I told my collie off once for coming back covered in mud and she ran to the river and washed it all off. Coincidence, maybe, but they are that smart.

I have a working border collie so he gets very dirty. He knows that if he doesnt clean up he will have to wait in the utility. So every day he goes over to the turlough to wash off which is great!

Studies show dogs actually understand phrases more than single words. Ex) if you teach dog verses dig they wouldn’t really know well. I always use “go to the car” “where is your ball” “go find it” stuff like that. It’s incredible what they pick up

@@LincolnTheLabrador Aeon is a greeter and the world is his Walmart. 🥳 He’s 3 now and is starting to show more restraint and incredible observation skills. We go literally everywhere together and he has learned all about life as a trucker. He’s basically a furry child who only knows love and loyalty. The only limits to these dogs is the ones we make for them. My goodness I’m so impressed with the stupid dog I never really wanted. I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong about something.

There is a positive side to their sensitivity to loud noises. My husband found that our Border Collie was an integral part of his war-related PTSD recovery. He also had a sensitivity to loud noises. They comforted each other and now neither of them are overly bothered by loud noises. This can be beneficial to families with sensitive children too.

My wife and I have to be very careful about what we talk about because ours understands English so well. At first we started coming up with alternative words for exciting words like like walk, beach, stick, ball etc. We quickly realized that the alternative words did not last long before he learned those too. Eventually it didn't matter what word we used because he learned the words around them. We had to switch to using archaic forms of English and using words to describe objects that were close enough for us to understand the intention without letting him in on too much. I can teach him any simple trick within 15 mins or so, which has made training other types of dogs feel difficult. He knows how to shut doors on command which is really convenient. When I finish dinner there is no need to shout down the hall that it's ready, just tell him to tell my wife and he will harass her until she comes :) I also don't need to find my other dog if my collie boy is around because he is always happy to herd her back into the house on command.

We got a border collie puppy at the start of the summer and we’ve noticed (in comparison to one of his other border collie friends) that he’s really chill. If we are exhausted or busy he just follows us around and lays down until we’re done. Though I totally agree border collies are not for lazy people. When my pup has energy he has MAJOR zoomies. I love hiking with him and teaching him new things. Which definitely helps when he’s feeling particularly energetic.

I have a border collie named Flo and she is absolutely astonishing, she knows so many commands and we potty trained her within a week of having her. She’s really antisocial towards other dogs but loves her humans. When you buy a border collie you get an amazing guard dog for instance my dog sleeps at the bottom of my bed to protect me. She’ll listen to any command. One time as a puppy she ran off around the block but after we trained her not to do so. She will never leave the house without command and will stay inside if we leave the door open for at least an hour. I LOVE her, she’s helped me through so much at my age (16). I wanted to put this out there for anyone who may be contemplating whether to get a border collie or not, from personal experience they are sooooo worth it, I can’t get enough of her. Just be sure to exercise them enough so they are not as hyperactive during the night.

We have been very lucky with our BC, she can be left all day and won't be destructive at all. She goes out for a walk once a day and chases her ball and is so good with recall but is a nightmare for pulling on the lead and trying to herd cars. But is also happy to walk for miles and miles on a weekend. She's the friendliest, softest thing ever with people and totally ignores other dogs. She was socialised loads at a young age so this is probably why she's so friendly. She's super intelligent but will ignore you when there's a tennis ball involved. I would love another in the future but would be in for a big shock if the other dog is more border collie than her!

My Border, named Murphy, was a rescue at about 6 months. She was my canine soul mate for sure. She was gentle, sweet, empathetic and so, so smart. All the cons probably were present, but she was so worth any of them. The loyal and protective personality was irresistible to me. She has passed on, but forever in my heart.

I find that walks do nothing for my border aussie - they are really just training for going on runs! My girl runs off-leash at least 20 miles per week with me, and we also do a frisbee session every day, and an morning and evening walk just to keep a routine. She knows when to relax and leave me alone while I'm working, but I think she can only"turn off" because she gets so much exercise.

Great video and accurate! I’ve had them since 8th grade and now in my 50’s except a short stint in the Army. Outstanding companions if you understand them and their needs. I’ve had them when I could give them their herding needs and trial them and my current and last great just family members. My current 1.4 year old that is so much like your pup. He was my Covid lockdown pup after losing a 14 yr old and so thankful to still be able to work from home. He goes to work with me every day at 8 am in the den, is so patient throughout the day and can’t imagine going back into the office where he’d be left for at least 8 hours per day. He is my work buddy and pulls many long hard days to pay our mortgage. :)

I’ve had my border collie for a year and half since she was 6 weeks, and this video is very accurate. Training is a MUST! I would recommend reading a Border Collie Specific book and see if actively following the training is something that would be enjoyed BEFORE getting a Border collie. The only point I slightly disagree on is potty training. It takes longer for some to fully get down 100% and I say that for anyone going thru this to not get too frustrated if it doesn’t take as quick as your friend’s dog. Their bodies need time to catch up, which is usually at 6-7 months and older before they can hold it for a long time, and have zero mistakes.

I just lost my first dog a border collie. 13.5yrs and the best friend ever. We got him from a farm at 7wks and watched his mom herd horses! He was with 6 others in a beautiful stable. He knew dozens of words by the time he was older. He knew our moods. He spoke with his eyes. We exercised him vigorously, mentally and physical while young. By the time he got about 7yrs, he chilled. Still needed good walks daily, still needed mental work, but he changed. He was always game for anything, but in his older age he just wanted to understand all our words. If you talked to him he would stare, tilt his head, just knows BG he knew every fifth word of a sentance. His stare was fierce. If you held a frisbee or a ball he would lay flat and stare. Haunting. Like he thought his stare could telekinesis like MGE that object. And he loved to cuddle. The best. If you can hustle and train those first years, border collies are magical dogs.

@@annamariepagano7684 I've never pet a husky but read their hair is course on top then soft underneath. That makes it even more tough to deal with. My BC is pretty soft. Personality obviously plays a factor. With my BC who is now 2 years old I was able to temper her energy. In the house she never runs around and is free to play with her many toys. In the rare occasion we cant go out and play fetch or she can't go for a walk until much later (in season or it's the summer so have to wait for cooler time) she's perfectly sound. If you take the time to instill confidence and calm behaviour you can help them grow into an amazing dog. She's an absolute dream of a dog, completely calm whilst I work from home and is excellent in training and play. If I believed all the naysayers of BCs I'd have not had this brilliant dog in my life.

I’ve got two Australian cattle dogs and we just got a border collie pup (grew up with family members having both) and oh my god border collies are a lot calmer than cattle dogs, I couldn’t believe it 🤣 he’s got everything in cattle dogs that I love but also doesn’t do what I dislike my cattle dogs doing. We do lots of mental enrichment to keep them calm and tuckered out. Pup will be doing puppy class and then going on to finish the top level of obedience class + we’re gonna do agility with him. I’m also a vet nurse just like your sister 😊

When training my border collie with barking when he was 1, I only repeated "no bark" and had mini treats in hand when he responded to my request. I didn't say "stop," "no," or call him name again and again. That's h Just confusing for the dog. I'd just give one command consistently for barking. Bring tiny treats to park and work on it for awhile.

My neighbour's border collie never gets brushed, bathed or trimmed because his owners couldn't get him to sit still for it. He's 9 years old, and an outdoor-only dog who wanders around on the farm. Since I made friends with him earlier this year, I've started brushing him occasionally when he'll let me. His coat is very fluffy and gets full of seeds and twigs and spiders and things, but it doesn't look too bad most of the time, he seems to get a lot of them out by himself eventually. When I brush him, I just get rid of the few seeds that are left, such as ones stuck near his ear that he can't reach, and a small amount of fluff. Sometimes I wonder if it would be helpful for me to brush him more often since I've heard border collies need it, and I seem to be the only one who can get him to co-operate, but he doesn't seem bothered himself really. What do you think?

Slightly a bit different but many years ago had a Border Collie cross named Yogi. Thing I remember is his understanding human emotions. If were upset he would try and comfort you. If you were fighting someone he would bark at you. If were cuddling human companion he get in between as he didn’t want to miss out. If were angry he would hide. He was such gentle dog. My sister at time had her baby son over and he be crawling on the carpet. Yogi would think he another dog and start sniffing and licking him. My mum said don’t let him do that. I replied he loves him. He won’t hurt him. He just thinks he found a new dog buddy. You couldn’t used the walk because he knew the meaning. He start jumping up and down. He run to the draw where lead was. Later on we got another dog. Foxy Terrier names socks because she had 4 white paws. As pup she tormented Yogi yet Yogi never once got angry. The only time there was ever an issue was when there was bone. That is when love goes out the window.

Had two border collies (one died at 8, and one at 15) and both where lovely, calm and well behaved. Perhaps we got lucky, but I also think that our own behavior around the dog matters a lot. If you’re calm… good chance the dog will be as well.

They are such great dogs! But yes, need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation to keep they're busy minds working throughout the day. Cedar has never been a "barky" dog but she does growl every now and again when she hears an odd sound. I guess it depends on how you bring them up :)

I've been taking care of my friend's border collie - intermittently for the last few months - and they are truly the smartest dogs I have ever encountered. You can see the intelligence in their eyes - when they look at you...or when they're focused on something - you can see the gears turning in their heads! I taught my friend's dog to drink water on command...He would run and run and run, and I would decide that he needs to stop and take a drink. So, I would show him the water and tell him to take a drink. He would look at me, and then look at the water bowl and then look back at me...so, I would bend down and point at the water bowl and say, "Take a drink." Then he would take a drink! He drinks now whenever I tell him to - even without pointing at the water bowl!

For the most part...if they are part of the house. Our first border collie was the best with the children who stayed in our house that we didn’t even have to be with him....however, kids under age of 6 that were strangers, made him anxious and he would growl at them. Our 2nd border collie was the same...seems anxious around kids under age of 6 or so, but with him, I think it’s because they are so bouncy and dog etiquette illiterate. Does fine with older kids. Did fine around my niece and nephew when we used to babysit them...but they were 8&11 at the time. First dog, the girls we always had were 0-7. Those were his girl. My niece and nephew were under 5 when they started to stay with us with our first dog. I found with both dogs, when nervous with strange kids, let them be around but not close. Then let just one child at a time come closer and wait til the dogs wants to go to them....too many people don’t teach their kids not to run by dogs, run up and “hug” them around the neck. I’m grateful that my dogs have never bit anyone. But I am very attune with my dogs and very proactive. Just be aware of these types of issues.
@shelleyhoerauf3595
@shelleyhoerauf3595 3 жыл бұрын
@@brookethomo I don’t have kids either. I’m on my 2nd border collie. Our first BC died weeks shy of 10 due to spleen cancer. Got our 2nd BC a couple weeks later. He’s 8 now and still acts with the energy of a 2yr yr old. I have found with both dogs, that children under about age 6, seem to have made both my dogs nervous and have made them growl. I have also found that young children in our home regular that stay here routinely (nieces and nephews) are absorbed into what they have thought was our family and were fine. Too many children however do not not dog etiquette and will run up and try to hug cause the “puppy is so cute”. Well, how would I feel if a stranger runs up to me and tries to hug me around my neck from behind, a person that’s bigger than me? I’d be scared....so I think little kids being so bounced and all over the place make the dog nervous. Have found he does better when he can go to the child alone to check child out and not feel overwhelmed. Good to be proactive if this is an issue in my book...prevent incidents that may be one an issue. Neither of my dogs ha e ever bit anyone....but then, I would hate for that to ever happen. Most kids don’t realize that when a dog growls, there’s a reason. I hope you have good luck with your dogs. Border collies are amazingly smart and are the best of companions. I write this as my dog sleeps on couch next to me. He doesn’t like me out of his sight. Loves to lay in his yard and watch the birds in the tree...or be teased by the squirrels....he also loves to take many of his “babies”(toys and his stuffed toys) out side and place them in piles. Sometimes he has several different piles. He will come back in, sniff through his toys, choose which one he wants...and back outside, puts it in a pile. Heaven forbid if I take any of his babies in....he will come back in, get each baby he had and put them back into his exact piles.....guess his way of herding his babies. Gotta love them.

Hi. Loved the video. One mistake, though. I am diagnosed with OCD and it's kind of offensive that this mental illness is being used in a very wrong way. But I'm sure you meant no harm. Suggestion is... It should be "Perfectionist Tendencies" since that's what a Border Collie has. Not OCD where chemical imbalance in the brain is actually present. Please. It's a real mental illness that causes depression and anxiety. But apart from that, I enjoyed watching this. I hope you and Cedar are staying safe and healthy. ❤
