Rear Door Hinge Swap on 2019+ Mercedes Sprinter

For anyone else watching, that smaller bolt is an e10 (e-torx). The suggested 8mm stripped one of mine. You should be able to get a set at a big box store pretty cheap. Comes in handy on this vehicle!

I installed the Owl Vans 180 hinges on my 2021 Sprinter using this video. Three things not specifically covered in the video that you might find helpful to know: 1) Check the door closure after each individual hinge is replaced. This ensures that if the door doesn't close right you know which hinge to tweak. 2) The video talks about checking panel gaps for evenness. I found the most important panel gap to pay attention to is the gap between the two doors, not the gap on the hinge side. 3) My Owl Hinges did not come with the plastic bumper stops for when the doors are fully opened. I had to remove the bumpers from my original hinges and put them on the new hinges. Note that the bumper stops are hinge-location specific (e.g. the top passenger side bumper and the bottom passenger side bumper are not the same), so make sure you swap bumpers between the same hinges. Also, when removing the bumpers from the original hinges, you will minimize breakage of the attachment prongs on the bumpers if you push the prongs from the back rather than prying the bumper off from the front.

I am finding that when replacing the top hinge, with the 270s still attached on bottom, the holes don’t line up exactly. Is it necessary to loosen bottom hinge bolts to be able to fit top hinges??

Yes, you need to loosen the bottom one too

I am blown away by the fact that the upper hinges on my 2021 sprinter are attached by 4 bolts that use 3 different drive heads (T45, E10 and 17mm hex). One hinge takes 3 different sockets to remove!!! WTF Mercedes?

If you have a 3rd generation Sprinter (2109+) then you will need to swap the hinges.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me why the doors with the 180 degree hinges installed only open 90 degrees? I just installed the Owl Expedition Tire Carrier and the doors only open 90 degrees. Not a show stopper but perhaps they should be called 90 degree hinges.

Kiokee Crow the 270 hinges don’t have holes. Nothing can be drilled because there I no material drill unfortunately

You don’t need to swap for our products for your year van. The hinge swap is only for the new VS30 3rd gen vans

@@owloffroad Thanks. We like the look of your ladder tire carrier system, however it's not for a spare tire, but rather we're looking for a way to carry our aluminum river raft frame. We think the frame could sit on the tire hoop and then strap the frame to the ladder near the top and strap to the tire hoop. We would need one on each door. What do you think? Would this work?

Naomi Gardner I think that would work but without doing it we can’t be 100%. The best setup would probably be a Ladder + Tire on the driver door and a B2 on the passenger. You could use the posts on the B2 to hold a boat as well

If we had you guys do the install, would you want to see the frame in person first? Or would dimensions and pictures be enough? How far out are you scheduling for installs? We live in Santa Cruz, but can easily figure out how to come up your way.

I think it's to limit the opening of the doors so whatever Owl accessories hanging from the rear doors don't hit the sides of the van.
