Fun fact: She had lived a fulfilling life of sacrifice and great love, that she earned a place in Nirvana after death. However, even when she was at the gate, she heard a plea from earth and turned her back towards final peace to help the person instead. Earning her Immortality that way.

Well I read that WuKong is immune to fire by chanting a fire proof spell, but because Red Boy suddenly blew smoke into his eyes, he couldn’t chant properly anymore and got burnt. Frankly, WuKong’s awesome looking red eyes that he got by being cooked in Laozi’s cauldron for 49 days that. Is also dubbed as the “Golden eyes fiery gaze” (火眼金睛) that can see through demonic disguises is actually over glorified dried eye.

Technically a lot of the stories in the book are wayyyyyyyyy older. A lot of the book was based on oral and written folktales and fictionalized versions of historical events that the author would have known about since he was a kid. Tripitaka's character is based on Xuanzang, a monk from the Tang Dynasty who defied a travel ban to make the journey to the west/India in real life. The basis for Sun Wukong/Monkey comes from a bunch of different stuff over time, and at earliest dates back to 700 bce.

The fire red kid uses is also why some people when walking alone at night, pat themselves on the shoulders and head to ward off evil: the average human, especially young men, has 3 lamps of that type of fire on their shoulders and head. In fact, Sun Wukong is not afraid of fire, but of smoke. When Sun Wukong was placed into Laozi’s Alchemy Furnace, he hid in the position of "巽," which protected him from being burned. However, in the Bagua, “巽” represents wind, and the wind blew smoke into his eyes, injuring them and turning them into his "golden-gaze fiery eyes." These eyes allowed him to see through demons, but also made him vulnerable to smoke. In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong's eyes were twice harmed by smoke, during the battles with the Yellow Wind Demon and the Red Boy.

Red Boy is based on Sudhana (Ch: Sancai), whose spiritual journey is told in the 'Gandavyuha Sutra' (c. 3rd-cent.). The youth sets out on a quest towards enlightenment and trains under 52 different teachers, including Maitreya, Avalokiteśvara (the South Asian variant of Guanyin), Manjusri, and Samantabhadra. This is why he becomes Guanyin's disciple in the novel. As stated by a previous person, this explains why some religious paintings include a small praying child standing next to the Bodhisattva.

Interesting fact: The Bull Demon King is the inspiration for Bowser. Originally, Shigeru Miyamoto wanted the villain of _Super Mario Bros._ to be an anthropomorphic bull in reference to the _JttW_ character, but when it was pointed out to him that a bull being king of a bunch of turtles didn’t make a lot of sense thematically, he decided to change him into a giant turtle with a few bull-like features to maintain the connection. That’s why Bowser has bull horns and a snout instead of a turtle beak.

Man, I wish more stories that tried to rip off the Journey to the West formula did it like this. Everyone's good and bad decisions actually made sense for their characters, Monkey needed help to save the day, and it was SUPER fun to see Kuan Yin get involved. Dayum, NEVER piss off a Boddhitsava. This is easily my favorite so far. Red, your art was exceptional. Those giant Steven Uiniverse eyes on Monkey when Kuan Yin migraine-mudhra'd Red Boy are perhaps the best expression he has EVER worn. Wukong, Bajie, Wujing and Dragon Horse could very easily fly Tripitaka to the Western Heavens, but there is a literal "it is the journey, not the destination" that has to happen. If our heroes did not travel by mortal means, they would never encounter and overcome all the demons and calamities along the way and in doing so, pacify the mystical evils along the way. Similar to how the labours of Heracles low-key explains why all the monsters are gone, Jouney to the West has our heroes eliminate all the demonic threats along the silk road between the Tang, Central Asia, and India (aka the known Chinese world). There is also an allegory and Pro Chinese propaganda in it too, where in overcoming many of the threats along the way, our heroes from Tang China bring peace to the lands they travel through.

Fun fact someone pointed out, but in the cartoon Monkey Kid, they drop a LOT of nods to the original JTTW including Red Son (Red Boy) punching himself to activate his Samadi fire in a flashback. Some events and characters are shuffled around in MK from the original story but overall it actually is pretty close to the orginal and sort of creates its own AU canon. It gets lost in all the action, adventure, and jokes but there is a subtle undertone of Sun-Wu Kong by the point MK starts having grown to really miss his friends and traveling companions since being super immortal he has outlived all of them. Oh they also make a cut-off reference to that time he picked a fight with Budda.
