Hi Thomas, Great effort educating the newlings! Animations can absolutely help to give insight in what is actually hapening inside a woofer. However in my opinion you may have oversimplified it a bit. In an underhung construction, the voicecoil is actually shorter than the magnetic gap height. The animation showed a voicecoil that is still longer than the magnatic gap, which by definition is overhung. Decreasing the coil length in this example would only mean less Xmax or otherwise losing control sooner rather than later. The diameter of the VC doesn't have anything to do with being overhung or underhung, neither does the amount of magnets determine the height of the magnatic gap. This is determined by the height of the top plate and matching pole piece. (a long voicecoil is heavy and thereforre lowers effiency, a large magnet stack can improve BL to regain some efficiency) Although it may be more technical, if a followup is comming, please include a visual representation of Xmax for both underhung and overhung designs.

Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, I had to keep things simple for a simple explanation. Like I said there is more to it, and it was a lot to squeeze into 3 minutes... originally was supposed to be 2 minutes but no way I could do that.

Have 2 pair of underhung speakers, both sound amazing.

Explanation is unclear. Underhung voice coil means that the coil is shorter than the front plate. And liinear excursion means that: 1. In case of overhung coil front plate is fully within the range of coil wire. 2. In case of underhung coil the coil itself is completely inside the space between the ends of the front plate.

I simplified things for time, but I did have an underhung driver as a reference for my examples... driver construction. Does differ model to model. Thanks for the comment!
@Herman-f9m8 күн бұрын
That second illustration is not an underhung voicecoil. Overhung and underhung refer to whether or not the voicecoil hangs out the magnetic gap. When the voicecoil hangs out, that's overhung. When it doesn't, it's underhung. Neither of these illustrations shows an underhung coil.
@zarboaudioprojects14308 күн бұрын
The illustrations were to show the difference between the long voice coil extending far outside the magnetic gap, and the short voice coil staying (mostly) inside the gap... I used a known (underhung) driver to model off of. It's not a perfect illustration, sure, but I think it adequately illustrates the difference. Thanks for the comment.

The video is WRONG. Both examples, the over hung voice coil and the 'under hung' voice coil in the drawings are over hung. An over hung voice coil is longer than the magnetic gap. But an under hung voice coil is SHORTER than the magnetic gap. In both drawings the voice coil was longer than the gap.
@zarboaudioprojects14306 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I think you're maybe looking a bit too close. The magnetic lines are there to give a rough idea of where the 'bulk' of the magnetic force is located.

@@zarboaudioprojects1430 Sorry but the drawing for the under hung coil is over hung
@zarboaudioprojects14306 ай бұрын
@@nobelstone9714 Okay, I won't argue. My drawing isn't perfect, I agree -- but it does demonstrate the basic idea.... and it was taken basically from a known 'Underhung' driver. Thanks for the comment.

@@nobelstone9714 yeah underhung is when the vc doesn't leave the magnetic gap but then the magnetic gap is less focused? So less bl, then what s good for? Even bl curve?
