This is an older video but everyone need to pay attention to this. There is a huge difference between training hard to stress your body into muscle growth and grinding yourself into the pavement. I’ve been there, took about 8 months to overcome the damage I did to myself by overdoing it the wrong way. If your grip is going away, tingling in places, waking up at night on fire you need to step it back.

I agree with Jeff. The issue is that there is confusion about what "overtraining" means. To most people, overtraining means working the same muscle group, such as biceps, every single day and never allowing them adequate time to recover between workouts. Whereas the type of "overtraining" that Jeff advocates simply means putting 100% effort into each and every workout that you do, which by most people's standards would be considered overtraining.

OVER TRAINING = UNDER RESTING OVER TRAINING is not so much linked to actual TRAINING, it is linked to not RESTING enough it is almost impossible to overwork the muscle in a single day, but it is possible to overwork it within a few days without rest , so simply said: OVER TRAINING = UNDER RESTING
@TrevDawgRS10 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY, its not always what people are doing in the gym, but what they are doing when they aren't in the gym. Eating like shit, barely sleeping, taking a ridiculous amount of stimulants like preworkout and energy drinks, smoking, drinking and partying and so on. All of these things have a toll on the cnetral nervous system. although being in the gym for too long does factor in.

no one can argue with Jeff. i have such high respect for Jeff, i really dont need to listen yo nobody. there is not a thing Jeff doesn't know than some ither trainer can tell me. jeff is absolutely right about over training. i only train for 30-45 minutes a day (after warm up) with very high intensity and get a hell of a workout, and i come the next day with plenty of energy. training long just means you ate taking longer rest period, and not putting enough effort in your sets to feel the burn on every workout.

@worldwideachievers12346 жыл бұрын
In his book, Making Your Bed", the Admiral described while during Navy Seal training they were put on extra physical training at end of day based on not performing as well as the other Seals for that day. He said it didn't make sense because they needed the rest like the others instead of doing more physical training which was more a punishment. Guess what? The Admirals group began to out swim and out perform the other teams and this was AFTER 2 extra hours a days of grueling physical training. Many would believe they would wind up ringing the bell and quitting but they actually became stronger and faster. This exemplifies what Jeff is saying. But how many people are that dedicated? It starts with what's between the ears. And yes eat properly and get rest. On the other hand if your injured then that's different.

1. A proper sunburn hurts like hell, just the idea of touching it will make you wince. 2. Will take days to recover, days you could've spent enjoying the sun and the beach. 3: Long term issue: higher risk of skin cancer if you habitually take this route to a tan. 4. Could've gotten the same amazing tan without the abovementioned issues by not getting sunburned in the first place. (5. you look like a fool during the sunburned phase) All of these issues can be mapped almost 1:1 to overtraining. 1. Hurts like hell, 2. takes days (at the least) to recover to get normal lifting power back, time that you could've been doing proper workouts, 3. higher risk of injuries in long term if done enough times, 4. Aforementioned could all be avoided and still come out with the same physique (minus the long-term risks and the pain).

I can tell you this when I hit 32 things started changing fast. I was used to doing very very high volume for every muscle group once a week. When I say high I mean HIGH like 25-30 sets for muscle group. When I was in my 20s I could get away with it. But when I hit 31 I started overtraining. I was tired constantly like all the time, absolutely zero libido. It went to the point where it lasted for close to a year and I couldn't figure out why so I went to the doctor thinking something was seriously wrong with me. Turns out I was empty on vitamine D, vitamine B, and amino acids. So I started taking all these 3 and upped my protein and overall calorie intake. Still nothing. I started drinking coffeine, still nothing. My test came back from the doctor and he said my hormones was all messed up due to overtraining for so long. Now I'm on my way back, I cut down my volume a ton. Instead of the 20-30 set a bodypart I now stick with maybe 9 sets for shoulders, 11 for chest, 15 for legs, 14 for back, and maybe 6-8 for biceps and triceps. The libidio comes and goes, but I was told by the doctors that I had been overtraining for so long, it would take me some time to get back to 100%. I can't workout on an empty stomach anymore like I could in the past. So that kind of sucks. I know what overtraining can cause and I learned it the hard way. Trust me it SUCKS! And overtraining DOES exist.

In general, too much of anything is bad, but the limits of 'too much' differ for everyone. And the same applies to fitness training. Your lifestyle, work, age, sex, natural weight, etc determines a lot on how much time you need for each type of workout (cardio, weights, etc) A guy sitting in an office all day obviously needs more cardio training than a delivery man of the same age if their fitness goals are the same. And the comparisons continue to differ like that in all other aspects. The key is to listen to your body, and make the necessary adjustments continuously as you go along, but never just take days off training or train shorter hours just because someone said it's good.

Your videos are great. They have helped me lots. I agree with pretty much everything you're saying in this video. I focus on the three powerlifting movements & the assistance exercises to support that. Overtraining for me tends to be working out too many days & not enough days recovering, poor sleep or poor nutrition, stress, etc. I start to feel the drain on my immune system, start to feel run down & eventually start getting colds n flu. Finding that line is the hard part.

For those who say they train for more than two hour's, that's because for more than half the time the are looking at their phone or talking to some one or to busy staring at the mirror trying to make a muscle come out that will never be there because all they are doing is starting at the mirror. Your exercise is the time of day when it's just your mind and your body trying to achieve perfection in unison. I have 2 Full Body Sessions per week in the weight room which last around 2-2.5hrs each. My weight training involves Power Snatches, DEADLIFTS, OHP, SQUATS, Glute Thrusts, PULL-UPS and a couple of accessory exercises for tricep and back. Then I have 3 morning sessions, in each one of those I do a light jog for around 5-8 minutes, bowl for around 30-35 minutes at a stretch (Cricket), then I move onto Broad Jumps (5*5), then some medicine ball slams and throws (around 60-70 reps divided in 10 reps per set ).Then I have 3 core sessions in the week. Each one is around 20-25 minutes long. And lastly, I walk (at around 3-4km/h) for 2 hrs a day, 7 days a week. My nutrition is quite up to the mark. I am fulfilling my daily caloric requirements. I am 5'10'' and weigh 72kg. I take around 3000 calories and around 4.5 ltrs of water a day(Weather is quite hot, avg. day time temp. around 35-40 deg. celcius) . My sleep time os around 6-7 hrs a day on average.. Some days I sleep for 8-9 hrs and some days for 5-6 hrs. I was going well till around 19th- 20th March but then suddenly I started losing my explosiveness in power moves like snatch. I also started losing my grip strength. I hit my PR 100kg in DL on 19th March and then it was all downfall in the later sessions. Same with Power snatch and OHP. I had to remove 5-7kg from the bar. But the only movement I am progressing in is squats. But other movements are affected and I am now weaker at those.. Am I OVERTRAINING?? If not, then why this downfall?? Any science backed suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!!🙂

What is being described here is closer to "Progressive Overload" techniques, not overtraining. Doing something differently is going to get your body or muscles to respond, which is needed when you reach a plateau of growth, strength or fitness level. Challenge yourself and change a training variable eg: weight, rep range, set number, shorter rest time, time under tension, negatives, supersets, drop sets etc.

Your video is excellent. It changed the way i train. Many bodybuilders such as yourself are able to push themselves enough to make gains but after thinking about the content of your video i started splitting my routine into 2 days. I work my chest on one day then the next day when it is a little tired i start off slow and work it again. This gets the blood into it and it really works the chest muscles and gets a great pump that i don't get on day 1.The next day i have DOMs like i used to when i started training. I will rest my chest then for around 3 days. I used to be careful of overtraining but after watching your video i realised i was no where near overtraining.

I thank you guys so much I used to over do my workouts and seen no results recently I started watching your videos and I'm finally starting to see results I found that I was just over doing it and that I was cheating (like your other video) my workout. Now my chest is starting to harden and I'm starting to see my abs. You guys gave me the confidence and helped so much!! I will keep my heart into and will send the results to your site when I achieve the body I'm training for!!(:

Thanks Jeff. I knew I got to the point of overtraining when I developed insomnia and started getting weaker each time to the gym. A week off, back to sleeping, and then gains resumed.

Same thing happening to me right now. Sleep quality down due to overtraining. It's because we want results faster.

Awesome video! Been working out long enough for over an hour, now I realize that's the worst you can do (if you're used to working out, at least). One hour max, full power with enough overall rest is the way to go!

To me this isn't describing overtraining. This is simply upping the intensity to stimulate your muscles to grow and adapt to the stress that you are inducing on your body

Overtraining= pushing the muscles to the point of injury. Anything else is fair game to workout with.

I'm a fairly new gym goer, always fit, but soccer fit as opposed to built fit. I would be smashed by an hour into my workout to the point where I could drop weight by 50% and struggle to get 10 reps. I never understood how people would say they workout for hours. I can do an hour of cardio+and hour of lifting but that's different. This makes me feel better knowing I'm feeling the way I should.

I feel like it's really hard for people to appreciate what you mean exactly by overtraining, until they actually experience the symptoms to feel that "physiological and neurological" state you're trying to get at. The insomnia and nasty heart rate. After a night of those, any person would dial it back a bit and understand that less is more.

This video is old but that happen to me recently. I used to workout and I stopped for a while. Then I started and I was feeling so great that I started doing squats with 100 lbs and in a week I was doing 225lbs. The problem is that I did squats for almost 2 weeks 7 days a week. Some days I did squats in the morning and upper body at noon. I was feeling great, but, after 2 weeks I wasn't able to do 225 lbs any more, I was so tired that I didn't feel like working out any more. I learned in the hard way that nutrition and resting periods are even more important than the workout itself.

I changed my workout about 8 weeks ago, from ca. 1,5h to 40-50 minutes, cutting my rest perion between the sets from 2 Minutes to 40 seconds, same workout, different times. I feel like i´m die in every workout but i push me trough. And it worked, i feel better, look better, get stronger as before. Thank you very much for this expierence!!!!

One of the best videos I have seen, some people just want add more and more at the gym with out changing diet and recovery to match what they put in the gym, training is just part of the recipe and you can't increase just one ingredient with out altering the result.
@brendonolivier57435 жыл бұрын
I can relate to this video because I always trained for like 2 hours but could not see results then I just worked harder but using less time in the gym used more time to recover and started eating better and I actually started to see some serious changes so yes I agree work hard as hell but dont make the work outs to long

For the last month or so, I've been doing a 2-day split, working chest, back, and legs on day one to do all the heavy compound exercises ( squats deadlifts, barbell rows, and presses), and shoulders, arms, and abs on day two, and I would say I've been doing very high intensity, going past failure on at least 2/3 of my sets on average. It's been too much for me, I'm exhibiting all the signs of overtraining, and have been thinking about lowering intensity for some of my workouts, increasing reps, so say one workout I'll do 15-20 rep sets that are not as high intensity and not to failure, then next time around hitting 8-12 and hitting failure, then repeat. Do you think this will help my muscles to recover faster, or will I make less gains in the long run because I'm not training with high intensity on every workout?
@igorzhukov53907 жыл бұрын
This means you need to shake thing up, change your workout routine, include new exercizes, ideally something you've never tries before or for a long time. Our body is a master of adaptation, even musdlr growth itself is a very definition of adaptation.

Bro I trust you, overtraining it’s always negative, yesterday I watched a video on KZbin it’s completely BS, cause the guy talked about overtraining as a positive thing!!!! you are completely right working out for 2 hours or more it means there is something wrong, I used to work out 3 days a week, 2 days upper and one day lower, moreover, I needed to work out for 2 to 3 hours to complete the upper body session, I could handle that plan for 3 weeks only after that I collapsed, I felt my body had no energy at all as I don’t use anything just protein shake, after which I changed my working out plan to 5 days a week, now I spend about one hour at the gym. It’s medically approved that you need some rest for recovery and overtraining leads to injuries and lots of problems. Bro just a question how can I know that I need to take some days off from the gym ? And how long the rest should be to avoid muscle mass loss ?
@hbo7gc7t235 жыл бұрын
I thought overtraining was not giving your body enough time to recover and therefore having a negative effect on the muscles

I changed my routine to an upper / lower split 3 weeks ago. Each workout now takes me 1hr 20 to 1 hr 40. In the past 3 weeks I've gained really good strength and much better than my bro split that used to take 45mins

When I work out everyday I balance it out with A 3 day marathon ,, One day I workout in the morning, and the next day I workout at night, then I workout in the morning the next day to shock my muscles ,,, chest and arms one day, lower body one day, then full body the next day ,,, rest one day then repeat!! , also eat quality foods get good sleep and don’t forget to do stretches on the off day 👍🏼

I agree with chilled euphoria. I was always tired a day or two after my workouts when i first started working out, i figured i was over training. My workouts were about 1 1/2 hrs. I did some research and it turns out i was not sleeping enough and i was not consuming enough calories. Now i get an extra sleep eat healthy carbs and enough calories and i can train and recover with no problems. Diet and rest are very important until your body builds a high tolerance for long workouts.
