Overhauling Obadiah - Iron Man

Is Iron Man the greatest comic book movie ever made? Maybe. Definitely in the top three. But it does have one pretty clear flaw.
The villain doesn't work.
So I take a look at if we can change one thing about Obadiah Stane to make Iron Man an even better movie.

Great ideas, but I would still keep Tony deciding to stop making weapons in the middle of the film because I think it brings more tension between Tony and Obadiah Stane. Also, It would keep that line: "How ironic, Tony! Trying to rid the world of weapons, you gave it its best one ever!" I really like it.

I don't agree that Obadiah was completely unrelatable. I do think that aligning him with the terrorists was a rather lazy way of making him appear evil and that his character would've been a LOT more compelling if they'd played him as a true blue patriot, but I think Oby's motivations were pretty consistent and understandable given what we're told about the past of Stark Industries right near the beginning of the film. Stark Industries was set up as a partnership between Daddy Stark and Obadiah. Ever since the beginning he has been one of the central pillars holding up the company - he has put far more work, blood, sweat and tears into upholding Stark Industries than Tony ever has - and yet for some reason he's treated like a regent, someone who's merely keeping the throne warm until the up-and-comer wunderkind Tony is ready to take it. Put yourself in his shoes. You build a kingdom with someone that you respect and trust as a brother, you work hard for every scrap of recognition and status in serving King Stark fully expecting to be rewarded for your loyalty, and then one day your bro turns around and says 'so hey I went and sired a brat he's gonna rule the kingdom one day have fun looking after it for him' and then promptly dies. It makes perfect sense to me that Obadiah would feel 100% entitled to his role as the successor of Stark Industries - what, he's supposed to just step out of the way just because Stark's kid grew old enough to make bombs? Who *built* the company, damn it?! That being said, using terrorists to try and assassinate him was, as I said, a rather lazy device: if Oby had just been up-front with Tony and said 'look you're a smart kid and I'd like to keep you around but I have NO intention of handing over the reins so don't go thinking you can stop us from making weapons just cuz the company has your name on it' I think that would've been a much more interesting dynamic. Buuuut he turned out to be a typical shallow villain, so backstabbing happened.

The thing I love about this new version is that it really pushes the superhero idea of deciding to take responsibility. Obidiah argues ‘you’re not responsible, so many people have had a hand in this, who’s to say?’ And then Tony learns that yes, that may be true, but the only way for the problem to be fixed is to actively take the responsibility. In shouldering the blame, he takes control of the situation and can begin to make changes. What a lesson.

I loved Iron Man, but that speech at the charity man, I felt genuine chills when I started to nod along when he was asking about where the blame stops. How in the hell have you not been hired by someone as a screenwriter. It's an even greater mystery than whats up with the Bermuda triangle; or how the DCEU constantly surpasses all expectations, specifically of how badly they can make a film.

Obadiah working with the terrorists was actually a good idea. Obadiah was "ironmonger". Ironmonger is the name for someone who sells weapons. Weapons don't get sold if there's no one to shoot them at. Ergo, helping terrorists occasionally so that weapons get sold. It's twisted logic but it plays into the character's power mad persona very well. Trying to kill Tony using terrorists so that Obadiah could take the company is legitimate if twisted. It was only when Tony popped up with the arc reactor that Obadiah found out he was killing the golden goose. Obadiah was just following the money as always

I think Obadiah was secretly a part of Hydra. That make a lot more sense, I just think that they didn’t mention that in TWS. Hydra had a history of working with terrorist organizations to sow chaos. It just makes sense that Hydra would want someone close to one of the smartest, most powerful people in the weapons industry (Stark), and would want someone who could help increase global conflict by arming both sides. I mean what exactly was his plan even at the end of Iron Man? He would kill a public figure in broad daylight and then what? Just sell the tech and go live a happy life? I think having Hydra as a force that could back him up would make a lot more sense.

Why wouldn’t Hydra try to get control of a company like Stark Industry’s, they already compromised most of Shield, senators and various other organisations as shown in Agents of Shield. With Obadiah he could funnel weapons to terrorists to spread fear while those actions only made Hydra controlled organisations stronger, more powerful and take away civil liberties. Just look at how terrorism has effected liberty since 9/11. Also with his position at the for front of technological development he could funnel the best advances to Hydra rather than getting to the hands of their enemy’s. We know the Arc reactor was an advent to sustainable power generation, it just at the time was not with the replaced palladium substance that Howard could not manufacturer. So before he could use it to bring in a new age of power generation Hydra had him killed while Obadiah kept the technology from the world, Hydra probably controls the oil company’s. So when Tony appears with an advance in arc technology, as well as wanted it for advances in weapons it is also making sure it doesn’t lead to a whole new power generation for the world.

SxC97 only problem is that the MCU was in its infancy so they didn't try to plan too far ahead to link the stories more intrinsically. Remember this film was made not knowing that MARVEL would absolutely dominate the film industry for the next 10 years. However it does help and make a more interesting story overall

They could've retconned Obadaiah into a Hydra agent, maybe in the scene where Steve finds AI Zola they could've shown a brief picture of Obadaiah as an agent. They retconned the mask wearing kid from Iron Man 2 into Peter Parker so a retcon like Hydra Iron Monger could've worked.

Being able to understand villains isn't key, I would say. Look at the Joker. I mean, I can kind of understand him in the sense that I can understand that he's an agent of chaos, but who really knows why he's doing what he does. Yet he's a great villain, because he makes you afraid of what he'll do. In that sense Obadiah seems good to me since he has a real impressive dark side which is shown off in the terrorist dealing scene.

I know this comment is 5 years old, but I gotta give my 2 cents. The difference is that the whole point of the Joker is that you can't understand him. The point of Obadiah is literally in his moniker, he's an iron monger. Nando's version makes far more sense for a character who personifies the military industrial complex.

Here’s how I would rewrite the Iron Man trilogy. IM1: relatively the same, but have the villain be Justin Hammer. He would be a competitor that leads Tony to try to constantly one up him. This would lead to the desert scenes, which are relatively unchanged. Somehow, Tony will learn of hammers involvement in his capture, and that he is trying to make a suit of armor that would obliterate Stark Industries. This leads Tony to make the original suit to escape his captors. When he gets home he tells Pepper about the secret plot. She is worried, but thinks that Stark industries should stop trying to one up Hammer Tech. Eventually tony gets the modern Iron Man armor, and uses it to take out the terrorists from before. When Tony gets back from this encounter, he announces that Stark Industries will no longer be making weapons. Once Hammer sees this he decides to take the OG Iron man armor an make his own version: the Detroit Steel. He eventually crashes Tony’s house with the massive armor and Tony has to quick get his armor before he is killed. This all leads to a massive fight between Iron man and Detroit Steel. At one point Detroit says “ When you made that change, I just took your place. I’m the war monger now.” It ends with Tony sabotaging the Detroit Steel, imprisoning Justin Hammer, and declaring that he is Iron Man. End credits stays same, but a Mid credit scene would set up the next iron man movie showing Justin meeting his cell mate: whiplash. IM2. Keep whiplash as the main villain, but change several key story elements. This story would be about the sins of the past, and letting go of past offenses while also using those offenses to learn what to do for the future. Whiplash hates the Starks because they screwed over his ancestors. He uses the recent events of IM1 to make his own weapon: a series of electrical whips. He catches Tony off guard at a Galla or something, where he threatens to kill mor of his investors and guests. Tony suits up with the briefcase suit and beats Whiplash. The victory is short lived, as whiplash damaged Tony’s arc reactor. Tony realizes that he is dying and has only a few days to live. This would bring up Tony’s alcoholism and his reckless nature. At one point Tony is watching an old recording of Howard Stark and it goes the same direction as the original, minus tony making a new element and Howard mentions the Vanko family. He claims they were the best workers he ever had, but they tried to swindle him. So he fired them, without knowledge of their newborn son. This is what tony uses to convince Ivan about his parents. Whiplash dies because of a malfunction of his arc reactor knock off.The movie ends with whiplash accidentally dying in the hands of Tony. In his last moments, Whiplash forgives Tony for his past mistakes. IM3 this would loosely follow the Armor Wars comic storyline. No extremis. This would start with a broadcast from the Mandarin claiming that he is the one who will bring down modern America. Tony ingnores this for a while, but his best friend (Rhody) would have a close call and would have an injury involving his legs. This is where war machine would come in. Tony debates whether or not he should check out this terrorist, when one of his amors starts to fight him. He disables it, but the armor ends up flying away. As Tony investigates, he finds that all of his armors are missing. He wonders why this is, when a peculiar message plays on his screen: “I’ve had my eye on you for a while, Mr Stark. You may wonder where your technology has gone. I have it. I will use your power to control the world. You want them? Come and get them.” Tony starts to try and track his suits, but they are spread all over the world. He decides to take them down one by one, all while Rhody has been getting worse and worse. He needs an iron man suit. Eventually, Tony gets a prototype suit and flys it down to Rhody’s hospital. Just before Rhody dies, Tony gives the doctors the prototype suit. They use it to save Rhody’s life and it gives him the powers of iron man. Just before Tony leaves the hospital, he gets this message: “ I see you think you have what it takes to beat me. I have an army. You have a prototype. I will crush you.” This leads to the big finale: Tony and Rhody taking down every suit tony ever made. They find the Mandarin’s hideout and arrest him, leading to the mid credits scene, where we find out that the Mandarin has been getting weapons and tech from Hammer Tech. Hammer would say something like “I see that our funds have been going to a good cause. Maybe I should start looking for others who might fair better from my work. Someone like AIM.” “Who the hell is AIM?” “Stark’s about to find out real soon.” I would also have an Iron Man 4 before Avengers Age of Ultron, just to help with that movie’s themes. It would be about Tony having to rescue pepper from AIM and the extremis program. The central theme would be that Tony can’t control everything, even if he wants to. These are just my personal rewrites. If you agree plz like, and comment your own rewrites! I would love to here how you would rewrite these movies.

Again you're completely right. But I think the reason they went with Obadiah being just a big bad instead of a baddie with relatable motivations was because I think the way you've ordered here would maybe be too much of a political statement regarding the use of weapons. Which for this disney owned franchise which was meant to set a precedent for a larger series with family appeal, maybe would have been too risky. OR maybe they just aren't as good a writer as you which is entirely possible.

The only reason Lee Pace and Djimon Hunsou weren't wasted in their roles as Ronan and Korvath is because they're due to make another appearance in he upcoming Captain Marvel movie

I like most of it, but I think Tony has to renounce weapons in the middle if Stane is to both be more sympathetic AND still turn so violently against him by the end. That initial swerve sets them down different paths, and ultimately leads to their confrontation. I'm surprised you haven't done a video about how the DCEU would be better if Zod lived and became the Vegeta of the series. That's something I think about everytime MoS is even mentioned around me.

To get that, you'd need Zod that 1)cares about Krypton much more then shown in a movie; 2)find out about Lois being pregnant from Kal thus proving that humans and kryptonians are subspecies then can procreate together; 3)meet either enhanced human or human, who can beat him - either classical Lex or Vandal Savage; 4)get a full spoon of his own treatment by someone, who's stronger; 5)add his own revenge subplot against Brainiac. You can move 5 into the top priority in fact.

Unrelated but my one change I would make to Infinity War in a similar vein to change a villain would be making Thanos aware that destroying 50% of life would include himself. Thanos is so dedicated to his cause that he is willing to accept that there is a 50/50 chance of himself dying or living with half of the world as well. His only plan after using the stones and living was to just sit down and appreciate his victory anyway so I think it would make more sense and show how dedicated he is to his cause

I love how Obadiah was handled in the _Ironman: Armored Adventures_ cartoon. He was super crooked in that show but it showed that his position as CEO was precarious and he was desperate for Ironman tech to keep his job. When he lost it and he got in the Iron Mongor armor, his daughter even lampshades his dumb plan by asking him what he plans to do: Stay in that armor forever? That cartoon was so darn good.

iron man honestly feels like 2 separate movies. they could have made the ten ring ppl the villain and then had an obadiah twist in the next movie, having obadiah be an at least semi-trustable character in the first movie would make him being a villain more surprising and high-stakes

There's no intro other than a quick premise, there's no "Hit that like button" in the beginning, there's no "Today we're gonna talk about *topic of video that was already covered in thumbnail and the reason you clicked on the video*....but first..." No, you just get right to it, and you don't stop until the video is over. Everything from the simple thumbnail all the way through to the end of the video is streamlined for the exact content I click on your videos for, and I can't stress how much I appreciate you for that. And you being good at designing and editing your videos doesn't just serve aesthetic purposes; it lends credence to points your trying to get across in your videos. Could you imagine trying to make the point that changing a scene in a movie would improve it, while having horrendous editing and the usual content creator cadence? You'd have a tough time selling your ideas, I imagine. Thanks for all the hard work, Nando. I really love your videos.

Obadiah is jealous of Tony, Obadiah considers himself responsible for the company, he says in the film that he relegated the company from nowhere, and only then did Tony come and got the credit. I think it's cool that jealousy, if his hatred was just commercial, it would not make sense for him to want to kill Tony, Obadiah is practically Tony's uncle, if he did not have personal hatred for Tony, it would be too hard to believe that he wanted to kill Tony in the end. Envy is an essential part of this story, if you take it away it would be empty and the villain's motivation would not seem natural.

What if obidiah even rescued tony from the terrorists, giving him the opportunity to be one of the first people tony sees, and giving tony reason to be thankful, but tony rejects obidiah going into his new villainous persona. That would be equally or more interesting.

Obadiah and Tony differ because when they both put on their respective Iron Man suits, only Tony has the heart, literally. But the heart is what gives Tony compassion, and allows him to better the world. It is this reaching out to other people that makes a corporation good, because they aren't heartless normally. It's when they don't have to worry about consumers because of how indirect the business is that bad things happen, so Tony's extension to the consumers is indicative of how to behave as a business man without you being bailed out by governments.

Man, I agree that Obadiah could have been improved, but I think the press conference where Tony announces his plans to stop weapon manufacturing should have stayed in the middle of the movie as to draw a line between Tony and Obadiah. Plus I don't completely understand how Obadiah would get remnants of Mark I, if he didn't cooperate with Ten Rings in the first place? Anyway, I always appreciate your take on comic book movies. I think it’s less that Obadiah SHOULDNT have worked with the terrorists, but more that he should’ve had more of a reason for doing so than just wanting full control of the company. Maybe he even would’ve suspected that Tony would pull a move like shutting down the weapons division, and would’ve wanted him out of the picture before it happened. If the motivation is strong enough, I think working with terrorists is a great indicator of how corrupt Obadiah, and by extension the weapons industry at large, can be. Great video though, I love how intuitive your understanding of what makes a compelling script is :D

The dialog you made between Obadiah and Tony from 5:06 to 6:08 was excellent. Since Obadiah was the one to take over Stark Industries after Howard Stark was killed by the Winter Soldier. And then became the second in command because Tony grew old enough. Makes Obadiah look at Tony like he is still a kid. The way the dialog is made shows this. Especially the line "We'll take the branding off, will that make you feel better?" It is like you are compromising for a child. It doesn't fix the problem but it masks the name of Stark making him feel less guilty. +1

I love this version of Iron Man and I think the reason that the movie turned out the way it did and not like how Nando would write them is that apparently, the script for Iron Man keep changing during filming and Jeff Bridges said he didn't even know that he was going to die at the end of the film until they were shooting the scene. I think had they put more thought and time into it, Nando's version would've been the actual movie.
