Fun fact, in this war there were a number of air battles/ dogfights and neither side had jet aircraft, meaning that this is the last time in history that piston engined fighter aircraft combatted each other in the skies. Both side’s Air Force consisted of 2 legendary American fighter aircraft of WW2, the F4U Corsair and the P-51D Mustang.

Mr. Terry: I don't know a lot about this war The video: is thrice the length of the actual video

Hey Terry, John here, from Honduras. I know it's a little late, but I only got to know your channel until this year and finally came across this video, so I just wanted to take the opportunity to share some more knowledge. The issue in particular stemmed from the immigration of Salvadorians to Hondurans, as was originally mentioned, but more specifically, the issue originated after protests had sprung up in Honduras by the working farmers who worked the American Fruit Company, who owned the largest portion of Honduran banana plantations. While the farmers were protesting for safer working conditions and better pay, the American Fruit Company found that the best way to shut down these protests was by firing over half of their plantation staff, resulting in a massive rise of unemployment among farmers. Naturally, a bunch of these farmers were Salvadorians, and being unemployed farmers and all, they soon found themselves basically squatting on private farming lands owned by other local landholders and farmers, who got very upset about the people stealing their land (which most the time they weren't even using; at the time, it was common for powerful landholders to hold way more land that they actually used or needed for their businesses, and it was often these unused lands which the unemployed farmers would often 'squat' on to make their own produce). This of course led to the powerful landholders in Honduras to formally demand that the government take action against the farmers taking over their lands, and since of course a number of these were Salvadorian, the government resorted to deporting them to El Salvador. Now, this leads to the Salvadorian question. They were the much smaller country of the two, and the majority of the Salvadorian population at the time were farmers. And, much like Honduras, El Salvador had a rather broken agrarian economic system which allowed a small group of landholders to own most of the land suited for farming. The Salvadorian government immediately took steps to modernize their army, purchasing new equipment, expanding their army, and even purchasing new aircraft from a private aviation club in the United States (They ended up roughly only receiving 3 of the 4 planes purchased, since once the war started, the US decided that they should probably not let such a transaction take place). Of course, The Salvadorians weren't exactly warmongers, so the government did try to resolve the issue peacefully, internally at least, by seeking to pass an agrarian land reform that would require the arable lands owned by the few powerful landholders to be split up and redistributed by the government, in order to ease their fragile agrarian economy strained by overpopulation. This, of course, didn't sit well with the big powerful landholders who boycotted against the reform and eventually the Salvadorian government was kind of caught between a rock and a hard place. They could not pass an agrarian reform that might resolve the issue peacefully because the powerful landholders wouldn't allow it, but they also couldn't stop the wave of immigrants being deported back into their country from Honduras without resorting to war. This left El Salvador with no choice but to resort to military action in order to stop the deportation of El Salvadorian immigrants by force. They drew up battle plans for the invasion, and even planned when they would declare war. Though this might be up to some speculation so take with a grain of salt, but although the football match was the most immediate event leading up to the war, it is thought that El Salvador chose to declare war at this time, because with the Apollo 11 Mission scheduled just two days later (July 16th), and what with the whole Vietnam War still ongoing, it could be said that the United States was "a little busy", and El Salvador may have hoped that their whole war issue would get buried along with other less important issues on the Americans' side. With that out of the way, El Salvador was primed and ready with a land army over twice the size of Honduras' own land forces, and to make matters worse the Honduran army was actually smaller in reality than it was on paper because several corrupt officers had claimed bigger numbers so they could keep the payrolls of soldiers that didn't exist for themselves. Another matter that didn't help the Honduran Army was the fact that they had neglected to survey their lands for strategic locations, and found themselves in the rather awkward position where they didn't have any military maps for the areas they were supposed to defend, making the matter of establishing defensive positions all that much harder. The last but not least major issue in the Honduran army was supplies. The Honduran Army lacked modern guns, let alone enough guns alone to properly supply their whole army, a matter that was made worse after several army officers tried to conscript local angry farmers into their ranks, whom they often did not train or supply with guns, leading to another awkward situation where the Hondurans were sending untrained farmers armed with only machetes to charge at Salvadorian troops armed with modern guns and proper training. The Hondurans did have one ace up their sleeve against the Salvadorians and that was their Air Force. Honduras had proper pilot schools of the sort and better trained their pilots with technical abilities on fighter pilot training than El Salvador did, and although El Salvador did try to resolve this issue slightly by purchasing newer planes, they simply couldn't make up for their lack of training, something that at least for pilots could not be resolved in as little the time they had between the issue first arose and when war broke out. Another fact that benefited the Hondurans was that the top authority of the Honduran Air Force predicted that the Salvadorians would try to kick off the war by bombing the airports in Tegucigalpa in an attempt to cripple Honduran air power, he decided to transfer most of the Honduran aircraft away from Tegucigalpa and move them further away north, to San Pedro Sula. This, however, made things slightly more difficult for the Honduran Air Force to conduct offensive operations in El Salvador, as being located further away on San Pedro Sula meant that they could only just barely fit enough fuel into their aircraft to launch raids in El Salvador and be able to still have enough fuel to make it back into their airbase with fuel to spare. (Another fun fact, Honduran and Salvadorian air pilots had a horrible habit of ending up in neighboring Guatemala, where they definitely weren't supposed to be. There is at least one case of a Salvadorian pilot who was forced to crash land in Guatemala, after their aircraft got shot by the Honduran Air Force, and an unfortunate Honduran pilot who after their mission got lost, and being unable to recognize where they were exactly, ended up accidentally landing in a Guatemalan airport, having decided that he had probably made it far enough from El Salvador that he at least probably wouldn't be landing on hostile territory. This poor dude would have to sit out the rest of the war blushing terribly in Guatemala, as he was refused passage back into Honduras until after the war had ended.) There was actually a film released recently earlier this year here in my home country that sheds more light into the situation with real interviews with participants of the war, and although the information presented by OS's video is, well, oversimplified, it's just rather difficult to get information about wars like this online since most of it can either only be gotten through direct interviews or by looking at old documents that because of our governments' infrastructure, they just never make it online, and that's without taking into account the issue of translating them to English for the more international community. So if you can get your hands on that particular film I would definitely encourage you to give it a try. The first part is a bit meh where they actually try to do the whole 'Movie' part, but once that part is done, they move to the actual documentary, where they explain and detail all the events with commentary from historians and veterans of both sides of the war. EDIT: Wow this is long.

A few channel recommendations for you to scope out: Historia Civilis- A great narrator, does mostly ancient roman and greek history, both military and political. His videos on how roman politics worked( Cursus honorum offices, elections, consulship years of the notable late republic politicians) are really well made, his series on Caesar' carrier(political and military) is almost finished. Also the videos on the Athenian and Spartan government systems are really interesting. Montemayor- His is a small channel covering battles, so far he did some WW2 Pacific theater videos and some Mexican-American War videos. I'm recommending his channel, because his video on the Pearl Harbor attack, is hands down, the best summery of that event i've ever watched. Really well explained and graphically easy to understand videos. Invicta- A mixed gaming and history channel. I think their "How they did it" and "Moments in history" series will be of interest to you(particularly the "Roman soldier prepares diner","The abandoned citizens of Alesia" and "Nika riots" videos).
@TheShadowofDragons5 жыл бұрын
Seconding the recommendations for Historia Civilis. They've done what is effectively a year by year timeline covering the last decade or two of the Roman Republic. Insights into Cicero, Cato, Pompey, Crassus, a bunch of other less well known Roman generals and politicians like Labinus, Clodius and Bibulus, and of course they cover the Civil War and the Career of the Big Julius C himself.

My guess: the video just recommended extending it either with the Benelux countries' help... or if they wouldn't agree to help, cutting off that border with them all the way to the sea. In real history, I recall those governments not being too cooperative, but the threat of being potentially cut off might have made them play ball.

@@RoyalFusilier They weren't Allies but they were still on good terms and on a quasi alliance. Extending the Maginot over Belgiums border could have been seen as bad faith and a sign of agression.

Fusilier It actually wasn’t. The French expected Germany to go through Belgium. The other part of the line was using natural barriers like rivers in the Low Countries. Unfortunately, one of those barriers they used was the Ardennes forest (thought to be impenetrable), which was left under defended. This is where the Germans attacked.

The could not find any witnesses that attended the funeral. Kapuscinski wrote that members of the national team attended the funeral. They could not find the newspaper that Kapuscinski referred to and no evidence that any Amelia Bolanos died in El Salvador in during the World Championship. A journalist from El Salvador searched also two years for evidence and found nothing. He said the he is sure that Kapuscinski made this up for selling his book.

A member of the UK Parliament (Tony Benn, IIRC) once suggested (jokingly) that the UK threaten to go to war with Germany if they didn't return the football from the 1966 World Cup Final (when England beat West Germany), citing the instance of England once going to war over someone's ear. My memories not absolutely great, but I was doing A level politics at the time (so around 1996-7) and we were on a field trip to the Houses of Parliament, and we were sat in the gallery above the seats of the House of Commons when it happened. It's a bit weird being sat there in Parliament and watching an MP (In fact, I think he was even Minister for Sport and Culture at the time) even jokingly suggest going to war over football.

I really enjoy your videos. I always liked history but I always hated history at the same time. I have a massive issue remembering historical dates, and since a lot of questions in history exams require you to know the dates, I sucked. I absolutely loved it but I generally had low grades. I could tell you the order in which events happened, just the exact dates would not stay in my brain. Now I don't have to take exams and now the dates by heart so I like history a bit more. Anyway, I had an idea that seemed cool to me. I know that you're a reaction channel and my conncept idea is not about reacting to videos, but I'll let you see what you think. What do you think about doing some cities' historical review ? Like, you take a look at all the historical events that took place in this city and explain what happened, what led to this event and what this event led to. Would that be something that you would be able/would enjoy doing ?
