Agree! My front locker made the most drastic performance gain by far. Time for larger ramps!

I personally would pick articulation, because for my driving style, I can use the suspension every day and would only be benefiting from a locker once in a while. (coming from a guy who had put a rear locker on my 2.5 gen tundra).

Lockers and gears first always. I put ARBs and 488's front and rear in my V8 4Runner. Best decision I ever made.

I got a gladiator Rubicon after like 20 offroad vehicles. Lockers get you through a lot, but if you get your belly stuck on a rock, the lockers won't do anything. When I lifted it, and threw 37s on, I'm still running into the belly pan issue, but I can get over more stuff without the lockers engaged. For most people in modern vehicles, I'll say suspension first because these rigs are bigger. If you have say a 90s 4runner, I might say lockers first. Recovery is what I'd say to go for first as 95% of the time you're on the road. Get the armor, winch and bumpers. Then suspension so you can dial it in for your normal weight. And finally get lockers.

Idk how scientific the test was. The truck had bumpers and modified fenders. Also the suspension although limited with straps definitely had been modified. Still enjoying the content and it does at least ask a valid question. I’d go suspension first and than look into a locker. Just my .02

I have a 96 Jeep ZJ lifted only 2" stock springs with spacer, Rubicon Express Superflex arms, Bilstein dampeners the proper length for my setup, no front sway bar with only a tired Trac-Loc LSD in the rear and bump stops to keep the tyres off the fenders. It articulates GREAT and it take me everywhere 33 inch tall all-terrains well take you except I'm only running 31's!
@trailrunnah8886Ай бұрын
Yes! I used to have a 97 ZJ. Even with mild mods they have a ton of flex. Not like my 4Runner with it's little T-Rex arm front suspension, haha.

In my experience lockers, then tires, trim to fit, maximize suspension travel, minimal lift. At some point a winch makes sense, but I have not installed mine yet, it’s too busy sitting on my shelf.

I don’t know if you cover this in the video or not but a vehicle with lockers generally is a completely open diff when unlocked which is inferior to offroad vehicles that don’t have lockers generally have limited slip rear ends which will fair better than an unlocked locking diff. To really test this it needs to be done on solid front and rear axles to actually be able to get extreme flex out of the front with a disconnected sway bar and proper suspension with a limited slip rear and. And then the vehicle with lockers to not disconnect front sway bars and stock suspension
@beyondthispoint5557Ай бұрын
I am going for suspension first. Why? It will be of the biggest benefit most of the time. My travel tends to involve towing when with the family so the suspension will be set up to assist with that. When solo, there is no towing but there is a fair bit of weight (spares, etc). There is some off road exploration but in general, we stick to logging roads or remote northern gravel stuff that you would find in Northern Quebec (easy to get to from home).
@ProjectAjaxАй бұрын
Is there any way to get you guys to test on some F150s for suspension testing?
@DirtGarageАй бұрын
Have not watched the video yet. Buuuut, if I where to go back in time and my 1989 Pickup was still stock, I 100% would do lockers before SAS. ATLEAST THE REAR. Articulation means nothing if you don't have traction to use it. Now pretty much everything I build has lockers in the first phase of build plan! Ok I'll watch the video now 😂
@DirtGarageАй бұрын
Well looks like it did pretty good with no lockers and just the flex addition. Buuuut, I'd argue parking lot and ramps is not a real world scenereo, need some lose dirt and rocks to make the lockers really shine! Agreed, best performance is both, great video!
@OverlandOutfittersАй бұрын
For sure! Though I would say this is pretty accurate for somewhere like Moab. When traction is loose, even with all 4 tires on the ground, lockers will win every time.
@brycesmith68Ай бұрын
How much does it cost to get both lockers vs that amount of additional droop?
@JamesMcNamara-j1gАй бұрын
There are good lunch box lockers you can get for a lot less than a lift plus the supporting mods needed to make it work.
@OverlandOutfittersАй бұрын
The lockers with installation will typically cost more for the front and rear, than a shock relocation and shocks for the rear of a Tacoma, but if you include the price of the front suspension as well, it's probably pretty close to equal, given you are using a high quality shock.
@trailrunnah8886Ай бұрын
Depends what you're doing with it. There's definitely a benefit to a mild lift, but if you're comparing lockers against a high dollar "long travel" suspension, definitely lockers. Even the "long travel" IFS Yotas have less articulation than a $1000 XJ with no front swawbar.

Since they are arbitrary measurements, why not go for the center of the hub off the ground? Just a suggestion.
@OverlandOutfitters17 күн бұрын
Harder to measure because the ramp and tire were in the way so it wouldn't be a straight line, meaning it wouldn't be as accurate.
@bremer12345Ай бұрын
lol.. It was a good try BUT (to state the obvious) sort-of-a fail too. Unfortunately you need bigger and bolted down RTI ramps.. let try that one more time!

Suspension means larger tires, so Suspension first then carry recovery gear.
@smileyguyzАй бұрын
Recovery gear, tires, and THEN suspension imo. A stock vehicle will go a lot farther than most people think, but you will need that recovery gear. As far as tires go, they've made the biggest capability increase on my Frontier so far. I was going to do 33s regardless of whether or not I lift it, so having to make room for them was no big deal. If I lifted my truck, I'd still have to make room for them in their up travel. As far as suspension, a few inches of extra clearance and some nice shocks are all most really need. But to be fair, I built my truck for capability first and looking cool second. Most people modify vehicles primarily with cosmetics in mind.
