his own path. Leia & Company later run into this same problem, but Lando knows the actual layout of Cloud City and R2 can hack open closed doors.

One big criticism for me is that the training on Dagobah never taught Luke how to properly fight with the saber, only to swing from vines
@rikk3194 ай бұрын
A lot of training happens that isn't portrayed, if the timeline of Luke being there at least a month or three is true. Still, it would have been nice to see Yoda train Luke a bit with a lightsaber, but the special effects weren't capable of showing Yoda as a puppet train Luke that way.

I think the sort of reverse engineered justification for testing the carbon freezing chamber is because that particular facility is “crude” whatever that means here

Yep. I recall from the novelisation that it was used to freeze the gas they mined, and thus not suited for freezing humans. Thus it wasn't certain the equipment could freeze a human and keep him alive.
