Can you expand just a bit on your awning setup? I agree with you on the mid height rack to keep tent below the cab, but then awnings like that are always going to be too low to stand under. Do you have some footage or pics of your setup with the awning deployed? Especially being a 270 awning that I assume goes around the back of the truck, I would think that height would pose many problems when deployed? Thanks!

This is such a good question... sorry I didn’t address. So, I have the Batwing from Rhino Rack... it isn’t freestanding and has adjustable height legs that fold down. I’m 6’4” for reference... so I deploy the legs and angle the whole awning up from the truck at an angle where a foot or two from the truck I can stand up straight. The down side is if it is raining the waters drains toward the truck... but that really isn’t that bad. My long term plan is I am fabbing Odom brackets to get it a bit higher to slope away from the truck.

Before roof top tents were super popular I'd just inflate a mattress in my Tacoma's bed with the onboard AC outlet and sleep in a 0 degree rated bag. It's super convenient how fast your tent deploys and is put away, but I can't help but think you could have had dual ARB air lockers with a good compressor installed for that price. Those Crewmaxs are monstrous cabs, just sucks that Toyota won't give the smaller cab the roll down rear window. As a kid we did all our road trips in a Grand Cherokee and even put a CRT tv on the arm rest to play PS2 and slept in tents on the ground. haha, maybe the next trend will be bounce houses inflated on the trail for even more comfort.

Great lookin rig! Why did you go with the OME suspension vice let's say, the Bilstein 6112's? Also, what do you think about the OME Dakar leafpack?

The OME is true Bypass suspension so much more advanced than the 6112s… a true internal bypass shock allows adjustment on both compression and rebound. Without a bybass you can only adjust compression. This is actually a pretty big deal off-road in tough trails… it also offers different regions of damping within the suspension for better bottom out control and even too end softness for things like washboard. The leaf pack is fine but if you are going to add almost any weight to your rig you want the heavy duty leaf pack

My truck though will be my daily driver, with occasional overlanding, and occasional hauling, so I won't be doing any heavy off-roading, rock climbing, or tough/difficult trails. I will eventually buy something smaller, like the Tacoma for the heavy off-roading which will eventually be my main overlanding rig, while I keep my Tundra for my daily,. But. with the ability/capability to take it off the beaten path if needed. So, would the OME's be better option than the 6112's?

Never stated the size of the tires...just said the brand. Some say 33 inch is sufficient for overlanding and 35 is overkill which is why I'd like to know.

There is no single answer to this question. I am overlanding a Tundra in extremely rough terrain so I have 35's for extra clearance... but my truck also has a long wheelbase so 35's on A Tundra are similar to 33's on a shorter wheelbase. Most overlanders don't take on extremely rough Terrain so absolutely 33's is fine. If you plan to overland Internationally you should be VERY serious about running a Common tire size. All My videos try to teach fundamentals that then need to be applied to your unique use case.

@@OutdoorAuto Thanks for the reply Nathan. You made a point that other overlanders have made.... to keep popular tires sizes which is one of the Pro's that they named for 33's. Also they stated the weight of the tires when changing them is a struggle with 35's sometimes. They also mention that it keeps "UNSprung" rotational weight off the drivetrain. Have you felt any strain to your drive train with 35's? Probably not with 5.7 Tundra but you probably have taken a MPG hit which they also listed as a CON for 35 & a PRO for 33's. Personally I want the bigger tires(285/75R18) for extra clearance but I know I don't get off road enough to justify it.

I would never run 35’s on a shorter wheel base truck with a smaller engine. You can regear but really the only reason I go 35 is to offset the long wheelbase. With the V8 my power is still fine.

Sweet build! Is regearing necessary for running 35’s? I’ve heard issues about trans shifting and also has effects on engine rpm.

I have had no issues with 35's ( my bfg's are actually 34.5')... I put a ton of freeway miles on it and don't really have issues there either. The Tundra is actually geared pretty well for 35's... When I do 37's I will regear it to 4:88 and put in the lockers. So yeah... if you are going to 35's I wouldn't worry... just be careful with your Wheel offset so you don't rub... I run a +1MM offset rim and have no rub.

@@OutdoorAuto I have been watching your excellent videos this morning while waiting for my Tundra to arrive from the factory to start my new build. Your information is invaluable. Offset is dependent on wheel width and differs as wheel width differs. Anyway, you mentioned +1mm offset several times but did not mention what the wheel's width you are running. Are they 18"x9"? An 8" wheel with +1mm can be converted to 4.54" BS. A 9" wheel would be 5.04", so a significant difference in fitment. Thanks!!!

Basically the lift is called a 2.5 in lift... but the front has pre load that gives you some flexibility to dial it in based on the weight you are carrying in the rear. So somewhere between 2.5 - 3.

I have a 2020 tundra and I am cautious to take it offroad here in the dunes, whilst we are side sloping, and the airbags deploy, is there a kill switch, or do Toyota programme the car when in 4hi or 4Lo so that the airbags are disabled.

I believe the airbags are automatically shut off in 4LO... but if you are dune driving you will likely be in 4HI Manual shifting mode... I am not certain... but pretty certain they are active in 4HI... There are videos on how to disable the rollover curtain bags and sensors... but just FYI... I have never had issues with them in the dunes side sloping.

@@OutdoorAuto Thanks I have the same suspicion as well, and double checked the manual, which does not mention the state of the airbags in 4hi or 4lo . The older Tundras used to have a RSCA switch, which switched off the roll sensing curtain airbags, sadly this is not the case with the newer ones.

With 35's at a +20 there is a decent chance you would rub on the inside of your tire when you are turning... I haven't tested it but can't imagine it would fit... or it would be really close... How about you... have you run it... did it work? What tire brand and size?

Interesting choice moving from a 4Runner to a Tundra, especially with a family. I would’ve thought that the 4Runner with a heavy duty rack setup would’ve made more sense simply considering the family. Granted I’m not 100% sure on the size and number of things ya gotta carry for rafting

Have you seen how huge the cab is on Tundra Crewmax? Way more room for the kids... and the bed can haul way more gear and not go over the recommended payload. When I would load down the 4Runner for extended trips I ran out of room and they become gutless and slow with the extra weight... mpg tanks too.

How do you change the tire and unload the full size spare

The spare is just secured with 3 lug nuts... so you loosen/take those off and then just pull the tire off. I use a jack to get the other tire off... then swap em and go. As far as unload... they are heavy but I manage them on my own... and I will admit freely I am not the strongest guy.

A heck of a lot. The tent itself in maybe $3,000, the rack is probably around $1,200, the back bumper is a couple thousand plus the front bumper is around $600 plus a couple hundred dollar light bar in the front, Prinsu roof rack is around $800, decked drawer system is $1,500, the truck itself is around $50,000. Add all of that together not including anything in the engine or the $2,500 shocks with remote reservoirs, you get a pretty expensive rig that will last through the thick of it.

The Jerry Can mount is from Expedition-One... it is an accessory they sell with the rear bumper. It works great. Lifesaver details can be found here - amzn.to/3ocKMYa - It is an expensive water solution but it is proven. I needed something that was just proven and would work well... I like the all-in-one nature of it and that I can grab water and worry about filtering later when I have time... enables a lot of quick pullovers when water is available and then move on.

You mention that you put your 270 awning on when you know you are going to use it. Do you rack it higher than your tent or just duck down when its deployed?

Mine has legs... so I slop it away from the tent and up... makes it to where I can stand up under about 80% of it... always just set up the chairs at the low end. SOme day I may make brackets to get it higher... but it really isn't that annoying and saves on MPG and keeping weight lower... So... so far I haven't been motivated enough to figure something else out.

Awesome... excited to hear about your build. Build planning was definitely something I could have done better with. I underestimated the amount of weight for all the gear and need to swap out my Leaf springs again... with a bit of planning and research, if you know where you want to get to you can save a lot of money. I have a video on Recommended First Three Mods - Done Right that I am working on... should be in the next couple weeks. It might be helpful.

Did you not have to do a body mount chop to fit the 35's? I noticed you said you would have to for 37's that you want to get. What is the actual tire size?

The tires in the Video are 35” BFG K02s. The do not rub at all. So no BMC for 35’s

@@OutdoorAuto Awesome! People keep telling me that I will have to do a BMC if I go up to 35's. I have a 2020 TRD PRO and have been hesitant due to that. Are those 12.5 inches wide like most 35's? Other people report that it will rub and full turn on the Body mount.

@@dalephillips8250 Yes they are... everyone says the BFG's run a little small... If I remember right, when you buy their 35's they actually measure 34.5 or something... but yeah they definitely fit. with 1MM offset and a 2.5 - 3" lift all around. I have no spacers but I do use a little bit of the pre load capacity on my OME kit... but you would do that on any kit with a Tundra...

Wonder if the 35's would still fit with a stock front bumper with similar suspension and wheel offset... 🤔 Planning on getting a Tundra here in the not too distant future and trying to figure out what mods I wanna do.

@@romokid64 Good call on the side steps... I actually think my Rock sliders are the most important mod I have made on the whole truck. They are certainly the one that has saved the truck from lots of damage multiple times. Plus, even when I don't have enough clearance for an obstacle... with a good spotter and planning, I have been able to "Slide" my way through stuff.

@@OutdoorAuto precisely what I need it for. I don't do any crazy offroading but when there is an obstacle in the middle of a trail and I need to get by, that clearance truly is key. Even if it still isn't enough clearance, like you said, you just slide over. I definitely want to invest in Slider, RCI skid plate that goes from the engine block down to the Transfer case, about 1.9in front and 1in rear lift, and off road style front bumper, need something more solid... And no one is buying a Tundra for the MPG lol

What are we talking about? Front? Rear? ... strong compared to what? Weight is a big issue for me so I have to balance weight and strength.

If you are talking about the front bumper... I would tend to agree with you. However, it is strong enough to handle the winch under a full load... and it handle a deer at full speed... so... seems to be strong enough for my needs.

While the front is stronger then the OEM in which you replaced you may want to go a more custom route. Most bumpers that are made only use 636 plate steel, maybe 3/16” at best. I recently seen an ARB bumper that was damaged in shipping of all places. Yes, it will provide more protection over an OEM but if it can be damaged while being shipped it doesn’t bode well. I personally made bumpers using channel. It’s not pretty but I feel sorry for the person who rear ends me. Most people tend to get a front bumper first with out needing it due to a winch. Thankfully you do. I would suggest the rear is more important if you’re looking for protection.
