Making these live edge cherry end tables was fun...until it wasn't. I had a pretty big design failure in making these, so follow along to see what it was and how they turned out.

Even in a fail, I appreciate that you focus so much on design aesthetic. I don't typically take any chances, which leaves me with a lot of squares and rectangles in my house!

The project looks great, Bruce! I know the end result wasn't exactly what you wanted, but at least you didn't have to scrap it entirely. I love the look of those sycamore bow ties! It really added a unique and beautiful touch to the tables. Awesome work. - Joe

Thanks so much, Joe! I appreciate it. I was going to go with maple for the bow ties, but when I saw this sycamore, I knew it was meant to be.

I just listened to your podcast where your discussed this design problem. I appreciate your honesty and I think you made a good choice to add the ready made leg to the unstable corner. The table tops look great!

Thanks so much for saying so! I thought, given the circumstances, it was a decent fix. Also, thanks for being a listener of the podcast! (We Built A Thing, for those reading this later)

I always learn something when I watch your videos! Since you asked, here's what I would have done differently. I would have cut two more pieces of oak and fastened them to the bottom pieces creating a complete square. That way the bottom footprint is a square, rather than a 90° L shape. You could still omit that fourth vertical leg without sacrificing stability.

Thanks, Zach! I actually thought about that method, and with finish already on the base, I thought it would go poorly to try to sand to adhere the new leg pieces. I don’t know. Ha

That's a great idea to achieve a similar look to what the goal was.

This is really similar to what I was thinking too.

The design still looks great! I think to achieve the floating aspect and stability, without using the front post, the base would need some sort of "kicker" toward the floating corner. This would help give the table something to compress against when it tries to tip.

Good point. Maybe it’ll get revisited in the future.

I would have done another leg set like the original - but smaller. Then install them inset from the front corner. You'd get the effect of the first set of legs wrapping around the second set. Still a clean sort of minimalist design complimentary to the angular motif the first set gave you.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich Жыл бұрын
Dang, I like that idea too. I might still revisit this.

My first thought when you showed the table tipping issue was to hollow out a spot or two on thr underside of the top at the back of the piece, and adding some weights/steel plates to help stabilize it. Then your design would still work, and you wouldn't have to add the extra leg.
@BruceAUlrich

I like that idea! Where were you when I was building them? Ha ha
@fosteredwoodworks
@fosteredwoodworks Жыл бұрын
I have done that in the past. It takes a sizeable amount of weight to help stabilize it. Using weights, along with shifting the base, should help.

I would of made the base all over again and filled the existing holes. They would not had been visible as they are on the bottom. That 4th leg to me looks chessy.

I'm going to be honest with you...I am not into the metal leg. Especially because it is in the most visible spot. I'm sorry to be so blunt. I don't blame you for pushing though and getting it done and functional. Lord knows I've done the same. If you'd had more time to think on it I know you could have made a more elegant solution because you've made excellent things in the past that prove it. Now, what I would have tried...maybe add a 45 degree leg touching the floor that bisects your 90 degree angle and extends out to add support on that floating corner without the need for a vertical member. Does that make sense? And to attach it, I'd try pocket screws first and if those failed or felt weak, I'd make a jig for the router to half-lap it. I don't know how well my description comes through, but I can email you a sketch if the idea interests you. Anyway, thanks for the content!

No, I get it. Like I said, it was not my first choice. I don’t remember all of the details of why I needed to just move on now, but I did. I think your explanation made sense. I can still revisit this in the future and this is a good idea. Thank you!
