What is the definition of comedy. "Professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches, intended to make an audience laugh." If you don't know a comedians platform and the type of comedy they perform then don't be surprised if they offend your sensibilities. Don't go if you don't like their format or style of humor. A comedian is a type of artist. While most in the audience love his or here comedy others may not. Turn the channel or go home if you are offended. It's called freedom of speech and their should be no subject a comedian can't tell jokes about. Comedians that are not politically correct are the funniest to me. There should not be anything a comedian says that people laugh at become controversial. There are clean jokes and there are dirty jokes that people tell. Some people cuss and swear and some comedians don't have to to get there laughs. You can't please everyone so the 70s, 80s and 90s humor was the best. This political incorrectness is bullshit and should not affect a comedian's ability to make people laugh. It's their job. If you don't like it then f off.

Too often ppl w/ influential voices criticize (fairly and unfairly) Biden, the whole administration, dems etc, w/ out highlighting that dems are usually the much better option on most issues. There’s clear evidence that movies like Top Gun cause huge spikes in military recruitment. The DoD works with Hollywood and the video game industry, and spends huge sums of money on them because those things make teenagers want to join the military and kill people. When the US military already acknowledges that producing Top Gun and Call of Duty translates into more 18-year-olds boys willing to kill people in Iraq, how is it still taboo to suggest that films and games predispose kids to violence? They instill a fascination of guns like the M16 and AR-15, and they make killing look cool.

I spent my childhood, during the 80s, in 3 different countries, one of them being the US. Even then, the US society was more broken than the others : kids getting home from school alone with no supervision until after diner, no family day with kids and parents, kids explicitly talking about sex and how to get high in the 6th grade, enormous middle and high schools where kids change classes and classmates for every different subject thus creating a further sens of anonymity and aloness, etc... Young people have watched the same movies and played the same video games for decades. Only in the US do you see recurring mass shootings and kids guarded at schools as if they were inmates in a prison.

You really nail it here, I believe you are absolutely on to the real problems we have in the US. The "individualism" we have in the US turns out to be more of alienation, anonymous, and a lack of community/cohesiveness. I moved to Germany after high school, and I was so confused by German society. I kept noticing how everyone is more together, more cohesive, less drama, less fighting/arguing, and a real sense that the larger community wants peace love and happiness. They are more politically aware of what's going on in the local and regional governments. I could go on and on... the police treat others with dignity and respect, you rarely see beggars/homeless folks (compared to the US), and people have HEALTHCARE as a human right.(also pharmaceutical advertisement to consumers is illegal) I was confused as a young man because at that point in my life I was under the impression that the US was the best the world has done, no one could touch the US we are far superior. Turns out, I didn't know a damn thing. We need fundamental changes in this country, a cultural revolution if you will....

I agree with both of you, I'm from a small country in Europe (Bulgaria), where we have a multitude of problems, too. I now live in Germany and I have lived in Italy and spent some time in Switzerland in China. I've never been to the US, but as a lot of people around the world I follow this project that started noble and turned into a fucking nightmare. We all watch violent movies and play violent games, there have been multiple studies that disprove the link between such and real life violence. We also have shootings from time to time between gangs and stabbings and such, but that is part of life, as long as there are illegal activities to be performed (which can be solved by legalization - for example prostitution in Germany is legal, so there are low levels of human trafficking and exploitation of minors, cause they all have to be registered, pay taxes and go through medical checkups; same shit goes for drugs). Nothing however on the level in the US. Also you can't kill 50 ppl with a machete, I mean srsly... The big problem we have around the world is poverty. The bullshit phrase of you can pull yourself by the bootstraps you love to use in the US is an absolute joke. Yes it is true that today compared to any other time in history there is a much bigger chance of upward mobility, but this is true because of the institutions that support you. I never would have been able to make it where I am today, if when I didn't go to a good school as a kid and I could concentrate on my studies instead of dodging bullets or having to help my parents with paying the bills. I never would have made it in Germany, if they didn't have free universities with free healthcare for all students and the ability for students to work without paying taxes. We all have to remember that while we are wasting our breath to argue about bathroom bills, pronouns, race, religion and what is the definition of socialism and how awful it is, we are not talking about the billionaires who bleed us dry and live above the law, while we fight for scraps and to live with dignity. We don't talk how the capitalism we live in is not the capitalism we study in economic textbooks, the free market is an illusion. We don't talk about how the main goal of every company isn't to better society or to take care of its workers, without whom it wouldn't exist, but to maximize profits, at any cost. I can go on and on, but at the end of the day, no one gives a shit, because we get used to being content with little and to turn our heads away from the misfortune and suffering of others.

@@dyanko91 Well said, I would just add that here in America, the problems we have are class problems. The 'elites' control the narratives, they own the politicians thru legalized bribery (Citizens United ruling) and they own most of the media. The so called elites push endless propaganda about the distraction issues (culture war) you mentioned ie bathroom bills, demonizing immigrants, policing speech, etc They do this to keep the middle and lower class distracted from the real issues - income inequality, a lack of public services for all Americans, military industrial complex, legalized bribery, and restructuring taxes. The average American is very apathetic and they are so busy just trying to survive, they have no time to do the research into who is fucking them and why, so they are susceptible to the extreme rightwing propaganda or the corporate democrat propaganda. We are so divided in America because this is the way the elites have intended it, its divide and conquer. Keep the middle class scared of the lower class and keep the lower class scared of the "other", the immigrants coming to steal your job... all the while the rich get richer and all of us get poorer.

@@jameslisle7775 Yes - But when one Party rises to the level where they conspire to illegally overthrow a duly-elected government, by concocting a scheme to throw out votes to instead install their own set of fake-electors, don't you think that this rises to a whole new level of corruption? Conway - when she's cornered into a position where she cannot deny the illegality of what her fellow Republican's conspired to do, changes the rhetoric to "Why are you still so obsessed with Trump?" It's clear that she would rather have the nation ignore what was perhaps the most serious of crimes in modern US history, by arguing that there's no benefit in prosecuting what happened in the past. Or that by going after Trump and his co-conspirators this will so divide the nation, that it would never recover. Pity that she didn't pose the question about what the actions of those who tried to overthrow the government would do to the nation.

I know this was 2 weeks ago but I feel that I have to say thank you for what you said on Real Time, calling Hollywood out for violent shows and it’s affect on people. Honestly back when the Will Smith, Chris Rock issue was big news I made comment to my husband about some of the violent characters that actors portray and how we can expect them while verbally espousing great ideals to not be affected by the time and effort they put into setting all that aside in order to take on unhealthy personas, many of which have little value outside of pure “action/violent” entertainment. And as you point out a much bigger issue when we look at the broader societal issues correlated with exposure to violent entertainment. Definitely an issue that I believe we as society can benefit from bringing into discussion more, so thank you again.

Dr West is right about culture. Look at Windsor, right across the river from Detroit, which has also been faced with a decline in the auto industry. The population is about 400,000, yet at one point they went 27 months straight without experiencing a single homicide. That's pretty extraordinary. Imagine living in a city where one homicide is big news.

So... now explain to me how the same movies are shown in Australia, Canada, the UK, Germany, etc., but those countries don't have nearly the same number of mass shootings as we do. Also -- when I was a kid, you know what all my friends loved? Worshipped? Emulated on the playground? Yes-- John Wayne shooting Indians by the hundreds. I don't think I know anyone who went on to be a mass killer. How do you explain that?

It's not the movies, it's the fetishization of fiction. It takes restraint to separate reality from fiction, and it takes selflessness. As an American living in Canada, while Canadians are inherently very selfish, Americans can be significantly more so (compare compliance with health policy as an example). It's not the media itself, it's the condensation of media (and subsequent attachment to a lot of media)...further deluding a population of highly educated people.
