Chef's Recommendation: For the spoiler-conscious, the first half of the video focuses on the starting hour or so of the game in Act 1. There's a clear marker at 30:25 where we tell you to go play the game yourself before we get into deeper spoilers.
And even then, we didn't touch on the endgame so you can experience it for yourself.
Our sincerest thanks to Composer Austin Wintory @awintory and Creative Director David Gaider for taking the time to discuss the game with us.

It's worth noting that Hephaestus didn't just make the atomic bomb, he's become the whole-ass American Military Industrial Complex- the ending I got mentioned that the government was considering letting the idols see him again, so he's still around and essentially being held captive by the US Government- meaning he's more or less put himself in the same situation he saved Aphrodite from, just with different captors.
@basharic3162

I got that ending too, and I suspect it's less that he's a prisoner, and more just a very well-sheltered asset. Admittedly a very fine line. But it may be he himself isn't ready to see the others, possibly out of shame. I mean if for no other reason how do you hold him against his will while also giving him the tools to work for you?

@@niccoloparker3548 Captured seems like a strong word. From what I can remember from the one play through I watched, Hephaestus approached the US government voluntarily. Yes, it does strongly suggest (if not outright say) that the US government won't let him leave, but those were part of the terms that he willingly agree to in order to free Aphrodite from the Nazis.

Aphrodite was being tortured and abused. I doubt Hephaestus is having a great time in government custody, but uh, I doubt he’s being tortured. He’s too valuable, for one. Two things I find interesting: 1. Apollo and Aphrodite are some of the gods that due the most weird stuff, especially with lovers, in the myths. And now, they are some of the most miserable. 2. Even for the gods, the Dark Ages are the *Dark* Ages, because they don't know what the hell happened.

The Dark Ages coincide with the Gods being "forgotten" they say the last thing they remember before is one of the Falls of Rome and the memories start back up in the Renaissance. Maybe belief/worship does affect them after all. Ironic that the "Dark Ages" were never actually a thing. The "early medieval period" was certainly a time of turmoil, as Western Rome collapsed, letting its satellites have to find their own way forward, but in terms of history it was a couple of hundred years until the pressure from invading Islamic armies brought us the "Holy Roman Empire" under Charlemagne. Of course Eastern Rome continued for almost a thousand years after the fall of Western Rome.

My personal fan theory that I’ve made just from this video is that Zeus’ avatar where ever he/she is is WELL aware of the situation and is absolutely racked with self hatred for Zeus’ past actions in various myths and with fear of being discovered after so long-especially when Ares and Hephaestus have irreversibly changed the world in such a violent fashion-that he just doesn’t want to meet with anyone ever out of fear of either being tempted into being the same horrible god he once was or being tracked down and turned into some weapon by some malicious third party like a government or a terrorist organization and is just a mountain hermit somewhere avoiding people trying desperately to what any rational person thrusted with the responsibility of head god should do: stay in isolation for the safety and wellbeing of others.

Just want to point out that while yes, everyone singing has a rational explanation in-universe, there's two songs where "it's the muse powers" actually doesn't work, which means Grace must just be breaking into song spontaneously by herself, like a dork. One is the very first song, the other one is a big spoiler.
@eclecticlv
@eclecticlv 8 ай бұрын
I'm a big fan of when cool characters also get to act like huge dorks so I love this interpretation! However, I think its possible that Calliope's muse-presence in/around the theatre at the beginning is what inspired Grace to start singing her feelings out. On the other hand, I'm only a couple hours in myself, don't have all the info, and probably haven't reached the other song you alluded to, so I may yet learn something that makes her Dork Moments canon lol. We'll see how my week goes
@n4l9bx
@n4l9bx 8 ай бұрын
The first song reads to me as directly under the influence of Calliope. Grace even questions 'what was that?' at the end of their duet. She might have been humming or fiddling around with the melody/words and then Calliope kickstarted it into full blown song by surprise appearance. ymmv.
@beretperson
@beretperson 8 ай бұрын
@@n4l9bx I get it, but the reason why I don't think that's the case is that Calliope says that she heard Grace singing and that's what brought her there. THEN, when they sang together, Calliope's power was in play, and that prompted the "What was that?", but when Grace sings by herself before Calliope shows up there are no signs that the muse's power is in effect, it's just Grace singing, no "special effects"

The red version of The Ritual is my favorite song because of the "EVERYBODY" motive it uses. It gave me the feeling of a group conversation to help Aphrodite break the cycle she is stuck in. It is the song that truly cemented the other songs in my head as back and forth conversations. It feels like throughout the song the crowd let's the cycle continue because it's the only thing that seems to help her if only temporary. Grace slowly starts to convince them that now is the time to put your foot down and truly be there for Aphrodite instead of just standing to the side and looking on.

It surely works with hubris. There is a lot of stuff that makes it work. In the end she breaks down over the possibility that she was wrong. That makes sense to me, she is not used to being wrong, it must feel impossible, considering that she was the idol representing knowledge. Through the idea that she can't be wrong she jumps to her first interpretation of the prophecy, being that it means that either the idols die or the last muse does. But in the end we find a better interpretation, being that it meant that the idols should change their way of life. During the trial, she must've realised that. (Also nice to have her in a judge position, considering her connection to the justice system through the Orestia)

My favourite aspect of Katawa Shoujo is how the main character differs on each path. Every romance story is effectively a single linear narrative with one or two fail states, but the MC in each of those paths is shaped by the actions you took to reach each path. In one you're a competitive over-achiever who learns sign language in like a week, in another you can't even remember to take your own meds and your love confession is basically just having an episode and passing out at her feet. It's really neat to see the choices you've made affect not just the story but your agent within the story.

And then you've got the Emi ending where you essentially agree to keep eachother in check to live as long of a healthy life as possible. I was not expecting Hisao to be nearly as much of a character as he is going in. I was expecting a bland self-insertable thing, yet as most things about that game, they went above and beyond.

Saw this game on Steam a while back and it seemed 100% up my alley but i haven't had a chance to play it yet. Watched the first 30 minutes of this and I'm officially completely sold. Imma hafta dip out for a bit, but I will be back for the spoiler section soon. Edit: And I'm back! That may be one of the best games I have played in a while. Anyone reading this who hasn't checked it out, please do. I find it so interesting the roleplay aspect of this. I found it so easy to slip into the character of Grace and naturally go through a whole character arc with her. I would think that it was just one very well written plotline, but based on some of Red's comments in this video it almost sounds like she experienced a completely different character. My Grace started out as a hotheaded and lost soul who didn't know her place in the world, but due to the events in the game had to quickly learn how to take a more tactful approach to everything. She ultimately wanted what was best for everyone but would be the first to call out the Idols on their Astarion-crap when they kept falling back into old habits. Things didn't end up going perfectly, there were a few bumps and tragedies along the way, but I cannot imagine the story going any other way. I'm a bit terrified to try another playthrough because I have no idea how things will change.

I've finished the game twice (once intelligent Freddie romance, once courageous Persephone romance). I absolutely loved both playthroughs. The story is excellent, the characters are delightful and charming, the music is fantastic, the mythology has a creative twist, and the cast is incredible. For a game like this to get such a star studded cast is insane. For a Critical Role fan, to have Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Felicia Day, Mary Elizabeth McGlinn and Khary Payton in the game was joyous. It surprised me, it made me sing and laugh and cry. 10/10 would recommend.

The interactiveness of Stray Gods here kinda reminds me a bit of Songs for a Hero, which is a brazilian videogame that's an interactive musical. It's not NEARLY as complex as Stray Gods (and it also came out almost a decade ago too), the music doesn't just change styles based on your choices or anything and it doesn't have branching paths (it's actually a plataformer with a straight storyline), but it has the same basic idea of the music responding to the player's actions. There are certain lines that only play in certain sequences of the level or when you do certain things (such as staying still for too long), and it basically responds to what you're doing right now. The whole game the Hero is singing the adventure for you about what's happening right now. (It's out on english too, btw) I really love when games, specially musical games, do these sorts of interactive mechanics into the game where the music, ambient, character's, etc react to the choices you make and you get a different story and/or more pieces of informatiom, and it's specially fun in musical games because it makes the track super unique and tailored to your experience; though it's difficult as heck to pull off because you need to blend these tracks together. (Which is already a pain with instrumental music, but voiced? Ooooh boi...) I loved the concept on an interactive musical game when I first saw it in songs for a hero years ago, and I'm absolutely loving it in the way Stray Gods made an even more complex version of this concept and it's so magnificent.

Just for a comparison point of a game with a few songs that are modular with player choice, y'all should also play Pyre, by Supergiant Games. Yes, before they made Hades into the internet's favorite thirst trap for awhile there, the same studio also made a game that experimented with a few things like this, including a final boss theme that came in almost a dozen versions based on your opponents, and an ending song that changes based on your in-game choices.

Something I love about this game is the eyes glowing thing. So Grace/Calliope's eyes glow whenever they start songs, use their powers, etc. We see Apollo bring up his powers momentarily in the fight with Persephone, but what about Aphrodite? If you check her eyes at any point, especially during her party, they seem to glow slightly. If she feels love of some kind at all times, then she's technically always using her powers. It's one of those little character design details that I love.

I had a dream where I was unnaturally compelled to go to a certain location. When I (Arab/Jewish mixed ethnic background) arrived, there was an African-descended woman already there and pretty soon after I showed up, a Hispanic woman arrived. Once the three of us were assembled we discovered that we had been given the power of the Furies. As soon as our powers were activated, we immediately started receiving prayers of the oppressed (mostly minority women and children) whose victimization wasn't being treated with respect by the authorities. That really made me re-think who the Furies were and the role they played in the ancient world because think about it--in ancient Greece, if you were a woman or girl and your father beat you, sold you into slavery, married you off against your will, or even killed you, you had no legal recourse, and if you were a slave it was that and worse. I bet women, girls, and slaves were the primary worshipers of the Furies: the people who couldn't get help anywhere else.

A little piece of worldbuilding and storytelling I really like (and just noticed in my second playthrough with my sibling when they pointed it out) is in Apollo's design. His belt looks like a moon, which is a common shape but it seems to match in style and material his golden pendant of a sun. I don't know if I'm saying something really obvious or already adressed but it really seems to imply not only that Artemis is gone, but that he keeps a memento in her memory

I watched the first half of the video, went and bought then played the game, and came back. It was a wonderful experience, and has turned into my current hyperfixation. Tinfoil hat theory I'm not sure has been said elsewhere: the Idols tell us that they can barely remember their "original" versions back in classical Greece, and have no memories from before. We also know that, with every passing of the eidelon, their oldest memories fade. My personal theory is that the Idols/eidelons didn't *start* in classical Greece, that's just the earliest significant memories they have left. Like you guys said, this mirrors how we're not sure where a lot of these cults and stories originated in real life. What if the origins of the eidelons go back to the origins of the even older myths beyond classical Greece? Like, maybe Aphrodite actually used to *literally* be Ishtar?! The far-reaching implications of the lore that the Stray Gods team has put together here are *staggering*, and I love it so much!
