In the Land Cruiser you don't need body lift, but in some IFS 4x4s you can't fit 33s without a lot of trimming or loosing almost all the down travel of the suspension or a body lift.

TJ needs a small 1" Body lift so you can do a tummy tuck for the transfer case skid plate. so yes some overlanding rigs need a body lift.

Yeah my YJ has a 2.5 inch body lift and I love it. Still handles like a dream and the extra tire size gives me the clearance to get over the stuff I need to. My springs are flat too so when I put new springs on I'll get even more ground clearance. I think with a more complicated vehicle it gets more complicated than our 'simple' jeeps

Since so many 4wd vehicles have IFS axles not solid axles on the front. A hybrid 2" suspension, and 2" body lift is the best practical solution. Also lowering the air dam using rubber strips made from truck mud flaps will help stabilty. Remote reservoir 2.0" or 2.5" shocks help too! Sway bars are from the Brock Yates culture of SCCA road racing. Bigger shocks and decent tires on wider than factiory rims. Will typically give better handling than sway bars. Sway bars are only good on perfectly smooth pavement. Most overland roads are FAR from smooth. Had several trucks in the 70's and 80's with NO sway bar from the factory. With all the above mods. I could out run my friends in Porches, Camaros, and Corvettes. Because the bumpy roads of the real world. Made them slow down!!!

Some vehicles need a hybrid lift to operate efficiently. For example: my jeep wrangler yj has leaf springs on all 4 corners. If I go with a 4" leaf spring lift, I will have less articulation due to the high arch in the springs than my 2.5" lift currently on the vehicle. Not to mention a small body lift allows me to do a tummy tuck and get my drivetrain nearly level with my frame rails. I am by no means endorsing body lifts, but some vehicles need them to utilize what they have completely. On coil spring vehicles, suspension lifts all the way obviously.

I understand your concerns and the limitations of body lifts. But let's be cautious here with respect to our collective attitude toward them. Yes, they're cheap and yes, they are have a bad reputation. But as an overland community centered around not judging how people get outside, we will ostracize folks with certain rigs where the combination of budget and suspension design restrict their access of traditional suspension lifts. After all, suspension lifts do not increase ground clearance. Only tire size can do that. So folks with limited fender clearance can benefit greatly. Also consider vehicles with torsion bar front suspensions. Yes, lift keys are available for relative pennies, but there are inherent disadvantages that come with them including poor suspension geometry and increased wear of components such as ball joints and cv axles. Are suspension lifts generally more desirable? Of course. Should anyone judge? I don't think it's wise

I don't understand the rationale against body lifts. I'm not arguing here, I genuinely want to know. If it allows you to put bigger tires on then why isn't that good? The suspension geometry hasn't changed which is good. I'm asking because I have a 2000 4runner that I'd like to put bigger tires on but I don't want to mess around with the suspension so I could just put a 1" body lift on, and maybe do some fender trimming. Plus with IFS a suspension lift is going to limit your travel and cause cv problems beyond 1" without a diff drop, etc etc, the list goes on. The land cruiser is solid front axle, although you do need caster correction as he mentions. It would be nice to just keep the suspension as is but still be able to put in bigger tires. But a suspension lift will give you better breakover angle than a body lift which wont do anything for that.

I absolutely love my body lift. Frame showing isn't an issue as it's really tucked up stock. Let's me run 35" tires, really weren't any suspension lift options (still arent) for my truck. The body also allows FAR better access to things like spark plugs and other engine bay maintenance items. A suspension lift on my truck would leave torsion bars just as low as factory, so really, I'm not gaining any break over clearance either vs a body lift. So sometimes, a body lift is a great option! That's why I DO want a body lift on my truck! Love the videos and OB, however, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one! What works for your vehicle, won't work for everyone's vehicle!

I drive an 04' Silverado with a long bed. I used a combo lift and I use 315/70/17 tires. I will admit that it took a bit of plastic cutting and a little sheet metal messaging to clear the big tires but I know the body lift portion was a must to clear the big tires. Admittedly I am cheap but with the long wheelbase of my truck, I felt bigger tires and more lift would really assist with my break over angle. I actually like having my leveling kit and body lift combined because I lifted it for 1/10th of the price and still clear the size tires I need for the exploring I do. Any suspension kit for my truck that's more than a leveling kit will cost at least $1000 before installation. I got my 2" leveling kit and 1.5" body lift for just over $100 and it completely transformed my truck into what I needed it to be to suite my driving. Another advantage to my truck is that it's a little over built for trailering or heavy hauling, therefore the leaf springs don't need replacing with me putting more and more gear in the back. The engine never skips a beat when it's under the load I put it under with all my gear, transmission does everything you'd expect out of it, the suspension performance is great. Under the load I add, the trucks additional beef is just perfect for what I do.

Objectively, if you want more utility out of a vehicle and you really want to unlock your performance, you would benefit greatly from a 1" body lift in creating room for dual transfer cases which will give you more control in low range, you can clock your transfer cases for a better breakover angle. That one modification will allow you keep your gears for road driving and have lower low range when compared to a regear. Body lifts help in more ways than one

Awesome video on this subject. I am a full-time Overlandor living in a jeep Cherokee XJ and I do not have a lift. I always make it up to those mountain lakes. Small lift can be a good thing but remember we are out overlanding and we are not Rock crawlers.

Hybrids can be necessary for several reasons. Suspension lifts let the wheel center come up just as high as without a lift at all. If you use the lift to put on larger tires, that may mean not having enough room to tuck the upper part of that larger tire into the wheel wells. A suspension lift may be needed to correct that situation. It's not just asthetic. This is the only way to fit 35's on a 4th gen 4Runner, for instance.

Body lifts can be good to fit tummy tucks on jeeps. As well as be able to fit different transfer cases to get better lo gearing. They can also allow you to run bigger tires but a lighter rate spring which can allow for good down travel instead of massive up travel. Based off a jeep yj with leaf springs....

For me, I wanted to keep the body low and not stress the suspension too much. My solution was to change from 235/75R15 tires to 315/70R17tires and wheels to give me more clearance with only a 2" body lift. The problem was that the larger wheels and tires caused them to hit the fender wells and the suspension in the front. To fix the problem I instead cut and re-welded the fender well to about 8" larger than the original ('99 GMC Yukon SLE 4wd). This gave me the clearance I needed and the lower center of gravity I wanted.

I have a 6 inch drop Bracket Suspension lift on 35's and it runs pretty well in the wild. 6speed manual and i am about to do a gear change and some rock sliders and i'll be complete my suspension lift was only $2500 and isn't some ROUGH COUNTRY BS .I have a FABTECH lift with quality parts was gonna go with Calmini but they had too many issues with getting the parts to the customer 2016 Nissan Pro4X

Seems a lot of people think the offroading world is limited to Jeep and Toyota, with their limitless suspension options. Some of us drive discontinued IFS vehicles, with little-to-no aftermarket support, where you're limited to t-bar adjustments for a couple of inches. Beyond that, you better be good at welding because you'll need to engineer your own setup. A small body lift can be your only option for getting a hair more tire clearance (which yields a hair more ground clearance).

I have a 1.75in body lift on my Montero. Stock, 33s fit with a little trimming. With the BL i fit 35s easy and youre able to get more travel out of it by trimming bump stops and whatnot. It also helps a lot when working on the vehicle. At the moment, I am doing a 5.3 swap so the extra room is awsome. I eventually want to do a solid axle swap, but the 35s and BL help a lot offroad.

A body lift on stock suspension will never work as well as a full suspension system. Now, if you need a bit of extra clearance after you did a suspension lift, then a small body lift is ok.

@@krover01 A BL with 35s on my vehicle works better than a suspension lift and 33s. Being that a suspension lift is about an inch and doesnt give much lift or articulation over the stock setup. And the front is torsion bar so theres not much to do there. Tire size makes a massive difference in approach/departure/breakover angles. Again this is on my vehicle. If I owned something where aftermarket parts were readily available i would have bought a suspension lift, but since theres not, I bought a body lift and gained 3 inches of diff clearance. Which helps immensely offroad.

I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss body lifts. When used strategically with the right vehicle architecture, they can work very well. For example, a small body lift (1.5") and cross member replacement on an 86-95 Toyota IFS truck can net about 3" of improved tcase clearance and allows the gas tank to be lifted even with the frame and easily armored. This is almost the clearance benefit of a 4" bracket lift with way less CoG change and none of the alignment/durability issues. With many IFS configurations, there is also no loss of suspension performance by forgoing the suspension lift. The other thing to consider is the limits on travel with a suspension lift. In many cases, the suspension up travel doesn't equal the change in ride height - especially when trying to clear large tires. For example, the higher FJ80 suspension lifts usually drop the bump stops quite a bit and 80 series suspension architecture also acts to limit flex (darn radius arms). In other words, increased suspension lifts can quickly hit a point where the CoG increases linearly, cost and complexity increase exponentially, and the suspension performance lags or even regresses due to excessive spring rates hampering flex. Not to mention intractable issues with high shaft, radius arm, and control arm angles. That is the point where a modest hybrid lift and a little wheel well trimming likely matches or potentially beats the performance of a higher suspension lift.

@@krover01 - I agree that sway bars are not necessary. They were designed for the road race circuit. And were deveopex at a time when shock absorbers were of a different quality than today. I had a 1979 Dodge B200 van that I lifted 2" for fitting 31x10.50-15 tires. I put 2.0 monotube shocks all around. For fuel economy and better highway engine cooling. I added a 6" air dam made from 2 layers of cut truck mud flaps. The van did NOT come from the factory with sway bars. The van handled excellent with the air dam. And the air dam was flexible over rocks and stuff. On a different B200 van. I put 30x9.50-15 tires with the 2.0 shocks. Still no sway bar. Handled beautiful. 99% of my driving has always been on road. Even with my current 4x4 truck and SUV's. And the shocks matter more than any sway bar!

@@gen1c8rs88 Suspension lifts dont change your ground clearance to the bottom of your diff. Only bigger tires do. The 315/75-16 is a 35" tire. My 35x12.50 tires are actually 34.8" Most tires are slightly smaller than the advertised height.

Suburbans need a small (1 inch) body lift in order to increase the approach angle for both the front and rear of the vehicle. I also notice that in the earlier models (1978 etc...) that a 4 inch suspension lift allows the suspension to operate and does not adversely affect the ride characteristics excessively. Having said that I also suggest that for normal driving and light off road adventures in a Suburban they are very good vehicles. I travel to places where most people do not go (fire towers and such) and those roads are usually not maintained and were cur through by people just driving over the barren/ rocky ground to get there. Most of these towers were put up when the main transportation for the outback or overland was horses and donkeys. I do for the most part agree with you that the normal street vehicle does not need a radical lift and a massive body lift. If I was nor going to places like I do I would probably leave my Suburban bone stock for ride height and ease of operation or getting in and out of.

I just recently bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with a Rough Country 4.5” lift. I’m currently running 32” tires. I had a stock Liberty with a lot smaller tire. I was at one point told the 04 kJ wasn’t a good platform because it wasn’t tall enough. Is my 4.5 lift to high?

i rather have a 2.5 inch suspension lift, a small 1/2 to 1 inch body lift, and 35 inch tires, than a 3 inch suspension lift w/ 35 inch tires (and a whole lot of cutting and tubing), to preserve down travel and up travel in IFS vehicles. So basically your suspension needs depend on the type of vehicle you have.

I think it depends on the vehicle- it's an interesting discussion. I did a bodylift to avoid tire on fender contact- I've got a 2nd gen Xterra and I've got 35OD tires on a titanswapped rig, but the only way I could avoid the fender contact without massive cutting was the bodylift. I have to admit I don't really recommend it unless you Have to have a long-travel suspension and large tires. Obviously being long-traveled (using titan components, which makes it a little more OE friendly than other long-travel kits) 35's isn't exactly a crazy tire size as long as you make sure you regear. I cycle around 11" of wheel travel with radflo 2.5 RR's and aftermarket UCAs, (titan OE LCAs and titan OE CVs) so I've got the suspension performance, but as mentioned before, I want to avoid contact with the fender. Obviously I know the cost expense of the shocks- I could have bought a cheap car or two for the new suspension and coilovers/shocks but it's worth it. Nissan wasn't friendly to Xterra owners, the smallest rim is 16" we can use, and the usual size rims are 17". 35OD on 17" tires gives a very reasonable amount of sidewall.

Take a look at the OME BP-51. I did my own research, they were way better for what I wanted. (#1 comfort, #2 weight and performance). Fully adjustable compression/rebound. I’ve had em for about a year... best mod I’ve done so far.

Are those Bilstein 5100s? A friend of mine in Colorado recommended me those with OME springs for my 80 since he runs the same combo on his 4runner. You're the first guy I see with Bilstein dampers on an 80, how do they stack up vs OME?

if youve ever worked on a jeep without a body lift and one with a body lift you might think different. about an inch and a half is the max, the rest should be suspension lift

This doesn't apply to all vehicles. The Nissan Frontier without doing a monster lift like the silly picture you showed, does not respond to a mild lift. The suspension travel and articulation is best in its factory configuration. Yes some spring rate changes for added weight can help. For the Frontier a body lift with all the available products out there can be the best functional lift to put 34"s on and overland.

Makes a video saying why you dont want a body lift then in the comments he says theres a place for body lifts lol. I did a combination of both. 3 inch suspension lift and 2 inch body lift. The 2 inch body lift allowed for larger tires which means bigger footprint which means more offroad capable. With wheels with a negative offset made a wider stance so the higher lift made little difference to the COG. To each their own though, whatever gets people out there wheeling and having fun

The only real way of getting ground clearance is larger wheels. No matter how much suspension you out in your dif stays where it is. Body lift allows for that extra arch clearance. There are huge downsides to to 4+ inch suspension lifts it’s not as basic as “oh yeah do a body lift instead of suspension, that’s not what they are for 🤦♂️

Folks worry about raising 40% of the center of gravity 1”, but are pumped to raise 90% of the COG 3” or more with a suspension or spacer lift. 🤦🏻♂️
