The importance of Book 2 is in understanding both the hardness of medical education, and caste systems in Scotland & the British Raj, and that many societies have ways of "looking down" at another part of humanity. To me it seems revelatory that Oprah and others who grew up in the American South would deeply understand this caste system, and recognize the way many of the substories show healthy overcoming of racism and caste-system rigidity between people who respect and care for each other, in spite of "the system" in this book. It is deeply humane of Dr. Verghese, to show that respect, honor and compassion.

Hi Oprah Just wanted to say that over the years, I have listened to many podcasts, which is available now at the touch of the screen. You, my dear, still has that curiosity about the topic you are engaged with as well as the person who is being interviewed. I feel like I know you are in awe of Dr Abraham, but I can say for sure that he feels the same. Oprah you were born to be the gift you are to us and I love you. I smile every time you say this is your favorite part of the book. While fiction might be the great lie the way we see the world, it has been for me an entry to my dreams fulfilled in many areas of my life. Thanks to the many Teachers who saw in us what we couldn't. I am so proud of you.

I came across this podcast and am moved deeply by the profound learning in the pages. So beautifully written. God definitely had you wait to share your book & I believe his intention was to shine a much brighter light in the world than a candle. Thank-you Abraham ❤

Thank you so much for this book that is telling about compassion for people who have some challenges in their lives and we should not condemn them. Rather we should find a way to help them. They are also children of God who are going through lives challenges. Nobody knows of the karma that awaits us.

It would be lovely if you did a film with Abraham of Kerala. A trip down memory lane for him and his inspirations from the place itself.

The artist notices details and the physician notices details and the learning process for both requires the ability to imagine and problem solve. In this way they are both participating in the process of creating. This is how they are alike.

Besides superbly delving into female psyche, there are the fascinating medical situations, some others besides myself, may have encountered only in this book. Oprah said it so well- it Is like a spiritual tome.

I really miss the discussion around Chapter 34 here, especially the language Philipose uses when he's trying to use the English he knows to discuss the symptoms of the baby he brought to St Bridget's. "What's your name?" "Call me Philipose".. that's literally a reference from the opening line of Moby Dick, the novel that Philipose has been reading. His entire language in that chapter has been modelled after Moby Dick, and I'm sad this wasn't touched upon during this interview.

If you have not read the entire book, STOP at minute 33. There is a MAJOR spoiler here. I wanted to listen to this podcast as I read the book and it took away the power of the largest reveal that I'd yet to experience. I loved the book anyway, but I would have liked that to be revealed to me anew as I read.
