I've always loved "mean girl" characters, too! From the brats to psychos, just as you said, but the key for them being likable to me is that they have to be genuinely funny, clever, or multi-layered. I love how Buffy has multiple versions of this trope all done very well (my favorite among them being Cordelia Chase). I take offense to seeing Kikyo lumped in with them in the images, though. She can't help that she's a twisted version of herself. That was forced on her 😭 Anyway, Harlots is such an underrated show that was gone way too soon.

Ugh Harlots is TO. DIE. I've rewatched it so many times. Everything about it is so brilliantly executed, especially the costumes. I think there are a few dresses in this series that were also used in The Duchess and Marie Antionette. There's also a robe ala francais that Liv Tyler wears in season two featuring REAL BEETLE WINGS as a decorative feature on the bodice. I was FLOORED when I spotted it and paused the episode to zoom in! It's this kind of attention to detail that makes me geek out. Beetle wings were an immensely luxurious status symbol in the latter 18th century. The floor of the rainforest was literally swept and then gone through by hand to sort out wings that were fully intact and could be used for adorning luxury fabrics. Obviously this labor intensive process was quite expensive so only people like nobles and royals could afford it. People like the Duchess. More of this please!! 😊

Seems like this show went sort of under the radar for many people (at least I haven't seen a lot of media about it), but it was so good! I loved the self-conscious nod to modernity (like music) so you know the realities are not meant to be taken as 100% authentic, and I loved how a diverse cast was introduced in a very realistic way. My main worry after the 1st episode was that the show would glamorise and sanitise what for most women would have been an incredibly precarious career, but I think they managed to find the right balance (though, of course, it's still helpful to realise, as a viewer, that the show presents top end establishments).

A movie I watched many years ago on VHS (yes, I'm *that* old) was 'Dangerous Beauty' - however, in Australia it was released as 'A Destiny of Her Own' (which I honestly like more). It was a semi-romanticisation of part of the life/ career of a late 16th c Venetian courtesan, Veronica Franco - but while there was certainly some romanticisation (not nearly as much as in 'Gigi', though), there was also a surprising amount of honesty & pathos in dialogue discussing marriage, the lives of courtesans- & how they could easily drop down to common prostitutes without patronage (or if they angered a lover...).

Couple little historical notes: harlots and bridgerton are set in the 1780s/90s and 1810s, respectively. Also in Bridgerton, it was uncommon, just like today, to marry a man 20-30 years older than yourself
@justaname9996 ай бұрын
How have I never heard about this show? Amazing actors and it looks more interesting and raw. Also, the rococo period setting is so lush on its own, without the anachronistic additions that are essentially what makes Bridgerton "cool and fun" and "not like other regency media". I never got into Bridgerton because the plot is a bit superficial, even when the stakes are somewhat high or the transgression severe. And yeah, Lesley Manville and Samantha Morton alone would make this amazing but the other actors seem amazing too. I only know Kate Fleetwood who plays Nancy from stage productions but she's amazing on stage.

I used to be obsessed with this show, it really is very dark and faces harsh realities with so many complex, well written characters
@YokaiEnthusiast6 ай бұрын
The only realistic reason I can give you for the show ending was that the actors were simply too hard to get together at the same time, and several of the main cast asked to be released from their contracts after the first one ran out. Mostly to work on other projects. It's why the third season is ... like that. I'm heart broken, it's such a fantastic show. I love re-watching it.

love your commentary and the video, but from a purely historical standpoint, harlots takes place around 50 years prior to bridgerton. Otherwise, you comparisons in the class divide are still spot on. Love Harlots so much.
@Normanandremy7 ай бұрын
Also as a self described history buff/fanatic who watches a lot of hisotrical content, Harlots is the better show. The accuracy is incredible and it doesn't try to make history into fantasy the Bridgerton does and yet still manages to have representation.

A few things - 1. Tsundere. It's pronounced as (soon-day-ray). Not 'soon-derry'. 2. I know you weren't a fan of ol' girl from Peach Girl lmao Good video though. I don't think it's fair to label all girl villains as just a mean girl. Male villains get to be villains, but I get your point.

For similar subject matter in a Victorian setting, read “The Crimson Petal & The White”; it’s a pretty realistic account of prostitution in Victorian London and gets deep into the Covent Garden Beauties publication. The miniseries was just “meh” but the book is one of my faves.
