It is a floating vegetation and it moves around the wind can blow it out and you can takeoff in your boat but when you come back the wind has blown it back in and will choke off your impeller and overheat your boat motor. I live in Louisiana and we have that crap every where lol
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
This makes SO much sense! Can't believe we hadn't thought of that. That is absolutely what it is. I forgot to mention that the lake doesn't rise and fall at the same time. The water appears and disappears in patches which makes sense for the vegetation to be moving around sporadically. Thank you!

I don't know if you guys been to Rivera Maya, it's near Cancun, the wife and I were there for our honeymoon. It was beautiful, but abit of a tourist trap. Check it out if you guys are interested. Hope it helps. Fyi, if you have "nats (small flies" in your van, you can get rid of them by 1. getting a plastic cup 2. apple ciidar vinear 3. fill it in the cup about 2/3 the way up 4. put clear wrap on top of cup and rubber band around the cup 5. final step, poke holes on top of the plastic wrap (in the morning, you'll see the tiny nats/flies floating on top of the liquid and no more flies in your van. Hope it helps. :)

FYI, there is a place call, "Sandy vans" in Oregon that can modefy vans to increase the clearance height, change it to to 4 wheel drive and add a wrench to the front bumper so you guys don't get stuck in the mud if you intend to be off rid and park in muddy areas. Hope it helps.

Well driven Ben, just a tip, if you drop the tire pressures it lengthens the footprint and improves grip, all terrains are designed with stronger side walls to allow for this. with the tyre being more flexible when lower pressure (around 20 psi for what you were doing) is also allows the tyres to shed the mud rather than filing the tred. Always then re-inflate when on hard surface as the tyres will heat up on tarmac. Get yourself an ARB compressor and rapid deflator to make life easier. Stay safe. PS. Glad to hear you're felling more yourself Ches x
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
Thank you 🙏 And yes, we have a compressor kit that we've never used. We didn't realise how bad the mud was until we were in the middle of it all, and by then just wanted out of there. Thankfully giving it some welly was enough to get out of it but if we get into anything worse than that, the compressor kit will come out 🙏

Superb bit of driving Ben , getting out of those mud flats , have you ever thought of becoming an hgv driver , and driving a 44 tonner for a living , you would make a fantastic lorry driver , fantastic bit of driving . The piece and quiet at the beginning of the video, you truly needed , it helps no end believe me , 2 years ago our 11 year old at the time , disabled daughter had a cardiac arrest due to sepsis and was in a coma for 10 Days, we both struggled and even now get flashbacks , but I didn’t want to speak or see anyone, and the piece and quiet and pulling myself away from people and crowds really helped with the pain , so I can truly understand why you feel far better after a while in the quiet . Glad you’re both smiling now .

After a potencially serious problem with the rain but resolved by Ben's driving skills you had the greatest enjoyment and fun in San Miguel, that is great. At the opening you said that it looked a bit like the countryside in the U.K., l have never been there but the place did look similar from pictures l have seen. There are a lot oEuropean overlanders in Mexico, mostly Spanish and Argentinians, some American and Canadian, l think connecting with them will make your trip easier, most of them speak English. Haven't read all the comments so apologies if anyone else has answered. Where did all the water go? Some very large lakes & lagoons are actually slightly tidal. They are so large that they're affected by gravitational pull. So at times there is more water on one end than the other, not by a massive amount but enough to make the water "disappear " for a while.
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
I should have said in the video but it's definitely not tidal, it's not large enough. Also the water appears and disappears in patches and at irregular intervals. One person did comment and we think it's the most likely - the plants are water-borne and float around, so sometimes they clump together and sometimes the wind blows them apart. This makes so much sense and I'm almost certain that's what causes the water to look like it's disappearing!

Your disappearing lake question, I was thinking maybe something to do with tides, then I looked on a map where Guanajuato was, and now that really looks very, very unlikely. Maybe it's some sort of geothermal phenomenon similar to a geyser.
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
Yep it's not tidal! We are way too far and it's not big enough. Such a mystery as it's only patches of water too! Not the whole lake level. It's driving me mad 😂
@Kiwi-Macca Жыл бұрын
@@OverlandingSophia it could be a seiche, but I think that's only very large lakes and a small level change "If you have observed water sloshing back and forth in a swimming pool, bathtub, or cup of water, you may have witnessed a small-scale seiche (pronounced saysh). On a much grander scale, the same phenomenon occurs in large bodies of water such as bays and lakes. A seiche may occur in any semi- or fully-enclosed body of water. Seiches are typically caused when strong winds and rapid changes in atmospheric pressure push water from one end of a body of water to the other. When the wind stops, the water rebounds to the other side of the enclosed area. The water then continues to oscillate back and forth for hours or even days. In a similar fashion, earthquakes, tsunamis, or severe storm fronts may also cause seiches along ocean shelves and ocean harbors."

Mexico really is a trying place, you two have your work cut out. Loving the videos, inspired to get our van over there in the future
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
It's very different from what we're used to, but it's so rewarding at the same time. It's a blast for van life, and we just make life difficult for ourselves by insisting on going to these little colonial towns 😂

@@OverlandingSophia it may be more difficult but you always find those little gems off the beaten track and away from the tourists 😊

Good to see you guys. Could the lake level be related to a hydro electric plant of some sort. I’ve seen lakes before where they open huge gates and allow the water to flow through turbines to generate electricity then pump it back again when electricity demand is low at night.
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
I should have specified that the water rises and disappears in patches, rather than all at once. Someone said they have it where they live and as its a water-bound plant, it's the plant moving around with the wind. When it clumps together, you can't see the water, and when it blows apart, patches appear. Makes so much sense!
@diamondsontour Жыл бұрын
@@OverlandingSophia Ah right - that makes sense. Guess I was overthinking it a little!

Kudos on the driving, Wow! I would have been on the floor in a fetal position. I wonder If those flowers open and close at different times during the day, like a pray plant closing at sundown and opening at sunrise? That may explain it
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
We did think that! But it's only patches of the lake so we weren't sure. Cannot find an answer anywhere!
@mgrizz2386 Жыл бұрын
I read that it has high buoyancy and mobility, which allows it to be blown from the lake to the other. So perhaps it's wind and currents. The plant float on the water. Interesting....
