That's an on road truck that sometimes goes off road like less than 5% of total miles being off road and should be set up so basically for the road

Thanks, so glad you made the point about long down hill breaking. I planning my build now and ready to spend 20 to 30k but Powerbrake price surprised me, however it's a must. Not going to be that guy that only buy bling. I may install a Thermistor on each caliper and monitor it with an Arduino.

The other thing about waiting til you can afford something - sometimes it's an impulse buy or thought that goes away. Instead of buying so many things you think you'll use, then don't, you save money and can spend it on the things you actually want to invest in.

A future goal in a build is to make the cab water tight. Sure you can plug holes but how much pressure can a door seal take? Tesla pressurizes there battery pack to keep water out.

Great video, I have the same alignment machine in my home shop, what app are you using to run it on a tablet? Would be grateful for any info, I can’t find the compatible mobile platform or app, although the system clearly has the capability. (I’m in Africa, so no help from the agent who sold it unfortunately)

I got a gladiator Rubicon after like 20 offroad vehicles. Lockers get you through a lot, but if you get your belly stuck on a rock, the lockers won't do anything. When I lifted it, and threw 37s on, I'm still running into the belly pan issue, but I can get over more stuff without the lockers engaged. For most people in modern vehicles, I'll say suspension first because these rigs are bigger. If you have say a 90s 4runner, I might say lockers first. Recovery is what I'd say to go for first as 95% of the time you're on the road. Get the armor, winch and bumpers. Then suspension so you can dial it in for your normal weight. And finally get lockers.

all categories should be thankful to each other for making parts cheaper due to economy of scale. I love talking rigs and mods. However other than the vehicles I've Zero in common most of the bro's, toxic politics, and what nature means.

Idk how scientific the test was. The truck had bumpers and modified fenders. Also the suspension although limited with straps definitely had been modified. Still enjoying the content and it does at least ask a valid question. I’d go suspension first and than look into a locker. Just my .02

Not trying to be a Dobinson apologist but their company seems to be aimed more at vehicles with more weight on them, durable, meant for medium to low speeds, and rebuildable.
@GettingAGrip2088 күн бұрын
I don’t know if you cover this in the video or not but a vehicle with lockers generally is a completely open diff when unlocked which is inferior to offroad vehicles that don’t have lockers generally have limited slip rear ends which will fair better than an unlocked locking diff. To really test this it needs to be done on solid front and rear axles to actually be able to get extreme flex out of the front with a disconnected sway bar and proper suspension with a limited slip rear and. And then the vehicle with lockers to not disconnect front sway bars and stock suspension

As most things in life, you get what you pay for. Not very surprised at Wescott results. Exactly why we hate spacers even if you never plan to go off-road
@eriknash87839 күн бұрын
Not stock tires or pressures. Tire setup has a massive impact on control and feel in these conditions. 5100’s they say they are glued to the ground and we can see the tire loosing contact consistently. Dobinsons they say it skipping and they have less control but no sign of loss of contact with the ground. Not sure the subjectivity of these two clowns means anything.

I originally built the ramps bigger, but then it wouldn't fit under the slider of the Tacoma, so I had to cut it shorter!

I personally would pick articulation, because for my driving style, I can use the suspension every day and would only be benefiting from a locker once in a while. (coming from a guy who had put a rear locker on my 2.5 gen tundra).
@JamesMcNamara-j1g11 күн бұрын
In my experience lockers, then tires, trim to fit, maximize suspension travel, minimal lift. At some point a winch makes sense, but I have not installed mine yet, it’s too busy sitting on my shelf.

Great video! Very informative! I am currently dealing with something bent on the 2nd gen Tacoma that caught air and flattened the cam tabs. I'm thinking it's a steering knuckle. JD fabrication in Escondido is about 10 minutes away from me. They do great kits. I might be needing one soon. Great jobs guys!

Depends what you're doing with it. There's definitely a benefit to a mild lift, but if you're comparing lockers against a high dollar "long travel" suspension, definitely lockers. Even the "long travel" IFS Yotas have less articulation than a $1000 XJ with no front swawbar.
@DirtGarage12 күн бұрын
Have not watched the video yet. Buuuut, if I where to go back in time and my 1989 Pickup was still stock, I 100% would do lockers before SAS. ATLEAST THE REAR. Articulation means nothing if you don't have traction to use it. Now pretty much everything I build has lockers in the first phase of build plan! Ok I'll watch the video now 😂
@DirtGarage12 күн бұрын
Well looks like it did pretty good with no lockers and just the flex addition. Buuuut, I'd argue parking lot and ramps is not a real world scenereo, need some lose dirt and rocks to make the lockers really shine! Agreed, best performance is both, great video!
@OverlandOutfitters10 күн бұрын
For sure! Though I would say this is pretty accurate for somewhere like Moab. When traction is loose, even with all 4 tires on the ground, lockers will win every time.

@beyondthispoint555712 күн бұрын
I am going for suspension first. Why? It will be of the biggest benefit most of the time. My travel tends to involve towing when with the family so the suspension will be set up to assist with that. When solo, there is no towing but there is a fair bit of weight (spares, etc). There is some off road exploration but in general, we stick to logging roads or remote northern gravel stuff that you would find in Northern Quebec (easy to get to from home).

How much does it cost to get both lockers vs that amount of additional droop?
@JamesMcNamara-j1g11 күн бұрын
There are good lunch box lockers you can get for a lot less than a lift plus the supporting mods needed to make it work.
@OverlandOutfitters10 күн бұрын
The lockers with installation will typically cost more for the front and rear, than a shock relocation and shocks for the rear of a Tacoma, but if you include the price of the front suspension as well, it's probably pretty close to equal, given you are using a high quality shock.

I have a 96 Jeep ZJ lifted only 2" stock springs with spacer, Rubicon Express Superflex arms, Bilstein dampeners the proper length for my setup, no front sway bar with only a tired Trac-Loc LSD in the rear and bump stops to keep the tyres off the fenders. It articulates GREAT and it take me everywhere 33 inch tall all-terrains well take you except I'm only running 31's!
@trailrunnah888612 күн бұрын
Yes! I used to have a 97 ZJ. Even with mild mods they have a ton of flex. Not like my 4Runner with it's little T-Rex arm front suspension, haha.
