this song is about his previous record label Republic Records. his record label wants to change his image and style of music (like Justin Bieber, One Direction kinda lyrics) to make more money off of him. "let me be who I wanna be." -he wants to stick with his style of music which is Electronica/Pop however his record label wants to be him a full on pop star kind of music singing about hotchicks, sex, etc. (you know what music we have today) "Hey, I'm an oddity and that's alright" - yes Owl City's style of music is pretty odd and full of imagination. (like fireflies) "let me fly and follow my dreams." -he wants to break from the contract..and stick with his tyle of music that has full of imagination. "thanks for the Fiji Water.." -he wish he just refuse the offer signing under republic records and just thank them for giving him a "Fiji Water"

I don't mean to disappoint you but fiji water is a water bottle brand in the u.s. It's a bit of an expensive brand too. That said, owl city's songs have strange names (alligator sky? Saltwater room?) so it's not impossible for it to actually be about fiji in some way. Personally, though I'm leaning to the song being somewhat based on how his initial reaction to his success went and, due to fiji water's relative expense, the product rather than the islands. Sorry, I'm sure your country is great but I think the song is more likely referring to the water bottle brand.

He turned down a record deal that coulda made him famous faster it seems. It's likely the agents that interacted with him kept saying he was lucky to be picked, but because he's a Christian, he's saying "there's no such thing as luck" since everything God allows to happen. He "took a leap of faith" since there's "nowhere else to go but up", whether he took the deal or not. It takes a secure and self-confident person to reject a life-changing career nonetheless, even if his interview didn't go as he expected ("If I knew what I know now ... I'd say, 'All this is new to me, but here's how it's gonna be'). Maybe he would have liked to keep the record deal but put his foot down and bargain to do things his way. It's probably a bittersweet period for him. (I fact-checked, he got the record with with the same company Universal Republic months later after smoothing out differences. 🙂)

I love how deeply personal this album is to Adam. I don't think this album strays too far from his early stuff. Sure, his lyrics are more straightforward, but the music and titles are still quirky just as they've always been. Let Adam grow how he wants to as an artist. He's doing what he loves and he's obviously proud of the direction his music is going. Owl City fan forever!
@ads10357 жыл бұрын
For a long time now, I've actually wondered exactly how much Adam likes composing what he composes. It started when I realized How I Became the Sea was about his musical career, and the 2nd verse of that song has always made me afraid that he doesn't actually enjoy what he does, despite how much us fans enjoy what he creates. A few other commenters have touched on this, so I'll reiterate whats been said - I feel like this song has a hint of regret behind it. The water bottle says 2008, and the lyrics mention Christmas. Well, Adam signed on with Universal in February 2009, and even the Wikipedia article on Owl City mentions some disagreements between the studio and Adam. "I ain't a spin doctor, but thanks for the offer" - If he knew what he knows now, would he have turned down the contract deal? I've heard of bands in the past making terrible albums simply to get out of their contract... I wonder what the terms of Adam's contract are, and, again, if he legitimately enjoys his work. Ah, but I didn't come here to over-analyze fun songs. I'm just happy to hear some more Owl City! And the autobiographical spin on this album is so incredibly fascinating. It brings to mind how Adam described Port Blue: "If by chance you ever feel as though you’ve come to know these songs, please consider yourself a friend because in a manner of speaking, you know me."
@amberrizzi12075 жыл бұрын

Everyone who is saying they miss Adam's old songs all the time are making it sound like Adam's newer songs are terrible or something! I've listened to every song he's ever written and I've never hated one! I've LOVED every single one of his albums! None of his songs are bad! I don't understand what people mean when they say how his music has changed so drastically (for the worse). Every album that comes out, all I hear is Adam's music getting better and better. Whether you find them different or not, they all have something in common. They all have amazing uplifting sound to them that make you feel happy, content, and relaxed. I will never love any artist's music like I love Adam's for as long as I live. I just wish people would quit complaining that they don't like his new songs as much as his old ones. :I There's a difference between not liking something and just plain hating on it. I never hear any constructive criticism anymore, just plain hate. Edit: Yes, I have heard "All my Friends" and I did not hate it. It's actually catchy if you don't immediately decide you don't like it before you listen to more than 30 seconds of it.

I don't really like Owl City that much. However, he does remind me of Neil Cicierega and even a tiny bit of Bill Wurtz. I recommend you check them out if you haven't heard of them already if you like Owl City.

Here is the lyrics: Got an email at 22 Told me I could be star On a plane for the first time I couldn't wait to start Landed at JFK Father Christmas picked me up Checked into a dream hotel and I thought There's no such thing as luck I walked into my interview and I thought There’s no such thing as luck And oh, if I only knew then what I know now I’d stand like a one-man-band and I'd say All this is new to me but Here’s how it’s gonna be And I'd say Hey, there is more to me than meets the eye Let me be who I wanna be And I’d say Hey, I'm an oddity and that's all right Let me fly and follow my dreams Then I'd say Hey thanks for the weekend A good time was had by all And I’d say Hey thanks for the weekend I ain’t a smooth-talker but thanks for the Fiji water Dinner under a palm tree I had so much on my mind Amazed by the bright lights I stayed up half the night And boy I took a leap of faith With nowhere else to go but up I walked into my interview and I thought There's no such thing as luck Hey, there is more to me than meets the eye Let me be who I wanna be And I’d say Hey, I'm an oddity and that's all right Let me fly and follow my dreams Then I'd say Hey thanks for the weekend A good time was had by all And I’d say Hey thanks for the weekend I ain’t a spin doctor but thanks for the offer And by the way Hey thanks for the weekend You know I had a ball And I’d say Hey thanks for the weekend I ain’t a smooth-talker but thanks for the Fiji water I laughed when I got back home and I thought There’s no such thing as luck

I listened to this music a lot when I was in high school, preparing for the college entrance interview. This song helped me calm down, and I felt kind of determined when I heard this song. I did the interview thinking, I'm an oddity, but it will all be fine. After all, I finished the interview without making a big mistake, and I'm now a student of the university that I really wanted to enter. This song makes me very nostalgic.

8 seconds in and the sonic footprint of the music industry is nowhere to be found. 2 minutes in and the man has made his point. First time listening to this album. As a former 13-year-old hearing Fuzzy Blue Lights for the first time, and former 14-year-old hearing Ocean Eyes for the first time, this song is so neat. Looking forward to the rest of the album. Thank you, sir.

The thing about Owl City is the fact that he's after what he loves, that includes spread his love and music to his fans. All of his songs have meanings or stories behind them, something to share. That's the reason I love Owl City, an inspiration and a true artist. Thank you for releasing your Reel 1 on my birthday, too. Best birthday gift ever. I am really happy he finally released a song i really like after such a long time. It has elements of his old style during 2008-2011 but also new ones which i think is awesome One can not expect him to make the same music over and over for years, there has to be room for development and variation. Really looking forward to the album next year.
