So just to let you know, Genji and Hanzo’s father was the leader of the Shimada Clan (Japanese Mafia). Since Hanzo was the oldest brother his father groomed him to take over the clan when he died, Genji on the other hand lived a carefree life of luxury, spending most of his time in the arcade. After his father’s death, Hanzo took over the clan, not long after his advisors told him to straighten out his wayward younger brother so he could help lead the clan. Hanzo confronted his brother that night and Genji refused, but as he was walking away Hanzo attacked him from behind. Hanzo, believing his brother was dead, fled the scene. However, Genji was barely alive and would have died if Overwatch hadn’t found him. Angelia Ziegler (mercy built him a cybernetic body because he was so badly hurt. Genji later joined Blackwatch, a secret organization within Overwatch that did jobs Overwatch didn’t want anyone knowing about. Later he left to go explore the world like a nomad, he wanted to find peace and learn how to accept his new body. He met an Omnic named Zenyatta who helped him except his new body and forgive his brother. Genji then went to confront his brother, and you know the rest. I believe this cinematic takes place right before or right after the recall, but I can’t confirm. I’ve been playing the game since it came out and have been keeping up with the lore so if you have questions just ask :) (Also sorry this is so long 😅)

Also when Hanzo said “real life is not like the stories our father told us” that was kind of an in joke since the narrator of this is hanzo and genji’s father telling them the tale of the dragon lords as kids. So real life ended up being exactly like their father told them.

I really like the line "Real Life is not like the stories our father told us." It's in direct conflict with the whole design of the cinematic, and it makes the distinction that while Genji and Hanzo's relationship is similar to that of the dragons, their story is a completely unique one, and it doesn't end simply with "Everyone lived happily ever after"

Just so you know Kat, in the Overwatch universe, most of the "suits" you're seeing are actually prosthetics/cybernetics. For instance, Gengi is missing most of his body, that suit really only contains vital organs and a portion of his head :P His Brother really messed him up :P

I know this is old. But I just wanted to say, if you dig into their back story more, you will find that both of them ran a Yakuza/Assassins' organization together. But they disagreed on many issues and Hanzo attempted to kill Genji. He mourned for the loss of his brother, and left the organization himself to live among the commoners, causing discourse in his former life and job. The story of the actual Dragons is a good metaphor though for them
