He is though. I wouldn't trade current Odegaard for prime Ozil right now. Reason being whilst Ozil is most definitely the best playmaker of all time but his work rate was horrendous. His game doesn't translate to what is currently needed. The old 10 is dead. 10s need to be able to press as well and he never put that work in. Ode is a good mix of both and is also a proper leader. Ozil was one of the most controversial players towards the end of his arsenal career. Wenger got shit for benching him. Emery got shit for benching him. Freddie got shit for benching him. Arteta got shit for benching him but the fact is 4 managers benched him and yet because of how popular Ozil is they all got shit for it. But it was the right decision. The fact he failed in Turkey too proves that. And the fact that all these managers got shit for benching him is proof that he is overrated.

I agree with you that Ozil was very creative, amazing footballer. But I have seen how he had to be carried in so many games because he just wasn’t physical enough to press or track back. You could argue that KDB is just as creative as Ozil was. But difference is KDB has amazing stamina and can tackle and press. And don’t get me wrong, this happens with other players from that Arsenal team. People now think Giroud has always been world class. But at Arsenal, he was frustratingly slow and wasteful with chances. Physicality is essential in the PL imo.

@@kyapatayaar7568 you can say that about so many great players though who came through in that time period. Football wasn’t played how it is now and evolved to a point where athleticism is now just as highly valued as pure technical ability. It’s what makes playmakers like De Bruyne so good in today’s game and why the more traditional 10’s such as Ozil have been fazed out over the last 5 years. But comparing the two’s playmaking ability, Ozil is clear. Ozil would have three options in front of him and pick out a fourth option that no one else watching the game could see. Ozil is genuinely the most underrated player of the 2010s, I saw in real time how his reputation took a 180 as soon as he went to Arsenal, he is the most creative player of that ear not name Messi, a key player for a World cup winner and one of the best players for the best La Liga team ever (for points and goals) with Real Madrid in 11/12, that does not even cover his exploits with Werder, dragging them to the 2009 UEFA cup final, winning the U-21 Euros with a dominant display vs England the same year and his transformative performances at the 2010 World Cup. Although I do admit he did become frustrating in they latter stages of his career with his attitude and application at times especially as an Arsenal fan who was desperate and begging for our best players to lead by example his talent was one of a kind and people will realise just how good his was when they look back without the recency bias and look at his career objectively. Plus I'm not having 'He wouldn't have went to Arsenal if he was the player you thought he was' because Arsenal only got him because of timing, he was available late in the window and Arsenal were the only option and he only came because of Wenger's reputation, I'm kinda sick of the disrespect Arsenal receive, acting like the club are Millwall or something and not one of the biggest clubs in the world.
@unluckygamer8821 Жыл бұрын
I’m an Arsenal fan, watched every game whilst he was here and the fact you think he was one of the most underrated players of all time is a testament to how overrated he actually was. He was average for the first season, brilliant in the 2nd and from there he was an Arsenal level midfielder, we weren’t lucky to have him, or he didn’t perform like he should be playing for a better team. He was our level. And, to think in your opinion Arsenal had the most underrated player for 6 years is laughable. He was incredibly high rated for what he did earlier in his career, hence why we went crazy when he signed, and hence why he was so well marketed by Adidas and he massed an incredible fanbase. But, at the end of the day, Arsenal fans were left disappointed, because at the end of the day he ended up being our level. Not more, not less. And just because he would have an incredible performance against Bournemouth, didn’t make us forget the amount of times he went missing in top 6 games. Now Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal was a player that was above our level and is the best player I have seen play for the club. The fact that we payed Ozil £350k a week to stay, and let Sanchez leave was laughable and showed how Ozil was incredibly overrated by Wenger himself

I watched Scotlands two games this break. Robbo was wingback in a 5, with Tierney behind him. He had 3 assists and 2 clean sheets. I’ve seen England play with a 5, with Trent or James as wingbacks with Walker behind, and various other mixes. I’ve also seen James in Chelsea with Azpi behind him. This is how Liverpool should play. They have the CB with possibly the highest potential in the league, but even he looks like an absolute fool at times, because he don’t work hard enough and he gets left alone too much, with the high full backs. Play 3 at the back, plus the wingbacks. 2 in midfield. It’s the way to go. But Klopp don’t see it. I’m so upset they don’t wanna give it a go. Drop Fabinho and put Matip in there. Please. I just wanna see it. Once. It may fail, but please try and change things around. 4-3-3 don’t work, we’re too old and lazy.

Özil is the only player in history to get highest assists in the Prem, La Liga, Bundesliga and the World Cup. Holds the record for highest chances created in a prem season. Instrumental in Germany’s World Cup success and considered the best in a great Germany team. Ronaldo says himself Özil made him the best player in the world. Ended Arsenals trophy draught with 4 FA cups, probably the best they could do with the team they had at the time. Just some reasons as to why he isn’t overrated 🤷🏼♂️

Ozil's peak was cut short because of complacency and laziness. You look at the level some players are playing at, even when they turn 33-34 and he was pretty much done by the age of 29, and that much should be acknowledged; but to say he was overrated is an absolute travesty. Few attacking midfielders have performed for their National teams the way Ozil has for Germany. People also forget how good he was for 3 seasons at Real Madrid. Ronaldo acknowledged Ozil as being one of his favourite players to have ever played with because he was so incisive and ruthless with his passing. He was the best attacking midfielder in Europe for a good 4 seasons.

özil is my favourite player ever so maybe i’m biased. but people chose to forget how incredible he was. the most elegant player i’ve ever seen. you’ve got players like KDB and these come through and sure, most likely a better overall player, but nahh bro not even he has the sauce and tek that özil had. arguably the best creative midfielder to touch the game.

"Ozil going to the Arsenal team that finished 4th at best"?! Arsenal and Man utd were the only premier league sides which qualified for the champions league from 1998-99 until 2013 (when Ozil joined). So it means 4th place at worst.

Adam is completely right about Conte, his style of football is dead, you can’t play “defensive” football anymore and expect to win titles. And Rory needs to take a look at Allegri in Juventus who has the exact same style as Conte and is awful this season.
@BlackChrishi Жыл бұрын
You can play "defensive football" and win titles, it's just not sustainable long term and is unreliable against smaller teams in cup competition. Just 2 seasons ago, both Atlético and Inter Milan won titles with what you'd call "defensive football". Also Allegri's team had a 15 point deduction without which they'd be 2nd in the Serie A and 2 points above Lazio who currently occupy that spot.
@Anonymous-sq8me Жыл бұрын

This one I feel strongly about, int'l football is very overrated when it comes to the quality. You often see players ball out in tourneys because there's barely any tactics and set patterns, as managers don't get to coach players consistently, then they get their big move and they're pants, James is an obvious example.

Thank God, some truth on Ozil. People were comparing him to Iniesta and Modric when he announced his retirement. He plays beautiful football but its no coincidence that Madrid instantly won the CL the season he left and subsequently won another 4 in the next few years. Not someone you want to win a tough game of football. Even for Germany he was overshadowed by Kroos and they pushed him out wide for Kroos around when they won the WC in 2014.
