I think a lot of what I love about Death Shall Rise is how much it doesnt try to charm you. Its just straight forward late thrash / proto death. No frills, but I love the shout along choruses and the mid paced headbangs it has to offer. I know I'm not going to change your mind about it, but it kind of appeals to me the way Time does Not Heal does.
@HeavyMetallurgy7 жыл бұрын
I've tried every year since it was released to find something redeemable about it. "doesnt try to charm you"? Mission accomplished! Haha. That band always struck me as the awkward interloper between the thrash and death worlds as you mentioned, but their laid back and typical songwriting style left little to be desired. To me anyway!!

Glad to see Massacre. I've been saying that for years, and getting a lot of crap for it, but you're absolutely correct. Would love to see what your thoughts are regarding underrated albums and bands, especially from the 80s and 90s. Either because they got buried (e.g. Sorcery from Sweden) or people just like to bash it because it's kewl (e.g. Covenant - Nexus Polaris). Or maybe a thought piece about certain trends within metal, specifically bm, since there are so many and you run a label geared towards a very specific taste. Love these thoughts and opinions/perspectives.

And also, I think they hype behind Leviathan, for me being a fan, is the experimentation. Jeff is an extremely experimental song writer, and that's what keeps it interesting for me. It's hard to predict what is gunna happen next in the album or even the song. He also creates one of the most menacing atmosphere I've ever heard out of any band. He just makes such a sadistic sounding album! But that in itself would be enough to keep people away

great video Marty. yeah i agree with the final frontier criticism. space was a cool theme for the album so i was expecting it to be more "cosmic" and explosive. but after just a few listens, you instantly realize it's just a background music album compared to their top records. not their worst album but definitely a huge letdown. i just met amorphis in athens, ga last thursday. really cool dudes. they put on a great show and i got a bunch of signed shit and some drumsticks. what is your most overrated/or disappointing amorphis record? what is your favorite? got the orders you shipped to me the other week too. great stuff and very thankful to have a record shop like yours to explore. more orders coming soon! support Bindrune!!

Thanks for your comments and support!! Regarding Amorphis, their 1st 2 full -length albums remain amazing in my world and among my favorite albums ever. I recall getting Elegy as a promo and laughing my ass off at their band's obvious desire to enter the commercial market. I eventually got over this and ended up liking the album due to how catchy the songs are, but I remain disappointed at how they moved away from such deep and challenging death metal with feeling. That Maiden album though... other than the track, Coming Home, it's a really boring outing. They sound tired and dare I say.... old!

While it's pretty hard to gauge "-ratedness" of anything, I can't necessarily disagree with the general premise presented here, as these are all certainly not my favorite releases by these artists (outside of maybe "IX Equilibrium"). I will say that I like a lot them quite a bit though: "Heartwork", "Scar Sighted", "The Final Frontier" particularly (Iron Maiden and Leviathan are probably my top 2 favorite bands, so certainly fandom bias is a potential possibility here). Again, these aren't nearly my favorite releases by any of these bands, but I still think they're good albums. Then again, we aren't necessarily talking about good vs bad, but proper "-ratedness", so yeah it's a tough one to figure.... Thanks!

Hey Marty, I love your channel. This is a great video. A metal fan can't get tired of discussing metal... :) Although I disagree with some, I can see where you're coming from for each album. I really love From Beyond. It was released at a time when I was discovering death metal bands, especially American ones. I was hooked on Death, Deicide, Malevolent, Morbid Angel etc. And From Beyond contains songs that are easier to grasp, get used to and like for a novice death metal fan because the songs are simple and catchy. But for a death metal veteran who had been following the bands since the genre's introduction, it is a simple album with nothing new on the table. I totally agree with you on Heartwork. It has some very good songs but overall the album does not do much. However it certainly paved way for a lot of European bands in melodic death metal genre and it helped it grow. I also agree with you on Harmony Corruption. It is not that they have gone soft or started writing longer songs. After all Utopia Banished is a masterpiece. But Harmony lacks good songwriting and sound. Agree with you on Clandestine as well... Just, boring... I like IX Equilibrium though but it might be a flop for fans who don't like polished, clean sounds in extreme bands. My biggest disagreement is Coma of Souls :) I am an Extreme Agression junkie as well. But what I like about Coma Of Souls is it presents a better Kreator in terms of musicianship and finally some lead playing that makes sense :)))) Maybe this is stretching too far but I think that Coma of Souls, although there has been some experimentation in between, laid the foundation of what Kreator has been doing for the last 15 years in albums like Violent Revolution, Enemy Of God etc... I agree with you on The Final Frontier to a certain point. Overall a weak album in Maiden standards but after several turns, I really liked a few songs on the album. I just can't take The Book Of Souls. They made long songs for the sake of making long epics and it definitely did not work. Such a boring album. I think Souls is Maiden's worst. Yes even worse than Blaze albums in my opinion :))))) Respect and hail from Istanbul, Turkey...

I love the shit out of Heartwork, but its definitely evident that they were grasping at anything that would relieve them of their prior death grind genre. For anyone that was a fan before Heartwork I cant imagine how much it would have been hard to love. You could kind of say that for me At the Hearth of Winter is my Heartwork.
@HeavyMetallurgy7 жыл бұрын
And for that, I completely understand! But unlike your thoughts on At the Heart of Winter, I like and can appreciate the talent behind Heartwork. At the time though, it was a culture shock so to speak. With Immortal, ATHOW was the result of a stylistic development that was evident on the albums leading up to its release. I think anyway. Their riffs started to become more catchy and complex as far back as Battles in the North.

I think you make some solid arguments for the albums that get a little bit too much hype. I think Massacre gets all the hype because of the name recognition and because of the time the record was put out for being some of the first death metal out there to my knowledge. I think that's a fair list, even if I do rather like most of "Heartwork" and "Clandestine". However, I mostly kind of feel bad seeing poor Iron Maiden on that list: I feel like the band could probably have gone into semi-retirement any time they wanted through the 2000s, especially during and after the years that Bruce was out of the band, but Steve Harris and the other remaining members kept going and writing new albums under the motivation of not letting the Iron Maiden fans down, to keep going in a "show must go on!" kind of spirit. In fact, I really get the impression that Steve Harris was heavily depressed and rather suicidal for a while, with keeping busy with the band being the only thing keeping him going. That a lot of the later albums just didn't seem to "gel" with fans in spite of the band's best efforts and good will seems kind of tragic - I think there was some great stuff on those albums, but of course nothing like their best albums (an almost unfair standard to hold over the band), and it has really been a dark, dark period for Iron Maiden and their fans. I guess a lot of folks were ready for any sign that the classic Iron Maiden they remember were back, and thus the seemingly out-of-place hype some of those later albums would get. Still, being over-rated doesn't mean the album is bad, even a good album with a flaw or two can be over-hyped as "the best thing ever" out of proportion to its above-average but not THAT great status. I think most - and maybe all - the albums you listed were good, but not THAT great, compared to the sometimes inexplicable hype they were getting in their day, and perhaps still get now!

totally agree for Massacre , but Carcass ?? ... they didnt force themselve to have the same sound again and again just like you reproached it to Kreator and they did an amazing song writing on it they took time to make something really solid and original not like entombeds Clandestine as you mentionned it which is boring .

Finally! Coma Of Souls is overrated. I've been saying this for years. It doesn't touch the greatness of Extreme Aggression.
@BIGRGreenEyes Жыл бұрын
Totally agree about Cancer. They are the epitome of boring. Every release is boring. Midpaced, old school Florida style thrashing death metal. No frills, no melody, very few memorable guitar solos, interchangeable & non-interesting/generic riffs. Kinda the way I describe a lot of Monstrosity, although those guys have sprinkled some dark melodies here & there. Cancer just has no reason to exist.

Completely agree! The ones here I never really thought of as overrated were Massacre and Napalm Death's releases. Then again, I never really found myself returning to them. Massacre will always be decent gym music, but aside from that when I sit down to listen it doesn't really have captivating songs. For me though, Carcass' descent started EVEN BEFORE that album. After that first album, they started declining and fast too. In my opinion though, Watain is terrible. The band they try to emulate, Dissection, is way overrated. Unanimated was leagues better if they had actually come up with more ideas. A couple of bands you missed -Death (decent band, but the later releases had the same issues more or less as Entombed) -Mgla (terrible band with boring repetitive songs)

I wish they used different drum sound in Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption. Nice songs overall but that drum sound gets on my nerves. Mentally Murdered was much better.

As much as I'm a huge fan of some of these albums. You aren't being pretentious about it. I agree on a couple of your choices. The Massacre and Cancer hurt! I love those albums. But it's all good. But my favorite type of death metal is the early thrash/death metal and Cancer and Massacre I almost consider extreme thrash not death. I love Clandestine too but thanks for giving some love to wolverine blues. I love that record too.

Thanks for watching and contributing to the conversation. That was my intention, to inspire discussion with these videos. Some folks were taking these opinions pretty personally. Anyway.... some of these albums I don’t “hate”, just found them boring, or some just don’t hold up over the years very well. We all hear the same tunes and feel their impact differently. That’s what keeps it interesting.
@wenndingofoster56804 жыл бұрын
For the most part I agree . On Coma of Souls though Terror Zone is a fantastic song , for the most part the album is filled with melodic lead guitar passages that sound in complete . I would like Watson if it wasn't for ll the dead animal roadkill bullshit . Seems that kind of crap would belong at a Cannibal Corpse show Obviously someone should label black metal Deth Metal since those type of bands always want to reak of putrefaction , and Death Metal bands only sing about it . Leave those poor possoms , cats etc. on the side of the road let ODOT deal with the roadkill . Yes I find the punk vocals on Clandestine very irritating . Glad someone out there agrees with me

Yeah man. I was not a fan of how the Norwegian scene developed. Classic BM bands adopting more of a DM feel, just wasnt the same, nor did it have the same impact or level of quality.

wow never realized how much we agree on these bands hahaha Watain has always made me cringe and laugh. Good topic! I agree with Harmony Corruption, sounds like garbage. I can see your point on Heartwork, but it was my first Carcass album so I don't have the long-time fan's perspective on it. My #1 overrated band is Destruction. For me they were sloppy thrash that didn't do anything that anyone else hadn't done better. I will throw in Possessed too: take away the logo and a song called Death Metal and you have third tier thrash. Keep this topic up, it is fun!
@HeavyMetallurgy7 жыл бұрын
It was meant to be fun and get people thinking, and or pissed off. haha. Regarding Destruction.... I get what you're saying, but I really love their first 3 full-length albums. Especially Total Death. So dark and different from anything else coming out of Germany at the time. I will agree that their sound is really thin and strange! Thanks for watching!

Coma of souls I feel is yes an overrated album but I think it's mostly for artwork
@HeavyMetallurgy2 жыл бұрын
By saying it was overrated DOESNT mean I dislike it. I know and can sing along with this whole album. For me, it was a step back in intensity and passion coming off of the AMAZING Extreme Aggression. That's a hard album to follow-up. An absolute gem in their catalog. Thanks for watching!

I agree about Watain. There are some legendary bands that were innovators and deserve the praise, that I've never been a huge fan of though. Never was big on Death, Pestilence, Black Sabbath, Enslaved, to name a few. Sorry I know it's off topic. A couple overrated bands off the top of my head are Gorgoroth and Infernal Majesty.

Ironically enough, I think the most overrated Metal band of all time is Celtic Frost! That kinda made me giggle.
@butchvito4 жыл бұрын
How the hell are Celtic Frost overrated? Just because you don't like them? They were never big commercially by no means and never got any praise from critics. Their influence alone can't be denied though. They're one of the pioneers of extreme metal. It's hard to find many death metal bands that were not influenced by CF. Not to mention a big influence on the New Orleans "Sludge" scene as well.

Pleasure To Kill was my gateway to Kreator while Extreme Aggression solidified my fandom. Coma Of Souls is great because to me I can listen to Gods Of Violence and see direct lineage. To me it seems COS is where Kreator really found their stride. Now with Renewal, they completely departed from their true sound.. great video though!

Not my fav Kreator but I still love Coma of Souls. Heartwork is the only Carcass album I got into. Anthems and Wrath are the only albums I like from Emperor. I can't get into the production of Nightside. Brave New World is the last Maiden album I liked. I totally agree about Clandestine. Hate the vocals.

most overrated = reign in blood. yeah yeah influenced a million bands, whatever. two good songs, 2 or 3 other songs are pretty good as well but hella short, the others just blend together. funny enough, i listened to that album more than others which i adore, just because it's so short and it's easier to get through

The only song on Final Frontier that I liked was that ballad-y track about flight. Was it called Welcome Home? Can’t remember. Some good lyrics and feeling on that one. The rest is a snooze fest. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Finally someone who agree with me about Harmony Corruption being a bit overrated... ND was the first extreme music I heard and I've always liked their material.. all eras - EXCEPT Harmony corruption. Straight death metal - and especially the production - doesnt suit ND at all...
