Rob and Fab deserve forgiveness, they we're young and naive, managed by a greedy producer

So true, bc their real voices weren't bad at all. We buy albums all the time from people who are mediocre, or just plain suck because they are good looking or can dance. If Grammys or record sales only reflected talent, lots of artists would be stripped of their awards too. Everyone saw them as a joke, but sadly Rob eventually lost his life bc their greedy producer didn't want to take the time to give them a drop of vocal training or even singing lessons. He just wanted to basically make money off of their looks and the real singers voices.

+crystalk17co the ironic part of lip syncing is the INDUSTRY CREATED THIS FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. its ACTUALLY NOT CHEATING. its actually a form of entertainment the industry created to make money. REALLY??? Yess!!!! See if an artist has a live band and actually performs it could cost you or whomever up to $500,000 a gig (for a well known artist), but if the same artist lip syncs that same fee is like $15,000 - $200,000 (again depending upon the artist).

@Snarick Klash Actually they did. Farian first locked them in an airtight contract that he knew they didn't have the financial means to get out of, and only THEN informed them that they wouldn't be singing on the record. Both were young, barely into their 20's, and totally inexperienced and naive, didn't know anyone else in the business and had no money to either go back to Europe or fight the legal battle a contract violation would entail. Farian, on the other hand, was an old pro at the game. That's why he came out totally unscathed while the boys' lives and careers were ruined.

Because even before people found out Milli Vanilli was fronted by lip-synchers, plenty of people at the time already thought them and their music, which was enormously popular, was crap basically. A sketch of them from the comedy show In Living Color at the time confirms this. They were often ridiculed for the synthesized sounds of the songs and their rapping and their lyrics and their highly-stylized hair and fashion and even European origins with their thick accents. Their enormous success and everything that had made them successful made them easy targets for the press.

@RocStarr913

Dale Howard Because the producer and the record labels were making too much money with Milli Vanilli as it was. The producer’s logic at the time was, “‘Girl You Know It’s True’ was a huge hit single, so everybody knows the vocals. We can’t change it now.” Plus, the studio singers in Milli Vanilli took a third from whatever Rob and Fab got, so they would not have made money if Rob and Fab had been allowed to sing. It was unfair to Rob & Fab because they were a big part of why Milli Vanilli was so big. But the music industry is a business and once Rob & Fab could no longer make money for the industry, they were just chewed up and spat out and were made to take the brunt of the backlash against Milli Vanilli.

I was far too young at the time to remember Milli Vanilli but something about Rob's death is very sad and haunting. It's like he was murdered by the greed of the music industry, and the fact that the producer let all of the blame for his scheme fall on the performers. It seems to me like ALL of the blame fell on Rob and Fab, and to me that never seemed right. Without a doubt they were wrong for agreeing to do what they did, but why wasn't Frank Farian tarred and feathered in the press right along with them? And furthermore, and this is somewhat off-topic, but how did Clivilles & Cole essentially get away with the EXACT SAME THING a year later AND manage to maintain their reputations as top in-demand producers?

Cole & Clivilles were sued by Martha Wash. She also sued Black Box and won both cases. Martha was featured on C&C's follow-up cd as well and toured with them. After that she went back to her solo work and that was the end of C&C and Black Box basically.

SO lovely to see him!! He looks FAB! These days they could have stood up & start again (using Auto-Tune & play-backing are normal now), but back in the day, it became a huge scandal. Bigger than it should have been and it wasn't even their fault, - *Don't forget they wanted to sing, but were not allowed to.* He really CAN sing. Not worse than any other artist in the industry these days. In fact, his rapping in the song LIVE in 2008 sounds exactly as the original. (look it up it's here on YT) So, *someone* came up with the idea, produced those songs, someone agreed to sing backstage, *used them* ON stage and made just as much (if not more) money on it/them. Shame that they got all the blame & the rest got away with it. ~ We adored them regardless. Either way, the looks, the show, the way they were on the stage, the videoclips, whether they sang or not, don't forget THEY were Nr.1 worldwide! x

@@TM-se5jf "These guys" didn't hire anyone. They got hired. It used to be commonplace in Europe in the disco era to have studio musicians make records and then the producer would hire a different group to perform live. Frank Farian was one such producer (look up Boney M). Difference was back then, people didn't associate a song with an image right away. Once music videos became powerful, these same producers had a problem. People would be hearing AND seeing the songs being performed at the same time. When Farian did this with Milli Vanilli he realized that if they sounded differently live, the public might not accept it like they used to so he made them fake the live shows too. They were under contract, and also getting paid to jump around on stage and meet girls in their early 20s. As you know, this was all a recipe for tragedy.

Rob was not just dealing with neglect from the industry, he was also dealing with his family disowning him. I am sure that left Rob feeling completely alone. So sad he could not find a way through the worst kind of rejection. He was actually a very good person. Not many people know he grew up in Germany as the only black student who was bullied all the time.

Still super sad, reminds me of the Pussycat Dolls. People don't know the pressure or the lack of control the artists have. Like in PCD, the other girls didn't sing, it wasn't cuz they didn't want to, they weren't allowed to and they were under contract, and regardless, if these powerful industry people tell you you're not gonna sing but you will be a worldwide success are you gonna say no and now risk getting black balled while they find another who will play the game or do you stick it out until you hopefully become powerful enough to take control without fear of being shut out?

MadMaxxieXD What was really sad about PCD is that the girl weren't even a "group", they were actually salaried employees of Interscope to be in that band. Shame, because they all could sing (maybe some better than others) but they could've been a legitimate vocal group had they been allowed to.

when I first arrived in LA I was working out at a gym and out of nowhere this guy approaches me and starts talking to me. He humbly talked about his life as a singer and his passion for what he does. As he's speaking I suddenly realize he looks extremely familiar but couldn't point it out. Before leaving he gave me his info and told me to come watch him sing. A couple of hours later it hit me, it was Fab from Milli Vanilli. Small world...

Milli Vanilli doesn't deserve to end up becoming the definition of debauchery and lies in the music industry, as they were merely models. Truth be told the industry itself has been a sham from the beginning, but it took an obvious blunder for the public audience to agree and place blame on the pretty faces that deceived them, when in fact it was the faces behind the curtain that put it together in the first place. I'm glad he's still making music, despite some ineptitude. (He's not awful, but isn't that great either.) The sad part about it is that it seems like he is doing it because he's obligated himself to redeem something that he's not in control of. Dude is now doing time for a crime he had the misfortune to get caught in.

+Landon Balk ...The clip of the song does not do him justice.. I saw a recent interview where he said music has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. " He is not doing time". He said it was hard to start over after the scandal, however he made a decision to still pursue his dream. He started over. He learned to play guitar, write and produce songs. He took voice lessons and worked with dialect coaches to soften his accent. His English is fluent now. He became a solo artist, a popular DJ in California, he taught French and lectured college students on the pitfalls of the music industry. His career got a huge boost in Amsterdam. He is featured on many collaborations with other artists. You can find most of them on KZbin. He is very active on social media. Check him out and read what he is up to. He seems very peaceful, busy and happy. I am glad he never gave up, things are working out well after all.

what happen to those two guys were terrible, people need to understand that there are people in the position of power or authority can damage other people lives over greed , ignorance, narrow minded thinking. I sense that he can sing but unfortunately I feel that he will never get back to the status he once was but he loves to sing and that will last forever. the sad thing is that these musicians today are singing through auto tune which hides there true voice which in terms is lip syncing through high technology so in some ways these singers today are doing the same thing milli vanilli did back in the day.

These guys were unique and cool as hell back in the late 80's. Everybody afterwards sampled the crap out of that drum pattern in "Girl, You know it's True". It seemed that everyday black men - especially the "B-boyz" I went to school with verbally clowned them mercilessly during their rise and peak of their fame. I think they were jealous because women of all colors LOVED Milli Vanilli. The press/media had a field day when the big secret finally came out. While other people found it amusingly funny, I didn't. I didn't care. As performers, they were the total package. Sometimes I wonder if Frank Farian ever at that time considered what it would have done to the duo if he ever opened his mouth.

If Rob had seeked help, Milli Vanilli would've DEFINITELY have made a comeback, maybe not topping the charts...but as a touring act, just as: Mc Hammer, Vanilla Ice, New Kids On The Block, and of course...even MJ, just to name a few that went through being super "hot" to being turned into a joke and forgotten. But life is cyclical! One day you're up, the other you're down. GREAT NEWS is...when you're up, you might not always be there, but when you're down, you will DEFINITELY not be there forever...so just seek help, and take one day at a time! If you or anyone you know is battling depression due to some fall out or whatever it may be...know: You WON'T be down forever, you will get back up! Seek help and Stay Strong! God Bless!!!
