The funniest thing to see is in alliance raids when tanks fight for aggro on the main boss and the boss is spinning around which usually ends up cleaving the rest of the group.

I think I accidentally benefited from the sprout experience way back when I started. FFXIV was my first MMO and I didn't even realise there were roles when I started the game. I just picked Paladin because I love the aesthetic of the sword and board. Despite reading all the tool tips and acknowledging I was tankier than most other classes because of tank stance and defensives, I still didn't correlate "you're the tank" with "you're holding enemy agro for the party's sake." I think it was around the time I reached Praetorium when I finally realised "OH IM A TANK??" and I wasn't just some weird mix between a tank and a dps. Tank anxiety didn't occur for me because I was too stupid to realise I was even tanking in the first place.

When i started tanking i thought you needed to constantly refresh your tank stance, so i would press tank stance on cd (this was before the cd reduction so it seemed reasonable to need to press an "emnity up" button every 10 seconds)

For me its less about making mistakes, because shit i make mistakes ALL the time as healer. But I approach things carefully, and am slow to pull groups because i wanted to know how far i needed to go, or what enemies will be gnawing on my ass for the next minute or so, and people just don't like that. There is always someone like Xeno who will run past me and pull for me to get the thing done faster. And it just doesn't matter. I'm the bad guy because im too slow for folk. So, i just wont tank unless i know the dungeon very well, but by that point, Id rather be healing anyway.

Tanxiety might seem silly to a lot of people but for me it comes from wanting people around me to have a good time. When im tanking im constantly thinking about things like am i pulling enough, is the healer able to keep up with me, am i using mits correctly, is the boss facing the correct way, are melee able to do positionals if i move out of this aoe etc. As a DPS i feel like i can get away with messing up because the responsibilities are more personal and not as noticeable.

I used to play SWTOR, so there's some tank anxiety in me when I first started playing FF14. I used to get yelled at in dungeons in SWTOR when I pulled a mob I could've skipped or not know the optimal way around the dungeon, so I kinda carried that mentality into 14 when I first started and did not play tank. It took me a while to pick up tanking but I did when I realized that no one's going to yell at me and it took me until doing Savage/Ultis to stop caring about what randos in a dungeon think. It sort of gave me perspective that the tanks I encountered + myself when I tank on hard content are/can be shit at the game and still clear and I was like... why was I worried about tanking in casual content.

The game literally takes care of most of those points already. You just run wall to wall because every dungeon is the same formulaic slop that has two packs max per pull other than the rare exception. You literally just have to turn the boss around and keep it relatively still. Mits you get a feel for and things like tankbusters are announced very brightly too anyway.
@mosselyn5081

This is my struggle, exactly. I do tank, infrequently, in this game because the community is more chill than others I've seen, and there's not such an expectation of leadership or knowing where to go. However, I still fret the whole time about whether or not I am handing my mits properly, even in just a leveling dungeon. Maybe it is because I main healer, and I know what a big difference good/bad mit rotations make. All that said, I have never had someone yell at me about my tanking or seen them yell at someone else who was struggling as a tank. The most I see is occasionally a suggestion about how to do better. If you want to tackle your tank anxiety, this is the game to do it in, IMO.

Tanxiety is silly, it's just a fear of failure. Here are a few things to address those concerns - 1. Big enough pulls- If you can pull more, pull more - always wall to wall - * exception to this is some ARR dungeons where they didn't add any fun spoiling barriers. 2. Healer keeping up - The healer WILL keep up with you, sprint out of the gate and don't look back, your job is to go and gather the mobs and group them up 3. Mits - this one I can understand, general rule of thumb is don't use all at once, stagger them, double up the weaker mits. Don't forget about reprisal and arm's length, or even your super mitigation if you really need it (too many people sit on that don't use it, and I don't know why) 4. Boss direction - when in doubt, point it north, if still in doubt, just keep it facing where it is. As long as you don't spin it, the DPS won't have a problem. 5. Melee positions when dodging - Don't worry about that, don't even think about that, if you have to get out of AOEs you get out of AOEs, if its trash they wont be using positionals anyway, and if its a boss the boss is probably static at this point. If not the DPS have tools to aid with keeping positionals and uptime. That is not your concern. 6. Comment on your last point - oh... it's noticed, it's just that nobody cares... that's the point, and its the same on tank, if you fuck up - you fuck up - you are a human not a machine. And if people do notice that's good. Use it as motivation to improve, so not repeat those same mistakes. If you ever feel anxious about tanking or anything online really, remember you have a certain level of anonymity. People don't know who cammywinters6647 is in real life, so what does it matter if you fuck up from behind a screen? I hope this advice helps. Really I do. Good luck :)

This tank anxiety was even present during FF11 online back in 2003. I was there and I started as the Warrior which eventually became a Paladin. The leadership role came for the Tank to navigate through dangerous areas of the game and telling people where to go. So, this phenomenon has been a thing for a long time.

As someone who tanks, I remember on my first account back in 2017 that I got up to The Chrysalis as a noob Paladin that had no idea you were supposed to tank the meteors since the mechanic sorta came out of nowhere. After two wipes because of my foolishness, the other tank flipped out in chat and then threw a vote kick.. on one of the healers by accident. Once I knew the mechanic, we passed the very next time. It's not hard, it just means knowing what has to be done and there's a couple cases where the devs really need more conveyance, like what a red marker with orbs means for tank stacks.

Yes, communication is always available on chat, but not by throwing rage out of nothing. There should always be at least a person knows what to do, if not, learnt it by wipe. “Live, die, and know.” 😂For future ref if you get Nabriales in Chrysalis again, during when he pulls out the rift before meteor phase, we can pop OGCDs buff like Rampart, Sentinel/Vengeance/Nebula/Shadow Wall, Shelton, or healers’ regen aoe, because once you get in meteor phase, the duration of the buff doubled or tripled! It’s very broken when you are a paladin and you popped Hallowed Ground. No damage taken when soak meteors at all. 😂😂😂

Honestly, find some people that are willing to be chill when you're learning and you can kick tanxiety real quick. I personally had my first real tanking experience as a GNB, getting thrown into Pharos Sirius normal. The dungeon itself is already not particularly forgiving to newer players which I was at the time, but I barely knew how to tank. I was guilty of the "didn't read the tooltips" skill issue. I was lucky because I actually had some chill mentors from the Novice Network that I'd queued with that were super supportive, actually teaching me, and wanted to stick out the dungeon even when I offered to leave so they could get a competent tank backfill or just leave altogether without penalty. This helped me build a "we ball" mindset for tanking and now I'm perfectly comfortable with tanking in everything but Ultimates and even then I'm considering learning to tank an Ulti.

I think Aurum Vale is the best example and imo the game is to blame for this. There's literally no indicator that tells you you have to eat these fruits, or when you have to eat them (at two stacks). Battle content is stressful even when the fight is easy, combat music kicking in activates monke brain. As an inexperienced player you might not even see the stack, don't see the fruits, don't know they're related. I've seen so many people mess up in this dungeon, from healers just standing there and dying or tanks refusing to eat the fruits even when you write it in chat. There were SO DAMN MANY.

I realized for me I was so jaded at seeing how a lot of the WoW community treated healers and tanks that avoided tanking and healing because of an association with just getting absolutely battered by random people. Mind you, this is specifically seeing people getting the brunt of slurs, swears, and all caps freak outs in over the 7 years I've played. I finally decided to try it out in FFXIV to overcome that and have gotten over that hurdle and realized a very interesting thing, at least for FFXIV. Tanking and Healing is 95% easier than I thought and I love it. For my own personal experience, the FFXIV community in particular helped me overcome that but I was also surprised to see how quickly the switch flipped. It was literally in a matter of days for me realizing "Huh, this is actually great."

I had tank anxiety from coming from WoW... Duty Support helped loads..it helped me learn the dungeon routes. and doing it with npcs gave me the knowledge like "If I can do this pull with alphinaud healing me, Then surely it will be fine with an actual player" infact having alphinaud heal me even helped teach me how to manage my mititgations cause you know hes not gonna give you a single heal for like the first 30 seconds of each pull xD going into alliance raids i just went in the first few times with the mindset of "Okay im gonna be a blue dps until I cant".. you can watch how other tanks do the bosses and their posistioning and just copy them next time. Ive been practicing doing the "Harder" wall to wall pulls.. but I just pre-warn my group "This is gonna be a big pull and im probably gonna get my ass handed too me" and generally they're good about it. when you start pushing your limits you better understand what you can and cant handle and that reduces your anxiety cause you get the knowledge "Well this is only 1 pack.. and i can tank 3-5 if i wanted". and work your way up to your limit more consistantly without as much fear

I never looked up rotations, i never looked up pull routes and layouts. I just learned. It was so much fun and everybody was always nice for the most part. I never really made major mistakes, but i did start pulling individual packs just because i didn't understand. By the end of ARR, i was pulling 3 to 4 packs working entirely around my healer and their mana. Obviously my experience went be everyone's, but i feel like most of my ability came from just jumping into it head on and trying to get better at it. I recently got my partner into the game and after trying a couple classes at the beginning she decided on gladiator, so now she is jumping into tanking from day one. I really think it's the way to go about it. Now healing stresses me out, so i definitely understand that, but I'm considering starting to heal for my group of friends i roped in to playing since none of them want to, so ill be jumping head first into healing as well and just learn along the way

When I started FFXIV, I chose to play marauder because I thought, "I never play characters with axes, maybe I should try it." Five years later, several job changes, all jobs max level etc., I still go to warrior as my main job. I had no idea about the tank/healer/DPS trifecta when I started, I'd heard of it but I didn't really understand, so naturally, I had a TON of tank anxiety with just normal easy dungeons in the beginning. I still remember my first time queuing into Aurum Vale - a SCH emoted '[player name] expresses their utter disappointment,' and not knowing any better I tried to be all like 'hi! I'm new here!' ofc the first pull I die and we wipe and the healer left. That stuck with me hard, and for the rest of the MSQ I just solo unsynced most everything because the MSQ exp totally over levels you. Well, long story short, I'm tanking savage now, have done some ultimate prog as tank, and I love it. Now I'm just like, fuck tank anxiety! I think for me what helped me overcome it was seeing a lot of really bad tanks when I mainly played DPS. It was kinda like, hey, we all suck sometimes, and it's ok.

I’m currently overcoming not only tank anxiety in FFXIV but also PTSD from my really bad statics from when Abyssos and Anabaseois tiers were considered current content (No Echo). I am currently in 2 DSR statics as a Main Warrior tank and I’ve had both of them told me that not only am I doing really good at tanking but they are kinda shocked that I never cleared an Ultimate let alone a full Savage Tier (when it’s considered current content) There is a possibility that I will be clearing DSR within a couple of weeks from now and getting my first legend title along with my first ultimate axe.

We always suggest starting from a lvl 1 job instead of jumping into something like SGE or GNB, cause of the different style in roles on top of a skill set up to 60-70 you've not had practice with will confuse the ever living f out of you if you didnt at least level a warrior or whm first

Tbf FF14 was my first MMO where I actually reached group content (I used to play free ones on a netbook until I reached the part of the game where it couldn't handle the game) So it makes sense having tank anxiety and I used to die and it was because I didn't level my gear because I was levelling tank to level it not to want to play it not thinking about the fact that was making it harder for me and the healer, but it did teach me to mit and it was stone vigil when I finally geared and and I had so much fun with that dungeon onward once I did. Now have mellee anxiety because I can't tell when I have successfully done a positional, like when it snap shots and I have healer anxiety because sure tanks have responsibility, but I can't mis click a mit on the wrong person very easily and it's not as drastic as doing so with a heal most of the time, sure I could in DSR now but I've played tank long enough that I'm familiar with taht stuff now and it's also only 1 skill that's targeted for others (I play controller but mit other people with F2-F8)

Before Heavensward, the mere idea of tanking (or worst, healing) was so alien to me that I never bothered even unlocking Gladiator and Marauder. I couldn't see myself taking the responsibility of holding on enemies for my friends or randoms to smack around till they died. Then again, tanking back in ARR was a whole different beast than what tanking is nowadays. Then the trailer for Heavensward dropped and the reveal of the Dark Knight as a new job! I was excited! ... then they confirmed it was a tanking job... I was less excited. At the time, I had stopped playing FFXIV but my love for the Dark Knight job in other games made me resub and play again, starting from scratch as my friends had moved to another server. During that time, I asked them to teach me tanking as I was going to play Dark Knight. I was dead set on that idea. And yes, tanking anxiety kicked in. I'd often only tank with friends at first or queue the leveling roulette with a friend as my healer to avoid having to deal with a random healer who'd get pissed at me for tanking badly. HW dropped and by then, I had gotten... competent. Not great but I knew how to check for enemy aggro, how to pull them back into the fold if they tried to run to an ally. Dark Knight at the time wasn't easy either with having to manage both their tank stance, their enmity combos (yes, you had specific moves to generate enmity) and Dark Arts which ate up your MP like nobody's business. It was a complicated job... but again, I loved the esthetics of it (my first real FF being FF4 so Cecil Harvey as a Dark Knight was my favorite character) so I toughed it out. By the end of HW, I had also started to heal because I liked the card mechanics of the Astrologian (and put Arrows on Monks and watch them eat up their TP!) and while I didn't dip often into it, healing anxiety was also a thing. By mid Stormblood, my tanking anxiety was gone. Good tanking habits had made it so I knew what to look for, how to react. I also standardized my hotkeys so that my brain could simply move from one job to the other without much adjustment, like having my tanks and melee jobs all having a stun on my "5" key for example. I'd still prefer DPS overall (hur dur, big numbers, me likey!) as a more relaxed way to play the game as you dying was more of a personal impact, unlike a tank or healer being downed. I still preferred Dark Knight and Astrologian as my go to tanking and healer jobs. Shadowbringers dropped and the featured job (besides GNB) was the Dark Knight... so of course I would use DRK for the MSQ. It was the first time I went in dungeons blind that I had never done as a DPS beforehand. And by now, tanking had gotten quite easier. In fact, I sometimes still miss the more complex mechanics from older expacs (to a degree) but I wouldn't wish them on a new player starting out. Tanking is far more casual now and has become one of my favorite role to play since ShB. All in all, this is only to say that there are only a few ways to overcome tanking (and healing) anxiety : - Practice and learn your buttons, what they do and how to pace your CDs until you can fully focus on the fight without needing to look for them and that naturally comes with time - Setup your keys or buttons in a familiar way between jobs so you can naturally react even while playing another job. - Understand that failure happens and 'most' people will be understanding. The toxic players aren't the majority (unless you're doing Savage / Ultimate with randos) and they can be dismissed either during or after the instance anyway. - Accept feedback as long as it is constructive, don't "You don't pay my sub" people who seem to genuinely give good advice. You might well end up learning something you didn't know or even befriend someone in the process. - Let people know when you're unfamiliar with a certain type of content or new to it. You'd be surprised how many understand what you've been through and go easier on you. Heck, they might even give you hints on what's to come or what to do if you don't pick up on a mechanic.

Just my personal opinion on this: (on 'learning from your mistake bit') (1) Knowing that there is a mistake/took place; (2) Who made the mistake; and (3) Whether the mistake is something that need to be learnt from. Most of the time, (1) is the most obvious thing to spot. But (2) is what I find, from my own experience, that not everyone can see (sometimes ppl can falsely accuse or assign the blame on something that they don't even know - unless you check the actual log for details). As for (3), well depends on whether the person who made the mistake cared enough about it to even want to learn from it. If yes, good for them, if no, then yeah, they're never going to learn from their mistakes (heck, they may not even know that they are the one who made the mistake too, haha).

I remember when I started ARR back in 14 I'd never played an MMO but I knew I wanted to be a healer so I played WHM and healed until level cap. The only DPS job I enjoyed was Monk so I decided to give Tanking a go so I tried both WAR and PLD in random duties and ended up loving it. Dropped healing as a main and am now a Tank main, it's so easy [even easier now, but I do miss ARR trying to maintain aggro]. It's not until you actually get in and start rumbling and seeing how it feels that you actually understand how good it is. It seems like there is a lot to do but it's literally just point boss N, dodge aoes, move as little as possible and 123. Biggest thing new tanks need to learn is that it's the trash that hit harder than the bosses and that's what you use mitigation on. See too many tanks not using mit or saving it for the bosses as you'd expect thats where the damage is.

Then, one day i just said, fuck it, i'm doing it; And it's been fun, it's a new experience and, to be honest, my fear was justified. You are the guy, you are the one responsible for things, you make the decisions. And when you die, you feel way worse and embarassed then when playing other roles, that's a fact.

I have tank anxiety myself. It can be difficult to understand when you don't have an anxiety disorder yourself or don't really experience anxiety in general (I have been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder), but personally for me anxiety = not being able to trust myself even if I logically know I am doing a good job and I fear that people will judge me if I don't do well. When I tank, I worry about how to use my mitigations, if I missed any enemies during pulls, which way to go, if I do something wrong will people get mad at me etc. I acknowledge that how I'm feeling and thinking is irrational and overly dramatic, and that in reality it's not serious at all and my world won't end from making one mistake.. But alas, it only helps for a very short time. The only thing that has helped me with my anxiety has been medication to treat the physical symptoms of it (hands shaking, cold sweat, heart beating so loud I can hear and feel it, tense muscles etc). Having tank anxiety (and anxiety in general) might seem dramatic to others, but honestly it's an internal struggle that you likely won't understand if you haven't gone through it yourself. And even then, anxiety works in different ways for different people. For some tanking enough times helps, for others it won't. I love to tank and play with other people, that's why I haven't given up even though my anxiety tries to get in the way. And funnily enough I am a healer main, which doesn't make sense since it's also a responsibility heavy job, but somehow it feels better since I have more control over the situation in general + I have come to find out I perform best when shit hits the fan so to speak. I was anxious about healing in the beginning too, but I fell in love with astrologian and the rest is history. I just hope that my tank anxiety will go away too with time. And to my fellow anxious people in here, you're not alone. Take one step at a time.

I'm more of a close DPS and caster fan, so in most games I end up playing witches with big hats. I know the hardcore MMO people complain about FF14 being too easy-going, but I LOVE that a lot and it took my tanxiety away. First time I ever tried playing something like a paladin and having a blast, to the point I even did it in the easier savage raids. I feel like a lot of tank anxiety comes from pre-conceived notions from tanking in other MMOs where it can be a genuinely hard and stressful job, especially if you're new. Maintaining aggro is more difficult, you're expected to know dungeon pathing/shortcuts (and dungeons aren't hallways), and pulling too much can actually kill you. Players in said other MMOs can also be very trigger happy over kicking underperformers. Contrast that with FFXIV, where aggro is stupidly easy to maintain, you're basically invincible even if you pull the wall to wall (provided you mitigate properly and your healer has a pulse), and there's no pathing beyond a couple of ARR dungeons. Heck, by the time you're level 90, you're so defensive that you can run expert roulette with a tank and 3 DPS - no need for a healer. As a result, the "leader" role is also gone - no need for it when there's only one path forward. Even when mistakes happen, a competent healer or melee DPS can cover with healing, arm's length, and bloodbath. And even if you do wipe, there's no penalties beyond some armor damage and a 1 minute run back to where you were. In short, SE has remove nearly every barrier to tanking - the only solution to tank anxiety is to do what the article says and just start tanking. There's nothing left SE can do to make it easier other than make hallowed ground last 30 minutes. Do toxic players who yell at new tanks exist? Of course; that's just the reality in a game as big as FFXIV. But more often than not, FFXIV players are chill almost to a fault. Your party members are more likely to keep their mouth shut and not give you advice than they are to call you a slur. This unfortunately means that bad habits can perpetuate to endgame rather than get stomped out earlier. And this in turn makes tank anxiety a self fulfilling prophecy as players never improve as tanks nor never see good tanks - thus perpetuating the view of "tanking hard."

I love tanking in FFXIV and prefer to main-tank every encounter. I've been playing FFXIV since 2019 but only started raiding in Endwalker. I've cleared every EX fight, all 12 savage encounters, and my friends and I are almost done progging the newest criterion savage encounter. I've played in statics, played with IRL friends, and made friends in PF, and the universal reason I hear for why people have tank anxiety or don't want to tank is because they came from WoW and have seen tank after tank be berated over there. I played WoW from roughly 2009 through 2017, and I won't lie, coming to FFXIV I was a little hesitant to play a tank initially, but I found a way to move past that and now I love tanking more than anything. I was recently hanging out with a friend on Discord and he was streaming himself spamming dungeons to level an alt in WoW, and he was vote-kicked twice over the course of our 2 hour call, in LEVELING DUNGEONS, for the stupidest shit. One guy got knocked back into a group of adds on a lower floor, then blamed the tank for him dying even though his death was instant because of how many adds he accidentally pulled. If you've been conditioned to think that your existence in a group can be snuffed out for the smallest mistakes from another game, especially in content that isn't even serious, then of course you're going to have some tank anxiety if you even decide to tank yourself.

i wish this was overdramatised lol. i have the WORST rng in my tanking parties. the dps seemingly have some type of extra sprint which makes them go ahead of me every time. not an issue as i always grab them but it makes me FULLY aware im slower than i should. plus when i see my health dropping despite my mits im again reminded im clearly doing something wrong. plus the aoes. i stg as a monk in a normal dungeon i do not get so many aoes under my feet. as a tank theyre there all the time. clearly im missing something. thank god for duty support :p least alph doesnt mind if i suck XD

I had Tank Anxiety Back When Flash Was Still A Thing: No Flash, No Anxiety. (Anything Peels Enemies, It's Great)

god flash was terrible, did no damage, low aggro gain, easy to run out of mp using it. Just worked well with blm sleep aoe so can single target kill mobs and take no damage.

Around the 6 min mark it got brought up about tanks who die and have to run back, and honestly I've had my fair share. I was trying to level an alt job a few weeks ago and a tank kept dying to the final boss of Malikah's Well and this one guy got mega toxic and booted the tank after their 2nd wipe. So it happens, people just sometimes cant read mechanics and have to be explained them and people can get really toxic about it. The tank told us he had just got into ffxiv after taking a break and kept apologizing but they still got toxic

All you really need to help with tanking, especially as a new player, is watch a beginner tankign guide and a class leveling guide. As long as you know what your class does and what you should be doing in dungeons, that's all that matters. If you die to mechanics or whatever that you haven't seen before then no one can blame you since it's new stuff. Usually being a sprout lets you get away with making mistakes. People usually start crying more in higher level content where you are expected to have some level of experience. As long as you spread your mitigation between pulls and make you have agro then you're more than likely fine.

I have tank anxiety because i have anxiety in general. Not necessarily because someone was toxic to me before. "Just balling" attitude is good towards toxic players but if you want to improve because u enjoy tanking, ask for advice. If you don't know what you messed up, ask. And there are multiple guides on keeping agro and good ui for tanking. Doing better builds confidence. First hand experience.

I get more anxiety from healing. There is more responsibility imo.

Been a Tank main, for more than half my playtime, I can say a lot of times, those toxic people are just projecting. They do bad at mechanics, they blame tank for it. They got wipe, blame the tank. Well, at some point, I got tired of hearing that kind of shit, so everytime the party wipe, and i didn't die to the mech, i just carry on, finished the run. I can do this well on PLD and WAR. Even sync, these two job can run any dungeon, solo. Have no fear, bro. Tanking is the best job ever!

I been playing ffxiv since the HW era when allocating stat points was still a thing--didn't touch a single tank/healer till some months before Endwalker came out. And the first one I picked up was GNB/SGE cause they looked cool. I was NOT about to have anything to do with leading the party/keeping the party alone/tank stance/cleric stance or any other major responsibilities till I felt I was competent enough at the game to graduate from just hitting stuff (also being a controller player, learning super late in the game that the d-pad scrolls party members, kinda crucial for healer lol). And even when I did my first tank/healer quest, guess who took their lalafellin arse right back to Sastasha to work their way up learning a few of their skills at a time? This sucka right here. Yeah new tanks/healers make mistakes, but I've seen so many people complain about stuff like tanks not doing aoes, going whole dungeons without stance, healers doing the wrong heal button, all types of stuff...got me 1000000000% messed up if you thought that was gonna be me, I was NOT tryna get yelled at, blasted on social media or tempt ppl into rescuing me into aoes.

I feel people are scared to make mistakes, but thats how you learn. Just type "first time" and just go for it. If you die, you die.
