The Saturn is truly awesome. I only got one last year, I had been collecting all the others system and the Saturn was the last one I brought as I believed at first that the system wasn't that good. Man I was wrong. It become my favourite. Panzer dragoon saga really stands out to me. Course I had to use pseudo saturn to play it. I also got myself a victor saturn as well and a couple of other models since then. To anyone looking to get into the Saturn I suggest spending the money and getting a really nice unit (the best units are the later mk1 revision) and just use a pseudo saturn cartridge to play the games. Also the Saturn has a really robust laser. New jvc laser can be brought for it (replaced a few myself also they are cheap) and the motor can always be replaced. In fact a brought a few saturn off eBay all with laser problems and they all work now with a little care.

I'm lucky enough to still have the Saturn I bought new so many years ago at Toys R Us when the console launched. It was the first system I bought with my own money. I do need to resolder the start button wires on my Sega Stunner though to be able to play the Virtua Cop games properly again. Oddly enough the reason I've kept it is not for the games, as great as they are, but because it has the best CD player interface I've ever used.

Excellent content as usual, I decided right away when I started heavily collecting back in 2015 that I was never gonna go all in on collecting Saturn but was determined to at least experience the library. As of today I own a Model 1 American system, but only Guardian Heroes and Knights, I'd like most of the rest of the future collection to be reproductions.

As talking of repro games, here in brazil people organized themselves to make these games because of how so pissed they were about the insane Sega Saturn Prices, being a Panzer Dragoon more than 500 dolars, the repro they are making costs little more than 10 dollars, with exact replicas of CD cases, manuals, and even promotional posters for a bonus to the first buyers. The saturn is still one of my Fave systems. It and the TG-16 are my underdog darlings. I still play mine to this day. I have almost every game you mentioned in this video and you are 100% correct. The saturn was a powerhouse that developers did not how to use properly. Sadly I have not seen a single Saturn game in used game stores in about 3 years in my entire state. I have even asked store employees to call or email me if a Saturn game comes in. There is definitely a cost of ownership associated with the Saturn. I have already replaced the optical pickups on my 2 Saturns but now I need to start recapping the systems. I have to say that I am happy I started collecting the Saturn in the early 2000's. the last game I bought for my Sega Saturn was the Working Designs Sega Ages. That was the last Saturn game I needed to complete my Working Designs collection, and yes it cost me a pretty penny. Great video as always SLX. Keep up the good work!

One thing i’d want to tell to someone new that wants to collect for the saturn. Is to think about how you really want go about this because it can be done a variety of ways depending on your wallet. If you want to go an average route. •Get yourself a working Saturn. •Make sure its been tested, working and try it out yourself for a while because anything can happen after its been shipped. •Get yourself a Psuedo Saturn Kai Cartridge (Usually a Red Cartridge that that has a switch at the top. There are multiple versions so see which fits your needs) •Get a Genesis Component with the Saturn Adapter (HDRetrovision/CastlemaniaGames)and then get a Retrotink2X Or Get a Good Quality RGB Scart Cable (RetroAccess) get a decent-good quality Upscaler. “Watch My Life in gaming’s vid on the saturn to know which Scart cable is for you.” •Controllers you can either find on ebay or from Retrobit. Lastly the games •Personally i’d say go straight to Etsy and order the games from there. They’re repros but it’s better of you just want to straight away buy the games and pay a decent price for them. A large amount of games unfortunately are starting to get discrot and others are pretty expensive. Buying the repros is like the middle ground. There are other way you can do this. •Buy the real games •get a composite or s-video cable •if you aim to play on CRT •get an action replay 4M+

As far as multiplatform games go, the media and gaming journalists considered the Saturn versions the weakest is because they were showing their bias towards the PS1 in the vast majority of cases. I've played MSH vs. SF on PS1 and I HATED the FREAKING LOAD TIMES on that version. I did hear the Saturn version DOES NOT have load times at all...and I might have to track it down. Duke Nukem 64 on Nintendo 64 is obviously a censored port of DN3D. It's sad that I missed out on the Sega Saturn and I agree that collecting for it is a pain. With every console I own, I'm JUST a casual collector. Admittedly for me if I want to get the experience of really expensive titles for the platform, I have to resort to getting a repro. And you're right about looking for Saturn games at a local Mom & Pop retro store in my area. I finally got into the Sega Saturn in 2017 and I've heavily wanted to get into that console for a long time. Most times, I get Saturn games, mainly Japanese titles from a seller on FB and he usually sell them at reasonable prices. Bulk Slash and that Cotton game looks cool.

I bought my Sega Saturn due to many people praising it as underated, best on 2D Gaming I personally got interested by his story, its amazing how Sega handled this system. So i give it a try. Man, it really is the best console out there, i have a Playstation collection but the Saturn really gets me playing all day, Daytona USA is amazing, Quake is impressive (i finished it yesteday), Need for Speed plays WAY Better on Saturn than PS1, Saturn Bomberman gets on our nerves when playing multiplayer. The best thing? Pseudo Saturn Kai. which saves a lot of money Everyone must get their hands on a Sega Saturn, its an amazing experience but be careful; some systems have their Laser dried up, therefore backups cannot be loaded. So burn a game, have PseudoSaturn Kai and test your future Saturn with that! if it doesnt read or takes a ton of time to load the game; do not buy it. Best Advice, i tested, literally, 9 Sega Saturns; 1 was a success but couldnt afford it, then an American one had its Internal Memory destroyed. Finally, got myself an American one from another seller. Great channel Sega Lord, you won a subscriber, i really like your views on the Saturn and it really makes me love this system even more!

I love my Saturn. I honestly can't remember when I picked it up... It must have been between 2000 and 2003. A high school friend had the foresight to collect a lot of top notch games for it based on what he read in Gamefan magazine who were big supporters of the Saturn if I remember correctly. So I put to use my new CD burner on my 10gig Pentium III PC to work and made copies of all his originals including Dragon Force, Fighets Megamix, Cotton Boomerang, Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes and Panzer Dragoon Saga. I also bought the few good ones I could find in the wild back then as well and scored CIBs of Shinobi X, Night Warriors and Nights. Picked up Japanese Imports as well over the years such as Macross, Vampire Saviour, Twin Bee Collection and some KOF titles. Still works likes a charm. I think it's value will forever rise as its just to uncommon of a system these days, I have people coming over all the time in their mid to late 20s always shocked when they see it no knowing what it is, hahaha

The Saturn has become one my favourite consoles. Unfortunately I did own a Saturn until January 2018. Back in the old days I knew that the Saturn existed but I was not impressed by it because the German magazines were not reporting in a favorable way of the Sega console, so I went with the N64 and later with the PS1. I really wish had not listened to the gaming mags because the Saturn is a awesome machine. Now I like it as much as the first Plasystation. The only drawback for using the Saturn in 2019 is that some of the games are really expensive to get. I have a Japanese Saturn, so it is a bit easier because some japanese games are much cheaper than their NTSC or Pal Counterparts. the only problem is that some Story driven games are not playable without solid japanse skills. Eventually I will get some Repro games as well to enjoy some of the more Story driven games like Policenauts, Deep Fear and some other titles.

I did not have a Saturn back in the day, I've decided to collect for it in 2019. I wanted to love the Saturn, but I'm hating it now. My decision to start a collection was made looking at prices for the most common games (Daytona, Virtua Fighter, etc etc etc), but as soon as I went further in my collection, I'm almost regreting it. Many of the greater games are 120+ USD (Guardian Heroes, Albert Odyssey, Three Dirty Dwarves, etc). Simply. Absolutely. Ridiculous. To a point it can barely make any sense to start a collection now unless you've won the lottery. A great system ruined by sellers greed.

I just started collecting for the saturn about a month ago when I won an auction for Shining Force 3. It was a bit pricey but I knew that going into it. I loved the SF series on the genesis and this would be cool to have. But I grew attached to the system. I had to have more. Right now I own 9 games for the system totalling at around 650 dollars spent. That's an average of 72 dollars per game. At some point you have to ask an existential question "What is a game? A piece of art? A plaything?". And at that point I started to go insane so I'm taking a break from it. I still have a few more games on the list but I know the exact feeling. As long as there are people willing to buy at a high price, it will stay at a high price.

I think the cost of games are really only for those who are nostalgic and had one when they were younger. For me, an ODE (the Rhea) was the answer and I love it.

I remember begging friends to see panzer dragoon, virtua fighter 2, bug, clockwork knight and so much more like dragon force and virtual hydlide. These games where just so much better than any boring PlayStation launch game. But people are lame and PlayStation goes on
@ciredecgellar82325 жыл бұрын
nope i'm agree with you the Saturn launch games line up was far away better than the PS1 one. I decided to buy my Saturn after testing both consoles in a video game store. Of course, at first, like everybody, i was impressed by games like Wipeout or Ridge Racer and Toshinden, but after playing at Panzer Dragoon, Daytona or VF i knew as a gamer that the Saturn games were more deep and playables.

It's things like price, availabbility and disc rot that make me glad i managed to score a pheobe/rhea for my saturn, gdemu for my Dreamcast and just yesterday a Mega SD for the megadrive. I still buy games, and sometimes repo's, when i can get them for a good price because I love the physical look of some of them.

I was very active back in 99-04 way back when DeliSoba was considered expensive at $250-300. And I was fortunate enough to visit Japan every year since 89. So I bought any that grabbed my eyes at 500yen a pop. I’m sure that Hyper Duel I bought was bit pricey at 3500 yen. :)

When I was a kid I picked up a second hand Saturn for dirt cheap in summer 1998! One of the benefits by late 98 was the Saturn was dead in the UK and games retailers were practically giving Saturn software away! I managed to get Quake, Burning Rangers and Deep Fear all new for about £40!

I consider myself very lucky that I happen to live in Taiwan. The Saturns and games available here are all Japanese, but the Saturn was not super popular here, perhaps because the locals can't read Japanese. Whatever the reason, there are lots of games for very low prices. Nothing incredibly rare, but the good common games are easy to find for cheap. I was able to easily pick up games like Knights into Dreams, Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2, Saturn Bomberman, Vampire Savior, Street Fighter Collection, Samurai Shodown 3, King of Fighters 95 and 96, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Fighters Mega Mix, Dead or Alive, Daytona USA, Sega Rally Championship, and Hang On GP 95, all for less than $10 each, some for just $2 or $3 each. I also found a new, unopened Saturn steering wheel controller at a retro store for just around $20. Living in Taiwan, I've been able to build my Saturn collection to around 15 or so solid games for not much money.

Great Vid as always, what I do is buy the ones i really want, cd-r's for the rest then buy them when I see a good deal....no game is worth some of the prices they go for but we only have ourselves to blame if no one paid then they would not cost that much :(

The worst part about disc rot when it comes to the Saturn is that Sega/third parties were often very cheap when it came to printing the disc. Instead of putting an entire layer of paint on the top for the label, they often put dotted printing on the top to avoid having to buy more than a shade or two of color (because it costs more to print with multiple colors) and the disc itself was often unprotected because of it. Also the 'cool factor' of seeing the silver on the top was a culprit for this too, leaving those parts much less protected from the elements or human error.

I don't know about anyone else.. but I enjoy researching and looking up peoples collections for systems.. To myself the japanese saturn game scene is not frustrating, but fun.. To check oddities, such as Pandemonium being rebuilt as Magic Hopper in Japan.. and finding out that a Saturn shooter on the PsP .. Costs more on the PsP ( Salamander), because there's less accessible physical shmups on the psp.. see fun :D

Glad I finished collecting for the Saturn in early 2004 when it was still kinda cheap-ish. I own a Japanese full set. Collecting for it now seems like a pain, with these absolutely ridiculous prices. Same thing stopped me from getting a full Japanese PS1 set.

When I bought my first set of japanese games, was Burning Rangers, Dragon Ball Z Legends, King of Fighters 97, and XMen vs Street Fighters, Holy shit!!! I thought, up to this day Saturn keeps being my Favorite console of all time, I loved Burning Rangers regardless of the language barrier, I managed to beat that game, awesome soundtrack, and Dragon Ball Z legends was so incredible I loved it.... They also never made another King Of Fighters as impressive as the 97, was hoping for 98 and 99 on Saturn, sadly they never arrived. Sega Saturn was amazing.. I wished they had made Captain America and the Avengers would been awesome for the Saturn, also a second Burning Rangers, Streets of Rage, a new Command & Conquer, KOF98,99 & Doom2.

thank you for making this video. really. I wrote a comment on the last video, that i was looking forward owning a Saturn. But i also need to look at the harsh reality. Some games are really expensive in contrast to their ps1 versions and some exclusive games are ridiculously expensive. Now, i think i will still buy a Saturn, but the library wont be that big as i imagined. Still, as i said, thank you for making this Guide. Also, sorry if my english is not that great.

Purchased a modded Saturn with the Phoebe chip installed, the Saturn is my first Sega console and so far I’m loving it!! Playing through shining force holy Ark at the moment and it’s incredible. Was 980 for a cleaned Saturn console that included all of the ram carts, controllers and Saturn Library pre-installed on a micro sd. That in addition to purchasing the racing controller separately and controllers in better condition (ocd about controllers being perfect) and the s-video cord from hd-retro vision seems to be the ultimate way to experience the console. If anyone is interested the EBay seller was “Catv246”. And you can find cheaper Saturn controllers on sites like Samuriabuyer, since the Saturn was way more popular in Japan. Purchased a brand new racing wheel for around 70 after shipping and fees. Now all I need is the virtual stick ss controller and I’ll be set!!

Yes collecting now days can be very expensive and difficult for sure. Luckily I bought all my us games and most of my rare imports back in 07 when prices were better and moms were doing yard sales for their college kids at the time and that is where i got most of my collection, between that and eBay. I got my Panzer Dragoon Saga around this time for $110, now prices have multiplied by 6. As you mentioned those deals are no longer to be had....ebay is really the only option for most. I don't blame anyone who buys Saturn reproductions as it is a good alternative as it very closely resembles the real thing and even has the manual and disc art. I admit in order to complete those few missing in my collection I ordered a handful of these reproductions and the quality is outstanding and due to the very short supply its not a bad option even though purists will turn there nose up at this but not everyone makes 80,000 a year and can spend that type of money so I get it. Great informative video as always sega lord.
