Overcoming Eldest Daughter Syndrome

I don't know if I ever remember a time when my parents' problems weren't my own.
They're obviously not mine to keep, but it's always felt like they are.
I'm the only daughter and the eldest - naturally, I became the third parent in a party meant for two.
Though not intentional, it happened. And it happens to most women.
And I've never been able to successfully remove myself from their sh*t without extreme measures like moving out of state or other forms of isolation.
I don't want to cut my parents out of my life - I've tried that in my own way and it makes me sad to be disconnected from them.
So what other options are there?
How do we set boundaries but not to the point of ridding yourself of connection completely?

I just turned 46 years old and finally had an EDS-based breakdown. It's taken me until now until to finally set boundaries. Please don't be me. Keep going on your journey to set boundaries and break this cycle.

It's SO hard to recognize, let alone change the patterns and behaviors of how we've shown up for our family and/or the boundaries 😅 Thankful for the internet bringing us together so we're aware!!

I'm glad you feel seen (and hopefully more at ease knowing you're not alone, though I wish we didn't have to trauma bond LOL)
