Thanks Josh (and Mikey). What attracted me to - and stuck with - your channel years ago is your teaching style which is easy to understand, logical, and just works. The quality of the video/editing and audio is also what distinguished you and Mikey from others. The reference to a favorite teacher is so true. Example: Djokovic’s coaches are not the best tennis players in the world. Love you guys. Keep it up.

No one asks how far Bryson DeChambeau's coach hits a golf ball. I'd ignore it as well. Just keep doing what you're doing. I've definitely gained some distance and accuracy this year by filming myself and identifying what I need to work on. I'm not "gaining 100 ft in one day" but I've made measurable improvements and having fun.

One of the best disc golf coaching videos I have ever seen. The way you communicate the problem, examine the issues, explain how to go about implementing a form change, and then the data to back it up...amazing work. Expertly communicated and produced! Love this slightly different format with lab, field, and course shots. The "data series" experiments are killing it too, its a huge benefit to be able to back up your observations with objective evidence. Scientifically, your sample size and number of reps are too small, but we'll let that go, especially since you acknowledge this as bro science ;)

when pool leagues got cancelled during the pandemic I switched to disc golf and never looked back. I used to be a really good pool player, maybe top 30 in the state but pros are on another level all together. I used to say I know WHAT to do, my arm just won't do it every time. I could watch pros and I knew what they were going to shoot next and how they'd shoot it, I understood it to a depth far greater than my capabilities. The next step of being a good coach is to be able to break down complex concepts into simple to digest speech. You are totally there and I feel like I am watching the beginning of something special, "I knew him when"

Thanks for this. The "fact" that form changes don't happen overnight really changes the mindset. Yesterday I threw about 120 putters and today about 100 drivers with this video in mind. I haven't measured my speed yet but I seem to be getting the same or more distance with less effort. I throw putters into a backstop of a baseball field (about 220ft). Now, with same effort, the discs aren't just getting to the backstop, they are smashing in to it at about the 5ft level. And, bonus!, because I'm smoother, they are grouping together significantly better. Accuracy has improved.

I've tried but the backstop is about 25 feet tall and so far I'm not getting over it. I do, errantly, throw over the side fences and dugouts. Throwing out from home plate, the gully behind the center field fence keeps me focused on not putting to much power in to the shot. @@OverthrowDiscGolf

You are picking up a very important point I have always repeated in my life as a former high school teacher and also as a sports coach for semi professional u21 teams in another sport. Look at some of the best football (soccer) coaches in the world: Mourinho, Tuchel, Nagelsmann, Klopp, Eriksson, Rangnick, Wenger (and even Guardiola to a degree) and so many more where mediocre players at best. Very rarely do you get a superb player who becomes a great coach like Zidane. Most of the time the "top players" are mediocre coaches (e.g. Henry, Scholes, Matthäus or Maradona), because its just not the same. You can be a great coach without ever been a great player. Keep it up Josh!
@CherryB0mb333
@CherryB0mb333 11 ай бұрын
The important point that you’re missing (most of the people you’ve listed have admitted to this) is that you have to be able to do something at a high level at one time to be able to coach. If I had form like josh and maxed out at ma1 then I’d probably make a 20 minute mental gymnastics video too.

Also just mathematically makes sense. There's FAR FAR FAR more people who were never pro athletes than those that were and they're the ones that've held the overwhelming majority of those positions throughout history. It's rare for a great player to even step in to the position to have a chance to fail at it.
@peter007crouch
@peter007crouch 11 ай бұрын
@@derpderpin1568 In order to answer that, we would need to know the actual percentages of players (good or bad) who try. I don't have that information. I could see that it is *more likely* that you become a great coach after a great career as a players, however it is not a guarantee. But even if we ignore the part, where I state that great players rarely make great coaches, the main point still stands: You can be a great coach without ever been a great player. Some of the names I put in there were never even professional footballers (some were, but most were not in a very good club and/or a national team).

Ginny Pig Josh: I have altered my form to minimize the forward momentum lag and has further reduced my rounding by limiting the amount of time I can reach back during the lag as well as, reduced the forward lean at release as you pointed out in the form review. So the change....if you wish to try. I start reach back/walk by the disc at the same time as my X step is occuring, so as my brace foot is moving to final plant, the disc is also moving forward eliminating the reach bag lag created. For me the results have been better aiming, farther distance, no rounding. Yay!!! Continue to create educational content. Aloha!

I feel like we are seeing all cylinders fire from Josh and the O.T. team here and might even be seeing the re evolution in disc golf insider tips right before our eyes. The effort put in on this is insane and we all know Coach Josh and the O.T. team is reviewing the tape and only getting better and us better or should I say Im confident that I know its only going to get better and get us better from here. 👏👏👏

Excellent video, with a great message. The player/coach line gets blurred in every sport I've ever seen. Exceptional athletes and players do not always (or even often) make great coaches. Teaching is a skill, and it is not a natural byproduct of performing well. Someone that is both a high-level competitor, and a great coach, is quite rare.

That's really the hardest part of coaching. People don't understand that as a coach you have to constantly try things. So, I'd say it like this. There are coaches like... Stokley for example. He teaches a "I know how to play disc golf, I'll teach you to play like me" method of teaching. I'm sure there is some more to it, but that's the jist of what him and many others do. Then there are coaches to are literally experimenting with things and constantly learning and re-learning over and over again. I cannot be a good player because I don't practice ever to be a good player. I practice to teach you 15 different shot shapes and all sorts of other goofie crap so people when they come to me. "hey I wanna learn to throw overstable backhand rollers." I got them, its not something I have to say "hey wait like a week while I practice again to show you." As a coach, you need to decide if you wanna be good at golf or not, or you wanna be good at coaching. And the people I play with, they don't care that I'm good at golf. They know I coach, they have seen me play really good, or do things that most people cant. Why? Because someone has to learn it, and to try and keep a bag of tricks to teach others at any point, you cannot practice being good at just golfing on a golf course.

EDIT: Similar to the golf swing we keep the arms in front of the body to prevent "getting stuck" (dg equivalent to rounding). Hurts power efficiency a ton! Never thought to apply this to the trail arm in DG. So small but seems to harmonize sequencing which very clearly increased your efficiency. Good shit cause im hyped to try this out in a few! CLICK BAIT! BUT FOR REAL! Haha thanks for the vid! haven't even watched it. I just know. Also... how far... jk love yall!

Hey Josh, question! Icebergtv recently made a video explaining how less spin will cause a disc to have more turn. We know from other OT videos that that more fingers under the rim seems to increase spin. So if some players struggle with turning and burning putters with a power grip, why do they tend to find success in switching to a fan grip? It seems like the adjustment should be to add spin, but theoretically, the fan grip should be reducing it.

I would imagine it is where the index finger is. It’s very easy to mess pressure points up with power grip on putter. If that index finger slides under and hooks under the rim it can get caught on release.

Now that we have the data, can you talk about how speed and spin relate to distance? How many mph of speed is 100 rpms of spin worth when it comes to distance? Can you isolate improving just speed, or just RPM, and if so, which yields faster results for distance? For accuracy? Love to be able to represent distance as a function of the digital values captured by the technology. Just some future video ideas for you.

We were just talking about that! Unfortunately we don’t have the means to test those to the extent we need to in order to give you an answer.

I coach... Super good points on coaching v playing... Maybe you should choose a LUT for each of your personas? Ambient music choices are solid. Good work sir.

When *ripping* up, you're pushing down - your weight *increases* on the front foot. It's when the arm is coming down that you "get light". When it simply comes up in flow, it's somewhat null, but as soon as it rips up, you're pushing down to make that happen. Good call with the sledge hammer. I've done lots of this stuff with diving and gymnastics and throwing people, discs, and balls; in my experience counterintuitive is the rule with kinetics and proprioception. Really like that sledge hammer... I use a riding crop for teaching wrist action with frisbees - has me thinking. Oh - good point on the ginea pig... I prefer crash test dummy, myself... Peace~

Like always, great content. I believe the gap between 53 and 58 is much easier to close than say between 60 and 65. It seems like there’s a level of athleticism that is required to get into the mid 60s and higher. The fast twitch muscle and control is really hard to acquire later in life if you weren’t an athlete of sorts in youth.

Personally getting from 60 to 65 is a huge jump in effort for me.

@@OverthrowDiscGolf I was recently on a speed gun. I’ll share my insights. I was 58 every single time stand still. I was 56-63 with run up. I was 61-66 at spike hyzer angle. Interesting how the run up sometimes took speed away. This experience also confirmed what I all ready knew , which is that I throw farther on hyzer. I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. I can rip 350-370 on nearly a spike hyzer angle but only 350-415 on a flip on with some flex. I believe my hips or shoulders are generating more rotation when I reach down to up rather than back to forward.
