Overcoming Obstacles to get Citizenship in Mexico

Getting my husband's Mexican Citizenship involved the frustrating (and at times funny) process of dealing with Mexican officials in order to get his Mexican Birth Certificate…IN Mexico; skipping the consulate. How did we do it on our own without speaking fluent Spanish? In this video, I will tell you how we accomplished the task. Maybe you’ll learn from our mistakes, or maybe you’ll just laugh at our story; either way, I’m happy to share.

I have a funny story. We had a baby in Mexico with my wife. Registering the baby was seemingly easy bc I had researched so much about it. The only thing that annoyed me was that they made me bring all our birth and marriage certificates apostilled and then they didn’t use them. Second funny story when we went to get the Mexican passport for the baby. We had fulfilled all the requirements listed on the website AND their copies. But no, They were still distrustful, so they started to ask for other papers that were not listed on the website, luckily I had these papers because I am bureaucratic freak but I can guarantee 75% of people would have been screwed. I noticed they didn’t ask mexican parents for extra compliance paperwork but I understand they don’t know us we are foreign and they want to make sure we are legit.

The Registro Civil prints birth certificates for 25 pesos. Im surprised they guy didn’t mention that.

Hi @echo036 Each office is unique, and what they can allow for may be different, so I can't say for certain if that's an option; but my advice would be to ask the officials at your particular office once they approve all of your paperwork if someone can pick it up in your behalf, if the office is unable to give it to you same day or before you leave. It honestly sounds very doable, though. There are many procedures in Mexico where you can designate someone to do business in your behalf without ever physically showing up to the appointment. So the request wouldn't be "out of the norm." If you are out of the country and still need to access your birth certificate before you physically have it in hand [maybe for your passport?], you can download it from their website. When I was register all I needed was birth certificate, passport and apostille. We had to translate the apostille somewhere far. Didn't need parents or their ID. I think they were able to look them up since I register on the same town were both parents were born it. It a long time to get everthing paper back. I did ran into some little issue that I had to argue with them but was eventually fixed.

What city in Mexico did you do this at? Did you try at multiple locations or just the one?

I see a lot of videos where people register their birth and get there birth certificate then and there. Maybe like 30 mins later. I think the consulate in the US also does it same day. Do you know the reason why you had to wait 10 days?

Hi Sergio. I think how long the wait is to retrieve your birth certificate after the registration will be subject to the office you attend, and how fast they can complete the process. In this instance, we had to wait about 10 days but I've completed the process for several of my clients too; all of which took anywhere from 3-10 days. It may just depend on how "backed up" their system is at the moment and/or how many births took place and were registered that day/week/month. That's my best guess for the variation. Hi Edward. Thank you. I do believe that there are Mexican-government recognized translators in the states; so you don't necessarily have to wait until you arrive in Mexico to find one, you would just need to locate them wherever you are. Some have their services offered solely online, where all you have to do is scan your documents and send them to them and they will mail you a hard copy of your translated documents. Do you know what documents exactly you needed? I have my birth certificate apostille and have dad's mexican birth certificate. Do I just need a perito for my American birth cert?
